Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Missions Their Place and Power IN CE the third edition of this work was sent forth to the public, its author has been called from service here, to nobler service in the presence of the King. Now that a fourth edition is needed, some of the friends of Medical Missions have suggested that there should be in this new issue a likeness of the author, and also a short sketch of his life-work - so intimately were his life and work intertwined, that in his case life and work seemed one. In preparing the following sketch, lest the partiality of love should in any way detract from its worth, we shall compile rather than compose, and quote the opinions of others, rather than give our estimate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Appeal of Medical Missions The following pages represent a humble attempt to restate the case for Medical Missions, and supply to the Christian public the main considerations upon which the enterprise is based, and from which its appeal is made to the heart and conscience of the Home Churches. In no way is it claimed that what has here been written constitutes anything more than a general survey of the subject. The dominant idea in the mind of the author has been to bring home to the Christian consciousness of the Homeland an enhanced conception of the need, value, and importance of Medical Missions in the Spread of the Gospel. In consequence many aspects of the work have been dealt with in outline rather than in detail, and certain phases of Medical Missions possessing more technical than popular interest have been little more than mentioned. If it should be found that these pages serve any useful purpose as an introduction to a fuller grasp of the significance Of Medical Missions, then it is hoped that those interested will seek further informa tion from the writings of Medical Missionaries and other experts on the subject. In many cases throughout the book, references to medical missionaries are to be read as applying to both sexes equally. The author is greatly indebted to Dr Percy J. F. Lush, Chairman of the Medical Mission Auxiliary Committee of the to Dr E. H. Edwards. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Claim of Suffering: A Plea for Medical Missions The present volume, although issued by a missionary society, does not deal merely with the work of one particular society, but with the whole subject of the Christian Missions which are being carried on through out the world. We believe that its perusal will accen tuate the interest of those who are already familiar with the noble work which is being done by medical missionaries in response to the claim of suffering in non-christian lands, and in the case of others will create a desire to help forward this work by every means within their power. There is no other branch of Christian work of which it can more confidently be affirmed that it only needs to be known to be sup ported with enthusiasm. We are exceedingly grateful, and the readers of this volume will share our gratitude, to its author who, amidst the distractions of a particu larly busy life, has made time to write. The gratitude of our readers is also due to the Rev. E. H. Mosse, the Chairman of the s.p.g. Medical Missions Com mittee, and to Miss Mosse for help in collecting materials and in correcting the proofs of the book. Peter Parker, M.D., a medical missionary from America, who had laboured in China, and was returning on a Visit to the United States, passed through Edinburgh, and was the guest of the late Dr. Abercrombie. Dr. Abercrombie was so greatly interested in the intelligence he thus received, that he called together a few Christian friends to hear Dr. Parker's account of the work in China, and to consider the possibility of forming an auxiliary association in Edinburgh to promote Medical Missions. The writer of this paragraph was one of this small company, and well remembers the scene in, a parlour of the Waterloo Hotel. On that occasion he was accompanied by the Rev. William Swan, who had just then returned from Siberia, the mis sion in which he had served for many years having been suddenly broken up by the Russian Govern ment, through the hostile in uence of the Holy Synod of the Greek Church. When Dr. Parker heard the name of Mr. Swan, he eagerly inquired if he were the author of Letters on Missions, and was delighted to be introduced, explaining it was that book that had made him a missionary. It was soon agreed to form an association. Dr. John Coldstream, who was not present, having been proposed as Secretary, it was resolved to apply to him to take the responsible charge. He consented, and that was the first formation of the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society. It was some time, however, before the project obtained general recognition. Several distinguished members of the medical profession, one after an other, gave it their countenance and gradually the Society at its annual meeting took a more promi nent place. But for several years it did little more than expound the principle from the platform or by the press. Sir Culling Eardley Smith had early recommended a mission to Syria; but it was long found impossible to secure the services of any man sufficiently qualified for the work, and it was not till a much later period in the history of the Society that their mission at Nazareth was commenced. Medical Missions in India, China, and Ceylon It 15 time that apology for Medical Missions ceased and that unfair criticism passed away. Yet there are those to day, who, unacquainted with such work except in theory, are ready to avow the system as at least Open to question. They represent, the Medical Missionary as one who, by the bribe of healing, is slyly seeking to subvert his patient's faith in a religion good enough for him. A remark made to the writer by an educated Christian Indian lady, a quali hed medical practitioner, is worth quoting here. This book was released on 2008-10-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE This little volume has been written primarily to provide an outline of Radical iIussions, for the use of students and young people in Missionary Study Classes. There has also been kept in mind the far larger circle of Christian people whose interest in the work of Rlissionary Medicine has been limited by their scanty information on the subject. It is not such a book as would be read aloud, for instance, at a womens sewing meeting, but it is rather intended for study and individual perusal. Its aim is to present facts that ought to be pondered in the hearts of Christian men and women in the Church of Christ, and the subject makes a special claim upon the consideration of those who are members of the medical and nursing professions. There is no choice on medical missions, unless we ex- cept the Gospels. There is need of one. No one, for instance, has, as far as we are aware, worked out at all fully the psychological aspects of the subject. In the standard works on psychology, we have been able to discover but little dealing with the psychology of the religious emotions which were generated in the hearts of men and women through the touch of Christ. Artists and poets, with their intuitive perceptions, almost always tell of personal contact between the Saviour and those healed. Though not apparently bearing much on the actual claims that suffering makes on the medical profession, this would be the nearest approximation to a classic - be at least an interesting as well as a valuable scientific contribution to the subject. Somewhat more has appeared in the realm of Sociology and the wider influence upon public life that medical missions have had. Dr. James S. Denniss uilsurassed work on Christian missions and Social Progress gives an important section to the consideration of this topic. There is great need for some work which would Co-ordinate the fast accumulating material on Medical missions in periodical literature, and marshal its principles and practices into a harmonious whole. As a test-book, this is necessarily but a meager outline of the subject. The argument from Scripture we have taken for granted throughout. It is a topic which has received generous treatment at the hands of other writers, and therefore did not seem to demand the emphasis that has been laid on other less frequently noticed aspects. Our warmest thanks are due to Dr. James S. Dennis for his valuable assistance and suggestions as well as for permission to use the statistics given on page eighty-nine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Work of the Medical Missionary Eight Outline Studies These Studies were written by Dr. Edwards after his experience as Traveling Secretary of the Student Volunteer Movement among medical colleges, and were used by him at three Student Conferences during the summer of 1909. They are intended primarily for medical students and nurses, but should prove suitable also for students looking forward to medical work. The medical and hygienic conditions in non-Christian countries, the relation of supply to demand in the number and quality of medical practitioners, the real scope and value of the medical missionary's work, the nature of his equipment and practice, his special problems and opportunities, his every day life, the requirements of such a profession - these are found to be common questions in the minds of medical students. In the outline Studies which follow, these questions are not fully answered, but references are given in which adequate answers will be found. It is essential that reference literature be available. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kirin, North China: Pioneer Medical Mission Work A new era of service is now opening before us, for in the spring of 1895 we purpose building and equipping a permanent Medical Missionary Hospital and Dispensary in this great city. Dear Christian friends, we claim your co-operation in this grand enterprise. I can conceive no nobler calling, no more glorious service to our fellow men, no more Christ-like mission than that which you have ordained and separated us to do. To soothe the fevered brow, to allay the aching pain, to open the blind eyes, to restore the dying to health, is, indeed, Christian philanthropy of the highest form and when you add to this the privilege of preaching the Healer of Gennesaret, binding up the broken-hearted, bringing deliverance to Satan's captives, and life and light and joy and hope and heaven to dark and despairing souls, truly, as a great poet has said, ours is an errand all divine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneering in Morocco: A Record of Seven Years' Medical Mission Work, in the Palace and the Hut The nature of this book is explained in the title. These notes from my diary were never intended for publication, although most of the book has appeared, in one form or another, in the Presbyterian Messenger. Missionary enterprise in Morocco must always be twofold, as we have to combat with Mohammedanism and Judaism. In a country where there is no security to life or property our work is necessarily fraught with many difficulties. At present the country is but partially opened; yet, with a knowledge of medicine, however small, access can be gained to many homes and hearts, which would be otherwise impossible. Nevertheless we have formidable opponents in the Moorish government, and a class of fanatics, called shereefs, supposed to be in the direct lineage of the Prophet. But as the Lord said unto Zerubbabel, so says He unto us: "Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of Hosts" (Zech. iv. 6). "If God be for us, who can be against us" (Rom. viii. 31). Some writers speak of the benign influence which Mohammedanism exerts over its followers; but during a close observance of seven years I have failed to see it.
