Book Synopsis The Orators and Their Treatment of the Recent Past by : Aggelos Kapellos
Download or read book The Orators and Their Treatment of the Recent Past written by Aggelos Kapellos and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-12-05 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the representation of the recent past in classical Athenian oratory and investigates the ability of the orators to interpret it according to their interests; the inability of the Athenians to make an objective assessment of it; and the unwillingness of the citizens to hear the truth, make self-criticism and take responsibility for bad results. Twenty-eight scholars have written chapters to this end, dealing with a wide range of themes, in terms both of contents and of chronology, from the fifth to the fourth century B.C. Each contributor has written a chapter that analyzes one or more historical events mentioned or alluded in the corpus of the Attic orators and covers the three species of Attic oratory. Chapters that treat other issues collectively are also included. The common feature of each contribution is an outline of the recent events that took place and influenced the citizens and/or the city of Athens and its juxtaposition with their rhetorical treatment by the orators either by comparing the rhetorical texts with the historical sources and/or by examining the rhetorical means through which the speakers model the recent past. This book aims at advanced students and professional scholars. This volume focuses on the representation of the recent past in classical Athenian oratory and investigates: the ability of the orators to interpret it according to their interests; the inability of the Athenians to make an objective assessment of persons and events of the recent past and their unwillingness to hear the truth, make self-criticism and take responsibility for bad results.

Book Synopsis Postwar Soldiers by : Jörg Echternkamp
Download or read book Postwar Soldiers written by Jörg Echternkamp and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary historians have transformed our understanding of the German military in World War II, debunking the “clean Wehrmacht” myth that held most soldiers innocent of wartime atrocities. Considerably less attention has been paid to those soldiers at the end of hostilities. In Postwar Soldiers, Jörg Echternkamp analyzes three themes in the early history of West Germany: interpretations of the war during its conclusion and the occupation period; military veteran communities’ self-perceptions; and the public rehabilitation of the image of the German soldier. As Echternkamp shows, public controversies around these topics helped to drive the social processes that legitimized the democratic postwar order.
Book Synopsis Der Karikaturenstreit und die Pressefreiheit. Wert- und Normenkonflikte in der globalen Medienkultur by : Bernhard Debatin
Download or read book Der Karikaturenstreit und die Pressefreiheit. Wert- und Normenkonflikte in der globalen Medienkultur written by Bernhard Debatin and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. To some, the infamous "Mohammed Cartoons" that were published in September 2005 by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten tested the limits of the freedom of the press. Others regarded them as a malicious and tasteless provocation. And for yet others, they were a welcome excuse for violent protests. The cartoon debate raises a number of questions: What is paramount here, defense of the freedom of the press or mere Islamophobia? Is Western tolerance pitted against Oriental narrow-mindedness, or is this rather an issue of mutual respect and restraint? Was the whole conflict artificially created and inflamed by the media? Do we need to develop a new media ethics of intercultural recognition in the global media culture? And how can we ensure that this respect is mutual and not just laissezfaire tolerance of intolerance?
Book Synopsis Contested Transparencies, Social Movements and the Public Sphere by : Stefan Berger
Download or read book Contested Transparencies, Social Movements and the Public Sphere written by Stefan Berger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the multi-faceted phenomenon of transparency, especially in its relation to social movements, from a range of multi-disciplinary viewpoints. Over the past few decades, transparency has become an omnipresent catch phrase in public and scientific debates. The volume tracks developments of ideas and practices of transparency from the eighteenth century to the current day, as well as their semantic, cultural and social preconditions. It connects analyses of the ideological implications of transparency concepts and transparency claims with their impact on the public sphere in general and on social movements in particular. In doing so, the book contributes to a better understanding of social conflicts and power relations in modern societies. The chapters are organized into four parts, covering the concept and ideology of transparency, historical and recent developments of the public sphere and media, the role of the state as an agent of surveillance, and conflicts over transparency and participation connected to social movements.
Book Synopsis Empire of Pictures by : Sönke Kunkel
Download or read book Empire of Pictures written by Sönke Kunkel and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Cold War historiography, the 1960s are often described as a decade of mounting diplomatic tensions and international social unrest. At the same time, they were a period of global media revolution: communication satellites compressed time and space, television spread around the world, and images circulated through print media in expanding ways. Examining how U.S. policymakers exploited these changes, this book offers groundbreaking international research into the visual media battles that shaped America's Cold War from West Germany and India to Tanzania and Argentina.

Book Synopsis Media Innovations AR and VR by : Elle Langer
Download or read book Media Innovations AR and VR written by Elle Langer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-23 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augmented and virtual reality are media innovations with specific characteristics. They create immersion in the user, as the user is immersed in the medium and its 360° environment. To successfully develop content and applications for AR and VR, psychological effects, the specifics of the 360° environment, the story, and the way the media is used must be aligned with the needs and experiences of the user. Content producers face novel challenges in content development, method selection, teamwork, and the overall production process of AR and VR experiences. The book introduces readers to the characteristics of immersive media and provides scientific evidence and practical tips to help them produce high-quality, user-centric content for immersive media. The scientifically derived success factors in the form of checklists are a guide and an ideal basis for standardizing the production process and further developing one's own projects. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Medieninnovationen AR und VR by Elle Langer, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Book Synopsis Form and Meaning in Avant-Garde Collage and Montage by : Magda Dragu
Download or read book Form and Meaning in Avant-Garde Collage and Montage written by Magda Dragu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses intermedial theories to study collage and montage, tracing the transformation of visual collage into photomontage in the early avant-garde period. Magda Dragu distinguishes between the concepts of collage and montage, as defined across several media (fine arts, literature, music, film, photography), based on the type of artistic meaning they generate, rather than the mechanical procedures involved. The book applies theories of intermediality to collage and montage, which is crucial for understanding collage as a form of cultural production. Throughout, the author considers the political implications, as collages and montages were often used for propagandistic purposes. This book combines research methods used in several areas of inquiry: art history, literary criticism, analytical philosophy, musicology, and aesthetics.
