Download or read book Medium Law written by Daithí Mac Síthigh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should anyone care about the medium of communication today, especially when talking about media law? In today’s digital society, many emphasise convergence and seek new regulatory approaches. In Medium Law, however, the ‘medium theory’ insights of Harold Innis, Marshall McLuhan and the Toronto School of Communication are drawn upon as part of an argument that differences between media, and technological definitions, continue to play a crucial role in the regulation of the media. Indeed, Mac Síthigh argues that the idea of converged, cross-platform, medium-neutral media regulation is unattainable in practice and potentially undesirable in substance. This is demonstrated through the exploration of the regulation of a variety of platforms such as films, games, video-on-demand and premium rate telephone services. Regulatory areas discussed include content regulation, copyright, tax relief for producers and developers, new online services, conflicts between regulatory systems, and freedom of expression. This timely and topical volume will appeal to postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers interested in fields such as Law, Policy, Regulation, Media Studies, Communications History, and Cultural Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary object of this book is to assist in bringing Psychology within the domain of the exact sciences. It has long been felt by the ablest thinkers of our time that all psychic manifestations of the human intellect, normal or abnormal, whether designated by the name of mesmerism, hypnotism, somnambulism, trance, spiritism, demonology, miracle, mental therapeutics, genius, or insanity, are in some way related ; and consequently, that they are to be referred to some general principle or law, which, once understood, will simplify and correlate the whole subject-matter, and possibly remove it from the domain of the supernatural.

His idea was that any contact with "spirits" was contact with the medium's or the subject's own subconscious. Anything else could be explained by telepathy, which he defined as contact between two or more subconsciouses.
Book Synopsis The Laws of Simplicity by : John Maeda
Download or read book The Laws of Simplicity written by John Maeda and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-07-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten laws of simplicity for business, technology, and design that teach us how to need less but get more. Finally, we are learning that simplicity equals sanity. We're rebelling against technology that's too complicated, DVD players with too many menus, and software accompanied by 75-megabyte "read me" manuals. The iPod's clean gadgetry has made simplicity hip. But sometimes we find ourselves caught up in the simplicity paradox: we want something that's simple and easy to use, but also does all the complex things we might ever want it to do. In The Laws of Simplicity, John Maeda offers ten laws for balancing simplicity and complexity in business, technology, and design—guidelines for needing less and actually getting more. Maeda—a professor in MIT's Media Lab and a world-renowned graphic designer—explores the question of how we can redefine the notion of "improved" so that it doesn't always mean something more, something added on. Maeda's first law of simplicity is "Reduce." It's not necessarily beneficial to add technology features just because we can. And the features that we do have must be organized (Law 2) in a sensible hierarchy so users aren't distracted by features and functions they don't need. But simplicity is not less just for the sake of less. Skip ahead to Law 9: "Failure: Accept the fact that some things can never be made simple." Maeda's concise guide to simplicity in the digital age shows us how this idea can be a cornerstone of organizations and their products—how it can drive both business and technology. We can learn to simplify without sacrificing comfort and meaning, and we can achieve the balance described in Law 10. This law, which Maeda calls "The One," tells us: "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, and adding the meaningful."
Book Synopsis Screen-based Art by : Annette W. Balkema
Download or read book Screen-based Art written by Annette W. Balkema and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century, the screen - the Internet screen, the television screen, the video screen and all sorts of combinations thereof - will be booming in our visual and infotechno culture. Screen-based art, already a prominent and topical part of visual culture in the 1990s, will expand even more. In this volume, digital art - the new media - as well as its connectedness to cinema will be the subject of investigation. The starting point is a two-day symposium organized by the Netherlands Media Art Institute Montevideo/TBA, in collaboration with the L&B (Lier en Boog)series and the Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis (ASCA).Issues which emerged during the course of investigation deal with questions such as: How could screen-based art be distinguished from other art forms? Could screen-based art theoretically be understood in one definite model or should one search for various possibilities and/or models? Could screen-based art be canonized? What are the physical and theoretical forms of representation for screen-based art? What are the idiosyncratic concepts geared towards screen-based art? This volume includes various arguments, positions, and statements by artists, curators, philosophers, and theorists. The participants are Marie-Luise Angerer, Annette W. Balkema, René Beekman, Raymond Bellour, Peter Bogers, Joost Bolten, Noël Carroll, Sean Cubitt, Cãlin Dan, Chris Dercon, Honoré d'O, Anne-Marie Duquet, Ken Feingold, Ursula Frohne, hARTware curators, Heiner Holtappels, Aernout Mik, Patricia Pisters, Nicolaus Schafhausen, Jeffrey Shaw, Peter Sloterdijk, Ed S. Book Synopsis Message and Medium by : Caroline Tagg
Download or read book Message and Medium written by Caroline Tagg and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of digital communication technologies often focus on the apparently unique set of multimodal resources afforded to users and the development of innovative linguistic strategies for performing mediatised identities and maintaining online social networks. This edited volume interrogates the novelty of such practices by establishing a transhistorical approach to the study of digital communication. The transhistorical approach explores language practices as lived experiences grounded in historical contexts, and aims to identify those elements of human behaviour that transcend historical boundaries, looking beyond specific developments in communication technologies to understand the enduring motivations and social concerns that drive human communication. The volume reveals long-term patterns in the indexical functions of seemingly innovative written and multimodal resources and the ideologies that underpin them, and shows that methods are not necessarily contingent on their datasets: historical analytic frameworks can be applied to digital data and newer approaches used to understand historical data. These insights present exciting opportunities for English language researchers, both historical and modern.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Law and Justice on the Small Screen' is a wide-ranging collection of essays about law in and on television. Book Synopsis The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses by : Craig Baird
Download or read book The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses written by Craig Baird and published by Atlantic Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six Sigma is a set of practices used to systematically improve processes by eliminating defects, which is any nonconformity of a product or service to its specification. To be Six Sigma compliant, a company must produce no more than 3.4 defects per one million products. If this can be achieved, a company has the potential to save billions of dollars, just as Motorola did. The global communications company reported over $17 billion in savings in a recent yearly report, and over the past decade, companies like Bank of America, Caterpillar, Honeywell International, Raytheon, Merrill Lynch, and General Electric have implemented the practice. However, it is much more difficult to implement Six Sigma in small and medium-sized businesses, but it is becoming increasingly important to do so, as larger companies now require their supply bases to be Six Sigma compliant. In The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses, you will learn about the two main methodologies involved with Six Sigma, DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify), as well as various other methodologies advocated by companies around the world, including DCCDI, CDOC, DCDOV, DMADOV, DMEDI, and IDOV. You will also learn about black, green, and yellow belts; the key roles for successful implementation; cost savings; training; responsibilities; and terms specific to Six Sigma. In addition, you will learn how to avoid the common pitfalls and traps found during implementation, how to understand the statistical tools and problem solving techniques, and how to become certified. Also included are detailed examples, diagrams, and practical exercises to help you master the concepts of Six Sigma. Ultimately, you will discover how to improve the quality of your processes and products while increasing customer satisfaction and saving billions of dollars. The Six Sigma Manual for Small and Medium Businesses is for the company that has already implemented the process, an organization who may be considering it, students who want to learn it to make themselves more marketable, and business professionals who need a refresher course. Whatever your reason for reading this book you will find practical advice and tips for successfully learning about and implementing Six Sigma. Book Synopsis Small and Medium Enterprises, Law and Business by : Jan Winczorek
Download or read book Small and Medium Enterprises, Law and Business written by Jan Winczorek and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-23 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law plays an ambiguous role in running business. While legal tools can be used to tame uncertainties, for example, by concluding contracts to safeguard enforcement of future claims, they can also generate uncertainty. These secondary uncertainties like ones stemming from vague rights and obligations may be counterbalanced by using different resources and strategies, including acting informally, modifying business plans or accepting the losses from unpaid dues. This book discusses how small and medium enterprises use the law, abstain from using the law, and use alternative pathways to manage business uncertainties. Examining these topics through the lenses of an extensive qualitative and quantitative empirical study on justiciable issues, access to justice and legal uncertainty among SMEs in Poland, it implements and expands upon the paradigmatic paths to justice methodology which has been successfully used to study conflict resolution, access to justice and utilisation of the law by individuals in more than 30 jurisdictions. It argues that the grand promise of modern law - that it is a certainty-providing, neutral and democratic device to resolve problems and conflicts - is not fully delivered. It reveals how the conditions of a freshly developed capitalism combined with the rule of law backsliding contribute to universal, structural problems with access to justice meaning that accessing justice is a resource-hungry process, which incentivises small businesses to settle for their legal problems and engage in informal and alternative strategies.
