Book excerpt: High school romance is tough—even for a bona fide love goddess. Can Cupid succeed as a mortal matchmaker? When Eros (aka Cupid) is expelled from Olympus for defying Zeus after falling in love with Orion, she is banished to what she believes to be hell. We call it New Jersey. If she ever wants to go back to the comforts of her old life, she will have to find love for three couples—without using her powers. Eros, now calling herself True, immediately identifies her first project in Charlie and believes finding him love will be a piece of cake. Charlie is new at school and eager to break out of his old image of band geek, so it’s lucky for him when he falls in with the right crowd on his first day. But music is still his passion. That is, until he meets Katrina... Katrina is floundering after the death of her father and takes refuge with a boy who, while not entirely supportive, will be there when she needs him, unlike her mother. Too bad True thinks any girl Charlie talks to is perfect for him. Can she get out of her own way and help Charlie and Katrina connect, or will she be stuck in New Jersey forever?

Download or read book Dante’s Dream written by Gwenyth E. Hood and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archetypal images, Carl Jung believed, when elaborated in tales and ceremonies, shape culture’s imagination and behavior. Unfortunately, such cultural images can become stale and lose their power over the mind. But an artist or mystic can refresh and revive a culture’s imagination by exploring his personal dream-images and connecting them to the past. Dante Alighieri presents his Divine Comedy as a dream-vision, carefully establishing the date at which it came to him (Good Friday, 1300), and maintaining the perspective of that time and place, throughout the work, upon unfolding history. Modern readers will therefore welcome a Jungian psychoanalytical approach, which can trace both instinctual and spiritual impulses in the human psyche. Some of Dante’s innovations (admission of virtuous pagans to Limbo) and individualized scenes (meeting personal friends in the afterlife) more likely spring from unconscious inspiration than conscious didactic intent. For modern readers, a focus on Dante’s personal dream-journey may offer the best way into his poem.
Download or read book Girl Head written by Genevieve Yue and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Girl Head shows how gender has had a surprising and persistent role in film production processes, well before the image ever appears onscreen. For decades, feminist film criticism has focused on issues of representation: images of women in film. But what are the feminist implications of the material object underlying that image, the filmstrip itself? What does feminist analysis have to offer in understanding the film image before it enters the realm of representation? Girl Head explores how gender and sexual difference have been deeply embedded within film materiality. In rich archival and technical detail, Yue examines three sites of technical film production: the film laboratory, editing practices, and the film archive. Within each site, she locates a common motif, the vanishing female body, which is transformed into material to be used in the making of a film. The book develops a theory of gender and film materiality through readings of narrative film, early cinema, experimental film, and moving image art. This original work of feminist media history shows how gender has had a persistent role in film production processes, well before the image ever appears onscreen.

Book Synopsis Greek Tragedy and the Emotions (Routledge Revivals) by : W. B. Stanford
Download or read book Greek Tragedy and the Emotions (Routledge Revivals) written by W. B. Stanford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Aristotle the main purpose of tragedy is the manipulation of emotions, and yet there are relatively few accessible studies of the precise dynamics of emotion in the Athenian theatre. In Greek Tragedy and the Emotions, first published in 1993, W.B. Stanford reviews the evidence for ‘emotionalism’ – as the great Attic playwrights presented it, as the actors and choruses expressed it, and as their audiences reacted to it. Sociological aspects of the issue are considered, and the whole range of emotions, not just ‘pity and fear’, is discussed. The aural, visual and stylistic methods of inciting emotion are analysed, and Aeschylus’ Oresteia is examined exclusively in terms of the emotions that it exploits. Finally, Stanford’s conclusions are contrasted with the accepted theories of tragic ‘catharsis’. Greek terms are transliterated and all quotations are in translation, so Greek Tragedy and the Emotions will appeal particularly to those unfamiliar with Classical Greek.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irresistible Love Series includes the following full length novels: IRRESISTIBLE NIGHTS: It was supposed to be nothing more than a hot, steamy one night stand. No names. No strings. Until I found out that he’s my father’s new business partner. He was a gorgeous, sexy real estate magnate over twenty years older than me. I was a young businesswoman looking for an uncomplicated, good time. He gave me that, and so much more. We shared one sinfully hot night together and I tip-toed out of his life, leaving just a thank you note behind. I thought I’d never see him again, until he showed up the following afternoon. With my father, who introduced him as his new business partner. IRRESISTIBLE AFFAIR: Sleeping with my best friend’s dad never should have happened, but it did and I don’t regret a thing. Not when he’d given me the hottest, most decadent night of my life. I’ve been in love with him for years, but for as confident and demanding as he is in the bedroom, once the sheets have cooled he’s riddled with misgivings. He’s already done the marriage and family thing, and he insists I deserve that, too . . . with another man who isn’t old enough to be my daddy. I don’t agree, and I’m just going to have to convince him otherwise—that I’m everything he wants and needs despite the obstacles standing in our way. IRRESISTIBLE SEDUCTION: When I’d run into Nick Pallas at an old friend’s wedding, I’d been grateful to have someone to talk to and dance with—especially a hot Greek of a guy I’d harbored a secret crush on for years. After a recent break-up, it was nice to feel wanted and desired. I wasn’t looking for anything serious, and he definitely gave me a night to remember. Except Nick wanted more than just that one night, and I wasn’t prepared for his brand of seduction—the way he made me feel, physically and emotionally. Resisting him was impossible, yet trusting another man with my heart wasn’t so easy . . .
Book Synopsis Calvino and the Pygmalion Paradigm by : Bridget Tompkins
Download or read book Calvino and the Pygmalion Paradigm written by Bridget Tompkins and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calvino and the Pygmalion Paradigm: Fashioning the Feminine in I nostri antenati and Gli amori difficili is the first book-length analysis of the representation of the feminine in Calvino’s fiction. Using the structural umbrella of the Pygmalion paradigm and using feminist interpretative techniques, this book offers interesting alternative readings of two of Calvino’s important early narrative collections. The Pygmalion paradigm concerns the creation by a male ‘artist’ of a feminine ideal and highlights the artificiality and narcissistic desire associated with the creation process. This book discusses Calvino’s active and deliberate work of self-creation, accomplished through extensive self-commentaries and exposes both the lack of importance Calvino placed on the feminine in his narratives and the relative absence of critical attention focused on this area. Relying on the analogy between Pygmalion’s pieces of ivory and Barthes’ ‘seme’ and drawing upon the ideas underlying Kristevan intertextuality, the book demonstrates that, despite Calvino’s professed lack of interest in character development, his female characters are carefully and purposefully constructed. A close reading of Calvino’s narratives, engaging directly with Freud, Lacan and the feminist psychoanalytical thinking of Kofmann, Kristeva, Kaplan and others, demonstrates how Calvino uses his female characters as foils for the existential reflections of his typically maladjusted and narcissistic male characters.
