Book Synopsis Studies in Stemmatology II by : Pieter van Reenen
Download or read book Studies in Stemmatology II written by Pieter van Reenen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004-09-23 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stemmatology is the discipline that attempts to reconstruct the transmission of a text on the basis of relations between the various surviving manuscripts. The object of this volume is the evaluation of the most recent methods and techniques in the field of stemmatology, as well as the development of new ones. The book is largely interdisciplinary in character: it contains contributions from scholars from classical, historical, biblical, medieval and modern language studies, as well as from mathematical and computer scientists and biologists. The contributions in the book have been divided into two sections. The first section deals with various stemmatological methods and techniques. The second section focuses more specifically on the various problems concerning textual variation. An earlier volume on Studies in Stemmatology was published in 1996 and opened the most actual state of the art in stemmatology to a broad audience. That first volume was very well received by stemmatologists and also gave an impulse to new research, as several articles in the current volume clearly illustrate. Both volumes are of interest to scholars in (historical) linguistics, literary studies, Bible studies, classical studies, medieval studies, and history.
Download or read book The Comic Text written by Brian J. Levy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a close analysis of the Old French fabliaux, that medieval corpus of short comic tales in narrative verse celebrated (sometimes notorious) for their irreverence and sexual content. It picks out certain key images - such as gambling, illness, and damnation - which develop into themes and motifs running through all the texts, and which add layers of ironic patterning to the essential subject-matter and narrative of each fabliau. These elements, in many respects the 'small print' of the joke, furnish the comic text with many rhythms and echoes, all contributing to the ludic, adversarial nature of the text. They are extremely flexible, serving as a rhetoric of depiction that extends from broad comic motif to the lightest triggering of a mocking smile. This volume will be of interest to all students of medieval culture, Old French literature, and the development of the short or comic narrative.
Book Synopsis Chrétien de Troyes by : Douglas Kelly
Download or read book Chrétien de Troyes written by Douglas Kelly and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supplement to the 1976 original bibliography reflects the expanding scope of modern Chrétien studies, including items from around the world, with the assistance of an international team of scholars. The Supplement builds on and completes the Chrétien de Troyes Bibliography first published in 1976. Together the two volumes constitute the fullest and most complete bibliographical source now available on this major medieval author. Chrétien de Troyes bequeathed a corpus of highly original and widely influential Arthurian romances. Indeed, his direct or indirect influence continued throughout the middle ages and beyond into modern times. The Bibliographypermits students of medieval romance to quickly identify the areas in which Chrétien scholarship has been active. Items are listed under twenty-two topics, with numerous sub-sections under each topic, and cross-references for items that treat more than one of the topics. The broad geographic and linguistic scope of modern Chrétien studies is evident in items not only from western Europe and North America, but also from the growing body of medieval scholarship in eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and Australasia. To ensure accuracy and completeness, the editor has been assisted by scholars competent in the many languages in which Chrétien studies are now published, most notably in Japanese, Welsh, Rumanian, Hungarian and Polish, as well as by other scholars and librarians who generously provided assistance and information in finding items difficult to access.

Book Synopsis Studies in Stemmatology by : Pieter Th. van Reenen
Download or read book Studies in Stemmatology written by Pieter Th. van Reenen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains ten papers selected from among those presented at the annual Free University Stemmatological Colloquia 1990-93. Current issues in (automated) stemmatology, paleography and codicology are addressed from contemporary theoretical perspectives. All papers focus on new directions in textuology and manuscript affiliation, and especially on the use of computer science in this field. The theoretical implications of computer-assisted stemma construction are explored. In combination with achievements in codicology and paleography, these investigations allow for dealing with the major problems in textuology: extreme complex and entangled manuscript traditions. Following an introductory chapter, part 1 presents six theoretical contributions on stemmatology, and part 2 deals with auxiliary fields in textuology, such as codicology and paleography. In part 3 applications of the previously developed fields are presented.
Book Synopsis Space Between Words by : Paul Saenger
Download or read book Space Between Words written by Paul Saenger and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent reading is now universally accepted as normal; indeed reading aloud to oneself may be interpreted as showing a lack of ability or understanding. Yet reading aloud was usual, indeed unavoidable, throughout antiquity and most of the middle ages. Saenger investigates the origins of the gradual separation of words within a continuous written text and the consequent development of silent reading. He then explores the spread of these practices throughout western Europe, and the eventual domination of silent reading in the late medieval period. A detailed work with substantial notes and appendices for reference.

Book Synopsis La Belle Dame qui eust mercy and Le Dialogue d’amoureux et de sa dame by : Joan Grenier-Winther
Download or read book La Belle Dame qui eust mercy and Le Dialogue d’amoureux et de sa dame written by Joan Grenier-Winther and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Belle Dame qui eust mercy and Le Dialogue d’amoureux et de sa dame are two late-medieval poems in which a courtly gentleman and lady debate the merits of his pleas for her affections. In both cases, the lady is recalcitrant, dismissing her suitor’s lovesickness as a trifle, denying that she ever gave any sign of encouragement, and wishing to protect her reputation. The lady in Le Dialogue never capitulates; in contrast, the Belle Dame ends by agreeing to her lover’s suit and imagining a future in which they will joyfully live together. Both poems merit serious attention for their kinship with Alain Chartier’s La Belle Dame sans mercy (1424) and other poems in the so-called “Belle Dame” cycle. Their presence in numerous fifteenth- and sixteenth-century manuscript and printed collections attests to their appeal in their day. Equally as significant is their unusual bipartite stanzaïc structure, suggesting amalgamation of separate poems and/or continuations of existing poems. Such an anomaly complicates attribution of authorship and dating, but close study of La Belle Dame qui eust mercy and Le Dialogue d’amoureux et de sa dame can only enhance our understanding of the process(es) of poetic composition, as well as the mise en page and reception of literary works, in the late Middle Ages.

This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the years the extent of the contributions by A. Dees to the renewal of philology, has become progressively more evident. In his Etudes sur l'evolution des demonstratifs en ancien et en moyen français (1971) Dees has developed a framework within which language evolution in the past can be reconstructed in detail. A comparison of the data of the two Atlases compiled by Dees with the manuals of Old French shows the extraordinary richness of these Atlases with respect to both the visual representation and the documentation not used previously. The first section of this volume is devoted to language variation and distribution. The renewal of the stemmatology started by Dees goes back to the early 1970s. Dees proves that there is a mathematical solution to the problem of reconstructing a genealogical tree for a text. The application of this theory to manuscripts in various languages forms the second theme of this volume.
