This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to comprehensively address neurodiagnostic testing for the broad scope of clinical neurophysiologic disorders in the pediatric population. The field of clinical neurophysiology has expanded exponentially with the development of new approaches, techniques, studies, and certifications. This book bridges the gap in clinical information available for practitioners who use neurophysiologic techniques to evaluate and treat children and adolescents with epilepsy, sleep, neuromuscular, and autonomic disorders but may not have subspecialty training in each individual field. Drawing on the expertise and clinical wisdom of leading practitioners and researchers in each area of clinical neurophysiology, the book focuses on the technical and interpretive skills unique to treating the pediatric population. It covers the full spectrum of neurophysiologic topics including pediatric sleep disorders, epilepsy, febrile seizures and nonepileptic paraxosysmal disorders. Chapters address pediatric muscular dystrophies, EMG, brachial plexopathies, peripheral neuropathy, intraoperative monitoring, evoked potentials, evaluation of autonomic disorders, and EMG studies for all applications. This singular working reference will be indispensable for the clinical provider as well as for trainees and technologists who use a wide diversity of clinical neurophysiologic skills to more accurately diagnose and treat neurologic disorders in children and adolescents. Key Features: Delivers comprehensive information on all areas of pediatric clinical neurophysiology Provides clinical and procedural guidance for performing and interpreting neurodiagnostic tests in children and adolescents Over 100 illustrations of studies and findings amplify the text Brings together experts from the fields of epilepsy, sleep, neuromuscular and autonomic disorders, and neurophysiological monitoring About the Editor: Gloria M. Galloway, MD, FAAN is Professor of Clinical Neurology, Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, OH

Book Synopsis Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 4) by : Vikram Patel
Download or read book Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (Volume 4) written by Vikram Patel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the early 18th century, Piedmontese intellectuals and scientists were keen on dialoguing with colleagues and academic institutions across the Alps. They had a truly cosmopolitan approach to research and its dissemination. Physicians were particularly active, and ideas started to circulate. Turin and Piedmont found themselves within a network connecting the most important European capitals, but also their scientific societies and the universities. This stimulating environment was further enriched by the growth of the civil society: new academies were funded and scientific works were published. These became the pillars of a renewed 'cosmopolitan spirit'. During the second half of the century, exchanges among academic institution and societies, but also friendships and personal contacts (sometimes even occasional) favoured the 'process of Europeanisation' (and of 'deprovincialization') of Piedmontese culture and its medicine. This process was defined and described by Vincenzo Ferrone, an historian of the Enlightenment. As a result, Turin joined the league of other European capitals, such as Paris, Berlin and Saint Petersburg (Ferrone, 1988). This became especially evident under Victor Amadeus II, were rationalisation programmes against myths and false beliefs flourished"--

Book Synopsis Epilepsy Across the Spectrum by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Epilepsy Across the Spectrum written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-29 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although epilepsy is one of the nation's most common neurological disorders, public understanding of it is limited. Many people do not know the causes of epilepsy or what they should do if they see someone having a seizure. Epilepsy is a complex spectrum of disorders that affects an estimated 2.2 million Americans in a variety of ways, and is characterized by unpredictable seizures that differ in type, cause, and severity. Yet living with epilepsy is about much more than just seizures; the disorder is often defined in practical terms, such as challenges in school, uncertainties about social situations and employment, limitations on driving, and questions about independent living. The Institute of Medicine was asked to examine the public health dimensions of the epilepsies, focusing on public health surveillance and data collection; population and public health research; health policy, health care, and human services; and education for people with the disorder and their families, health care providers, and the public. In Epilepsy Across the Spectrum, the IOM makes recommendations ranging from the expansion of collaborative epilepsy surveillance efforts, to the coordination of public awareness efforts, to the engagement of people with epilepsy and their families in education, dissemination, and advocacy for improved care and services. Taking action across multiple dimensions will improve the lives of people with epilepsy and their families. The realistic, feasible, and action-oriented recommendations in this report can help enable short- and long-term improvements for people with epilepsy. For all epilepsy organizations and advocates, local, state, and federal agencies, researchers, health care professionals, people with epilepsy, as well as the public, Epilepsy Across the Spectrum is an essential resource.

Therefore these articles represent an authorative review of the current state of knowledge regarding preclinical course and symptomatology, subtypes with their impact on the pathology, genetic alterations, novel mechanisms of neuronal cell death, diagnostic tools and old and novel therapeutic approaches with respect to neuroprotection and neuroregeneration in Parkinson's disease. Particular emphasis has been placed on a novel antiparkinsonian drug called budipine with various modes of action also influencing altered non dopaminergic systems in Parkinson's disease. It is evident, that many questions on the cause, course and treatment of Parkinson's disease are still unanswered and therefore the ideal way to treat a parkinsonian patient remains to be defined.

Book Synopsis Neurological Disorders by : World Health Organization
Download or read book Neurological Disorders written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are several gaps in understanding the many issues related to neurological disorders, we know enough to be able to shape effective policy responses to some of the most common. This book describes and discusses the increasing public health impact of common neurological disorders such as dementia, epilepsy, headache disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuroinfections, neurological disorders associated with malnutrition, pain associated with neurological disorders, Parkinson's disease, stroke and traumatic brain injuries. It provides information and advice on public health interventions that may reduce their occurrence and consequences, and offers health professionals and planners the opportunity to assess the burden caused by these disorders. The clear message that emerges is that unless immediate action is taken globally, the neurological burden is likely to become an increasingly serious and unmanageable.
