Book Synopsis Heating, Cooling, Lighting by : Norbert Lechner
Download or read book Heating, Cooling, Lighting written by Norbert Lechner and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1991-01-16 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a qualitative rather than a quantitative approach, presents detailed information based on concepts, rules, guidelines, intuition, and experience for architects in the areas of heating, cooling, and lighting at the schematic design stage. The data explored supports a three-tiered approach--load avoidance, using natural energy sources, and mechanical equipment. Among the topics covered are shading, thermal envelope, passive heating and cooling, electric lighting, and HVAC. Case studies illustrate how certain buildings use techniques at all three tiers for heating, cooling, and lighting. An appendix lists some of the more appropriate computer programs available to the architect for analysis at the schematic design stage.
Book Synopsis Sustainability in Higher Education by : Peggy F. Barlett
Download or read book Sustainability in Higher Education written by Peggy F. Barlett and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-08-16 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Campus leaders describe how community colleges, publicly funded universities, and private liberal arts colleges across America are integrating sustainability into curriculum, policies, and programs. In colleges and universities across the United States, students, faculty, and staff are forging new paths to sustainability. From private liberal arts colleges to major research institutions to community colleges, sustainability concerns are being integrated into curricula, policies, and programs. New divisions, degree programs, and courses of study cross traditional disciplinary boundaries; Sustainability Councils become part of campus governance; and new sustainability issues link to historic social and educational missions. In this book, leaders from twenty-four colleges and universities offer their stories of institutional and personal transformation. These stories document both the power of leadership—whether by college presidents, faculty, staff, or student activists—and the potential for institutions to redefine themselves. Chapters recount, among other things, how inclusive campus governance helped mobilize students at the University of South Carolina; how a course at the Menominee Nation's tribal college linked sustainability and traditional knowledge; how the president of Furman University convinced a conservative campus community to make sustainability a strategic priority; how students at San Diego State University built sustainability into future governance while financing a LEED platinum-certified student center; and how sustainability transformed pedagogy in a lecture class at Penn State. As this book makes clear, there are many paths to sustainability in higher education. These stories offer a snapshot of what has been accomplished and a roadmap to what is possible. Colleges and Universities Covered Arizona State University • Central College, Iowa • College of the Menominee Nation, Wisconsin • Curriculum for the Bio-region Project, Pacific Northwest • Drury University, Missouri • Emory University, Georgia • Florida A&M University • Furman University, South Carolina • Green Mountain College, Vermont • Kap'olani Community College, Honolulu, Hawaii • Pennsylvania State University • San Diego State University • Santa Clara University, California • Slippery Rock State University, Pennsylvania • Spelman College, Georgia • Unity College, Maine • University of Hawaii–Manoa • University of Michigan • University of South Carolina • University of South Florida • University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh • Warren Wilson College, North Carolina • Yale University
Book Synopsis Abelian Properties of Anick Spaces by : Brayton Gray
Download or read book Abelian Properties of Anick Spaces written by Brayton Gray and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anick spaces are closely connected with both EHP sequences and the study of torsion exponents. In addition they refine the secondary suspension and enter unstable periodicity. This work describes their -space properties as well as universal properties. Techniques include a new kind on Whitehead product defined for maps out of co-H spaces, calculations in an additive category that lies between the unstable category and the stable category, and a controlled version of the extension theorem of Gray and Theriault (Geom. Topol. 14 (2010), no. 1, 243–275).

Book Synopsis (m)KdV Solitons on the Background of Quasi-Periodic Finite-Gap Solutions by : Fritz Gesztesy
Download or read book (m)KdV Solitons on the Background of Quasi-Periodic Finite-Gap Solutions written by Fritz Gesztesy and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the introductory section, we review the formulation of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and of the modified KdV (mKdV) equation as a compatibility condition for a Lax pair of linear operators. We then illustrate Miura's transformation, which maps solutions of the mKdV into solutions of the KdV. We then give a general overview of the concept of soliton solutions relative to general backgrounds, and of the single and double commutation methods. Finally, we present the main results of the article. To avoid the clutter of too many technical details, the paper is organized in four sections and five appendices.

Book Synopsis Direct and Inverse Scattering at Fixed Energy for Massless Charged Dirac Fields by Kerr-Newman-de Sitter Black Holes by : Thierry Daudé
Download or read book Direct and Inverse Scattering at Fixed Energy for Massless Charged Dirac Fields by Kerr-Newman-de Sitter Black Holes written by Thierry Daudé and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, the authors study the direct and inverse scattering theory at fixed energy for massless charged Dirac fields evolving in the exterior region of a Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black hole. In the first part, they establish the existence and asymptotic completeness of time-dependent wave operators associated to our Dirac fields. This leads to the definition of the time-dependent scattering operator that encodes the far-field behavior (with respect to a stationary observer) in the asymptotic regions of the black hole: the event and cosmological horizons. The authors also use the miraculous property (quoting Chandrasekhar)—that the Dirac equation can be separated into radial and angular ordinary differential equations—to make the link between the time-dependent scattering operator and its stationary counterpart. This leads to a nice expression of the scattering matrix at fixed energy in terms of stationary solutions of the system of separated equations. In a second part, the authors use this expression of the scattering matrix to study the uniqueness property in the associated inverse scattering problem at fixed energy. Using essentially the particular form of the angular equation (that can be solved explicitly by Frobenius method) and the Complex Angular Momentum technique on the radial equation, the authors are finally able to determine uniquely the metric of the black hole from the knowledge of the scattering matrix at a fixed energy.

Book Synopsis Equivalence of Measure Preserving Transformations by : Donald Ornstein
Download or read book Equivalence of Measure Preserving Transformations written by Donald Ornstein and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1982 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes give an exposition of a theory of Kakutani-equivalence that runs parallel to the theory of isomorphism between Bernoulli processes with the same entropy. A reinterpretation of the results yields a theory of isomorphisms between reparametrized flows, and of the relations between flows and their cross section maps. A brief survey is given of the more recent results in the theory.
Book Synopsis Actions of Linearly Reductive Groups on Affine PI -Algebras by : Nikolaus Vonessen
Download or read book Actions of Linearly Reductive Groups on Affine PI -Algebras written by Nikolaus Vonessen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This very interesting monograph straddles two well-studied areas--invariant theory of commutative rings, and the theory of a fixed (noncommutative) ring under a finite group of automorphisms. The author develops a new theory--the fixed subring of a polynomial identity algebra under a linear algebraic group of automorphisms.
