Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Notes on Climate, Diseases, Hospitals, and Medical Schools, in France, Italy, and Switzerland In the first place, with regard to the investigation of the subject to which almost the whole of Part First Is devoted - viz. The influence of Southern Climates on Consumption - the inquiry 15 of such Immense importance at present, when this disease is so alarm ingly prevalent, and when its victims crowd in such numbers to the countries treated of, that the only objection I could have to the publication of my remarks, was the prospect I had of greatly enlarging them, by additional experience, at no very distant period, As, however, many circumstances, might occur to prevent the accomplishment of this hope, it has been considered better to communicate iwithout further delay, information, which, though not exten sive, may yet be'useful, than to risk, for the sake of possible improvement or personal credit, the 'occur rence of a contingency, which, after all, might pos sib] y never be attained. Download or read book Spitting Blood written by Helen Bynum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few diseases have been more inextricably linked with our past than tuberculosis. The ancient Greeks called it phthisis or consumption, names still familiar in the early twentieth century. They knew that coughing up or spitting of blood were bad signs. Through the Medieval Period to the modern day, Helen Bynum explores the history and development of TB throughout the world, touching on the various discoveries that have emerged about the disease, and focusing on the clinical and experimental approaches of Rene Laennec (1781-1826) and Robert Koch (1842-1910). Therapies included miraculous touching, bleeding, travel, vaccines, sanatoria, open-air therapy, and surgery, although none proved successful. A real cure finally arrived after World War II, with anti-tuberculosis drugs, characterizing a new optimism about science, health, and society. Although concerns about TB faded away in the mid-twentieth century, the disease has now returned with a vengeance. Bynum describes the emerging picture from the World Health Organization of the difficulties in managing new drug-resistant forms of the disease that have established themselves in the developing world, and in poorer parts of large cities worldwide. The story of tuberculosis, it seems, is far from over."--

Book Synopsis Keats's Places by : Richard Marggraf Turley
Download or read book Keats's Places written by Richard Marggraf Turley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the essays in this volume reveal, Keats’s places could be comforting, familiar, grounding sites, but they were also shifting, uncanny, paradoxical spaces where the geographical comes into tension with the familial, the touristic with the medical, the metropolitan with the archipelagic. Collectively, the chapters in Keats’s Places range from the claustrophobic stands of Guy’s Hospital operating theatre to the boneshaking interior of the Southampton mail coach; from Highland crags to Hampstead Heath; from crowded city interiors to leafy suburban lanes. Offering new insights into the complex registrations of place and the poetic imagination, the contributors to this book explore how the significant places in John Keats’s life helped to shape an authorial identity.

Book Synopsis Regarding Romantic Rome by : Richard Wrigley
Download or read book Regarding Romantic Rome written by Richard Wrigley and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a collection of essays that explore the cultural history and representation of Rome from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The essays address diverse aspects of Rome as a subject and site of Romantic experience and commentary, investigating the legacy of the Grand Tour, and the changing face of Rome in the early nineteenth century. The contributions range across various media, genres, and topics - the Roman art market, paintings of contemporary Romans and their interpretation, music in and 'of' Rome, the evolution of nineteenth-century guidebooks, novels which take Rome as their narrative mise-en-scène, the idea of Rome as a setting for creative activity, ruins as polysemic metaphor, women and the reception of antiquity, the aesthetics of urban hygiene, and the mythology of that renowned quarter of Rome, Trastevere. In different ways, all of the contributions to this volume contribute to our understanding of the relationship between Rome's changing identity and the evolving forms of literary and artistic representation employed to record, evoke, commemorate, or make sense of the city, its people, and landscape.
