Download or read book Bacchic Medicine written by Harry W. Paul and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wine has always been a part of popular medicine. Bacchic Medicine analyses the historical role of wine in the treatment of disease and preservation of health. The Hippocratic texts gave wine therapy a canonical statement over two millennia ago; but the nineteenth century was the golden age of alcohol and wine therapy. The Germans and the British gave us early canons of wine therapy and, heavily endowed with wine cultural capital, the French followed. But like all therapies, alcohol and wine therapies were not without danger and some of the ‘iatrogenic’ tales are still with us. In the twentieth century, many doctors rallied to the defence of wine both as a substitute for more dangerous alcoholic drinks and as an efficacious medicament, with an impressive case for the efficacy of wine in fighting bacteria, heart disease and cancer. New science based on animal models and ionic theory fortified their arguments. According to the controversial ‘French Paradox’, wine drinking makes it possible for a population to enjoy a high fat diet yet suffer little. Bacchic Medicine also discusses the contemporary debate over the role of alcohol and wine in preventive medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early modern centuries a body of popularized medical writings appeared, telling ordinary people how they could best take care of their own health. Often written be doctors, such books gave simple advice for home treatments, while commonly warning of the dangers of magic, quackery, old wive's tales and faith-healing. The Popularization of Medicine explores the rise of this form of people's medicine, from the early days of printing to the Victorian age, focusing on the different experiences of Britain, the Continent and North America.
Book Synopsis Discipline of Nursing by : Michel Nadot
Download or read book Discipline of Nursing written by Michel Nadot and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-02-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing students access to higher education does not mark the beginning of basic scientific research into this discipline, and it is now a struggle for this fact to remain visible. Prejudices, misrepresentations and myths mislead nurses about the origins of nursing knowledge. Discipline of Nursing allows us to compare significant nursing figures: Florence Nightingale (Great Britain) and her equally valuable counterpart Valérie de Gasparin-Boissier (Switzerland). The two distinct training models proposed by these illustrious women have retained their relevance into the 21st Century since as early as 1859. The discipline of nursing seems to be arranged in almost geological layers of knowledge that we can distinguish by studying the traditions of nursing language. This book aims to provide a better understanding of the nature of services provided by nurses worldwide.

Download or read book An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform: A-L written by Christopher Hoolihan and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with "popular medicine" in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction [from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby], venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education. These books, covering areas largely ignored by the medical profession, made important contributions to the health of the American public, and the collection is a vital piece of medical history. The collector is Edward C. Atwater, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School. Christopher Hoolihan is History of Medicine Librarian at the University of Rochester Medical School's Edward G. Miner LIbrary.

Book Synopsis Suffering Scholars by : Anne C. Vila
Download or read book Suffering Scholars written by Anne C. Vila and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As early as Aristotle's Problem XXX, intellectual superiority has been linked to melancholy. The association between sickness and genius continued to be a topic for discussion in the work of early modern writers, most recognizably in Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy. But it was not until the eighteenth century that the phenomenon known as the "suffering scholar" reached its apotheosis, a phenomenon illustrated by the popularity of works such as Samuel-Auguste Tissot's De la santé des gens de lettres, first published in 1768. Though hardly limited to French-speaking Europe, the link between mental endeavor and physical disorder was embraced with particular vigor there, as was the tendency to imbue intellectuals with an aura of otherness and detachment from the world. Intellectuals and artists were portrayed as peculiarly susceptible to altered states of health as well as psyche—the combination of mental intensity and somatic frailty proved both the privileges and the perils of knowledge-seeking and creative endeavor. In Suffering Scholars, Anne C. Vila focuses on the medical and literary dimensions of the cult of celebrity that developed around great intellectuals during the French Enlightenment. Beginning with Tissot's work, which launched a subgenre of health advice aimed specifically at scholars, she demonstrates how writers like Voltaire, Diderot, Rousseau, and Mme de Staël, responded to the "suffering scholar" syndrome and helped to shape it. She traces the ways in which this syndrome influenced the cultural perceptions of iconic personae such as the philosophe, the solitary genius, and the learned lady. By showing how crucial the so-called suffering scholar was to debates about the mind-body relation as well as to sex and sensibility, Vila sheds light on the consequences book-learning was thought to have on both the individual body and the body politic, not only in the eighteenth century but also into the decades following the Revolution.

Download or read book Vaccination written by H. Bazin and published by John Libbey Eurotext. This book was released on 2011 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This English language edition is far more than a simple translation of the work "L'Histoire des vaccinations" published in 2008. The French edition has actually been totally revised and improved. In particular, it features a chapter dedicated entirely to yellow fever. A greater number of illustrations are included. This book will undoubtedly be of great interest to a section of the general public and to specialists. The history of vaccinations is a significant phase in the history of humanity. With the development of hygiene, vaccinations have certainly been the most notable progress of medicine. Nevertheless, this subject which has revolutionised human and animal medicine has long been explored poorly or not at all. This oversight has now been addressed through this fascinating work. All translated Pasteur texts are from the original manuscripts found in his laboratory notebooks. Finally, the moral problems inherent in the use of vaccines are addressed and at times, appear strangely similar to current situations. . .
