Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melancholies of Midnights is a poetry book of thoughts, feelings, and emotions that were never said. Of feelings and emotions that were never adequately expressed. The book is divided into 4 chapters namely Bare Beginnings, Mayday Masks, Forgotten Farewells, and Hard Healings. Each, a stage of the journey so far. The poems in each chapter walk us through the feelings and emotions of each stage. It is essential to note that even though the stages are expressed in chronological order, it isn’t always so. In a journey, it is possible and quite alright to go back to certain stages or even skip some. A journey of anything is far from linear and consistent. M.O.M hopes to provide comfort and a sense of belonging to readers in knowing that they aren’t alone in their struggles, whether they’re at the beginning as they fumble in the darkness or have accepted their fate and resolve to hide their pain as they struggle to endure it or have lost all hope and prepare to say farewell or have found the strength to continue yet find healing a not-so-easy or linear process but still continue on a recovery that will be worth it. It serves to remind, You are not alone.

Book excerpt: In the darkest hours, where the night's veil descends and the mind's labyrinthine thoughts take hold, this poetry collection emerges as a beacon of solace. With each verse, we embark on a journey through the complex terrain of early adulthood, where confusion and chaos reign. Through the delicate art of language, the poet navigates the tumultuous waves of distress, using words as lifeboats to reach the shores of understanding. These verses are the profound culmination of emotions and thoughts, woven together in the quiet stillness of midnight. With every line, the poet reveals that each life phase is a unique odyssey, a new iteration of Hiraeth—a longing for the intangible. This collection encourages us not to discard our emotions but to cradle them tenderly, recognizing that vulnerability is the essence of our human experience.

Josephine is at last free of the blood moon. But in a desperate rush to find help for a comatose Luke, she discovers the strange and dangerous world of the resistance, and it is unlike any world Josi has known. In the west they believe in fury – they cultivate and encourage it. The unruly people of the resistance know that to survive means to fight. But can they fight the inevitable cure for sadness that rushes steadily closer? In the action-packed sequel to Fury, everything Josi believes about herself will be challenged. Haunted by atrocities and betrayals, she must find the strength to trust again, and decide how far she is willing to go to fight the inevitable. At times both brutal and sweet, Melancholy is the story of second chances and finding love in a ruined world.

Download or read book The Midnight Disease written by Alice W. Flaherty and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An original, fascinating, and beautifully written reckoning . . . of that great human passion: to write.”—Kay Redfield Jamison, national bestselling author of An Unquiet Mind Why is it that some writers struggle for months to come up with the perfect sentence or phrase while others, hunched over a keyboard deep into the night, seem unable to stop writing? In The Midnight Disease, neurologist Alice W. Flaherty explores the mysteries of literary creativity: the drive to write, what sparks it, and what extinguishes it. She draws on intriguing examples from medical case studies and from the lives of writers, from Franz Kafka to Anne Lamott, from Sylvia Plath to Stephen King. Flaherty, who herself has grappled with episodes of compulsive writing and block, also offers a compelling personal account of her own experiences with these conditions. “[Flaherty] is the real thing . . . and her writing magically transforms her own tragedies into something strange and whimsical almost, almost funny.”—The Washington Post “This is interesting, heated stuff.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Brilliant . . . [a] precious jewel of a book . . . that sparkles with some fresh insight or intriguing fact on practically every page.”—Seattle Post-Intelligencer “Flaherty mixes memoir, meditation, compendium and scholarly reportage in an odd but absorbing look at the neurological basis of writing and its pathologies . . . Writers will delight in the way information and lore are interspersed.”—Publishers Weekly

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed study of John Keats's classic volume of poetry published in 1820 considered in the light of the history of melancholyFirst, book-length critical study of John Keats's collection of poems, Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St Agnes, And Other Poems (1820)Considers the anthology as a poetically and thematically unified collection, instead of the more usual method of analyzing the poems in chronological order of writingProposes that the main theme running through the volume is melancholy, a very capacious medical category extending back to ancient Greco-Roman writers, through the Renaissance, and the subject of literary cults in the Romantic ageThe first detailed study of Keats's markings and annotations on his copy of Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621) which was his favourite book during 1819 when he was writing the poemsThis book examines John Keats's immensely important collection of poems, Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St Agnes, And Other Poems (1820), and is published in the volume's bicentenary. It analyses the collection as an authorially organised and multi-dimensionally unified volume rather than as a collection of occasional poems. R. S. White argues that a guiding theme behind the 1820 volume is the persistent emphasis on different types of melancholy, an ancient, all-consuming medical condition and literary preoccupation in Renaissance and Romantic poetry. Melancholy was a lifelong interest of Keats's, touching on his medical training, his temperament and his delighted reading in 1819 of Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy.
