A few years ago the way Opened for me to go; and knowing that I should probably never get another chance to visit the historic scenes of the Old World, I determined to see all that I could which would be of value to me in my studies. 'we spent nearly six months on the trip, visiting Scotland, England, Bel gium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Sicily, Greece. Constantinople, Smyrna, Palestine and Egypt. The modern scenes in these places we paid little attention to. But spent our time on the points of historic interest. The student of historv who tries to see in his foreign travel as much as pos sible with limited means, finds that six months of such effort is hard work, both physically and men tally, and he is extremely glad when it 'is over and his face is turned toward his native shore. The ex cessive use of the singular number of the pronoun of the first person, must not be taken as egotism on the part of the writer. But rather as a desire to avoid that false modesty which confuses the mind by the indiscriminate and untruthful use of the edi torial we. The illustrations in the book are nearly all taken from post-cards which were pur. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Thoughts and Meditations on Some Passages in Holy Scripture By the mouth of thy servant, Lord, Thou hast said this; and everything around us and within us, sooner or later, attests the truth of this saying attests the fact that Thou art a God of judgment, making men to reap as they have planted, and to eat the fruit of what they themselves have sown. None but the wilfully blind can refuse to trace the footsteps of a divine Avenger who walks the world. There needs no judgment day to make this plain: for every day after its own fashion, and sometimes after a very notable fashion, has been in some sort such a judgment day. Our God has not said in vain, 'Thy sin shall find thee out.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight. — Psalm 19:14 Do you long to deepen your intimacy with the Lord? To find a sense of soul-steadying peace? To develop emotional strength? Then you will need to pause long enough to be still and know He is God. Trusted Pastor Robert Morgan leads us through a journey into biblical meditation, which, he says, is thinking Scripture—not just reading Scripture or studying Scripture or even thinking about Scripture—but thinking Scripture, contemplating, visualizing, and personifying the precious truths God has given us. The practice is as easy and portable as your brain, as available as your imagination, as near as your Bible, and the benefits are immediate. As you ponder, picture, and personalize God’s Word, you begin looking at life through His lens, viewing the world from His perspective. And as your thoughts become happier and holier and brighter, so do you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Meditations for Layfolk To confront ourselves every morning with some deep truth of revela tion is to realize our dignity as Christians. The high doctrine that St. Paul taught to his converts, men indeed just rescued from a rather degraded paganism, insisted always on the lofty position to which each had been called. He dealt with the sinner by making him realize that he was intended to be a saint. All of us need this inspiriting view of our vocation. Our lives are cast in mean streets, and we therefore count them without honour or value. Conscious simply of their pettiness, we make no attempt to see their true grandeur. We see but dimly if we see only the vision of the glory of the world. Taking, then, day by day a glimpse at one or other of the mysteries of God, we shall surely be led to understand ever more and more the worth of those souls of ours for which Christ did not disdain to die. There will of course be no need to worry ourselves if through some cause or other we are not able each day to fit in our meditation. So long as we can make it a general rule, we can well afford to allow some exceptions. But perhaps the word meditation itself sounds too alarming? We think not, for by this time the old fear of it as an intellectual gymnastic exercise of exceptional skill should have vanished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind , pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and gives valuable guidance about how to rightly pattern our thinking throughout the day. With the rich experiential theology of the Puritans, this book lays out a course for enjoying true meditation on God’s Word. Table of Contents: 1. The Importance of Recovering the Joyful Habit of Biblical Meditation 2. Unbiblical Forms of Meditation 3. Defining Biblical Meditation 4. Occasional Meditation 5. Deliberate Meditation 6.
