Sogar im Leben von Kleinkindern spielen Medien bereits eine wichtige Rolle und sind ein fester Bestandteil des organisierten Familienalltags. Das Fernsehen steht bei den Nutzungsdauern an erster Stelle und ist ein wichtiger Sozialisationsfaktor (Röbe 2008, S. 3). Um negative Medienwirkungen im Kleinkindalter so gering wie möglich zu halten, ist die Erziehung zum „richtigen“ Umgang mit Medien eine zentrale Aufgabe für eine zeitgemäße Erziehung. Im Mittelpunkt des ersten Teils dieser Arbeit stehen daher die theoretischen Grundlagen der Medienerziehung. Es soll aufgezeigt werden, welche unterschiedlichen Ziele Medienerziehung verfolgen kann, was den „richtigen“ Umgang mit Medien ausmacht sowie welche Fähigkeiten ein medienkompetentes Kind auszeichnen. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit umfasst eine Analyse der neuen Medienwelt des Baby TV. Auf diese noch relativ neue, aber vielfach umstrittene Thematik stoßen Eltern, die auf der Suche nach möglicherweise geeigneten Sendungen für Kleinkinder sind. Im Zusammenhang einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Medienerziehung, welches der erste Teil der Arbeit vorstellt, stellen sich Eltern nämlich unweigerlich auch die Frage, ob sie ihr Kleinkind bereits Fernsehen lassen wollen. Dann stoßen sie auf Baby TV, dessen Programme speziell für Kleinkinder zwischen dem 0. und 3. Lebensjahr konzipiert wurden. Seit Dezember 2005 ist der Sender Baby TV für 1,1 Millionen Haushalte im Kabelnetz Baden-Württembergs frei empfangbar. Baby TV will tagsüber Kinder zu Aktivitäten motivieren und nachts soll es mit ruhiger Musik und Farbflächen den Schlaf der Kinder fördern. Speziell wird suggeriert, dass Baby TV die Entwicklung der Kleinkinder fördert. Durch diese Arbeit sollen die Themen „Medienerziehung“ und „Fernsehen in früher Kindheit“ miteinander verbunden werden, sodass ersichtlich wird, welche auf das Fernsehen bezogene Form der Medienerziehung nicht sinnvoll erscheint.

The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe.
