Book excerpt: Did Jesus come to save only the Jews? That was the question that Luke is determined to answera "and answer it, he will! Luke, a local physician and beloved townsman, is drawn into the growing movement of first century Christians in Antioch by an unpleasant first encounter with a disagreeable and xenophobic Saul of Tarsus. Through a childhood friend, Luke learned the news of what had happened to a young rabbi from Nazareth, thus becoming the catalyst for Luke's journey of faith. After completing his medical education at the Alexandrian School of Medicine, Luke's second encounter with Saul, now calling himself Paul, will change his life forever. As physician to the Apostle who is called by the Lord to take the Gospel to the Gentiles, Luke begins to discover the answer to his troubling question, 'Did Jesus die only for the Jews?' Encouraged by Jesus's mother to write down Jesus's story, Luke journeys with the missionaries to the cities of Asia Minor and then Greece itself. It is the martyrdom of his old friend that convinces Luke that the Lord was calling him to take his place. With his son now studying in Alexandria like his father before him, Luke carries the good news into the one province Paul had not been able to go, and settles down in the town of Bithniya as physician and bishop, where his faith will be put to the ultimate test. The Pen and the Scalpel tells the story of one of the most prolific writers of the New Testament. In this unforgettable journey, author William Collins reveals Luke's passion and determination to journey with Paul and ultimately discover the truth of Jesus's teachings."

And it is of this Lucanus that Taylor Caldwell tells here in one of the most stirring stories ever lived or written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excerpt from the beginning of the PREFACE: THE words and phrases cited in this work are either peculiar to the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, or else, though not peculiar to them, are for the most part more frequently employed in these writings than in those of the other N. T. authors. The extant Greek medical writers from whom the examples of the medical use of such words are taken are Hippocrates, B. C. 460-357; Aretaeus, who lived in the first century after Christ, probably in the reign of Nero or Vespasian; Gralen, A.D. 130-200; and Dioscorides, who lived in the first or second century of the Christian era. The edition of these writers quoted is that of Kühn (Leipsic 1821-30). Hippocrates is quoted by the Sections of Foësius; Aretaeus, by those of the Ed. Oxon., both of which are given in Kühn; Dioscorides, by the usual division of chapters. Gralen's works are so extensive, occupying twenty-one volumes in Kühn's edition, that they have been quoted by the volume and page (appended in brackets), as well as by the titles and sections of the several treatises. In order to bring the work within reasonable bounds, it was found necessary that the number of examples of the medical use of a word should not, in any case, exceed ten; in many instances they could be cited indefinitely. The few cases in which they are not of very frequent use in the medical authors have been noticed under the words, and the examples have, generally speaking, been taken, as far as possible, from all the medical authors, to show the continuous and varied use of the words in medical language. An asterisk has been prefixed to those words which are peculiar to the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, and also to a few words, which, though not peculiar to these writings, are used in them alone of the New Testament in a medical sense. A Note has been appended, at the end of the book, which, though not strictly connected with the subject of the work, has reference to a question which is of some interest in connexion with St. Luke in his medical capacity.
Book Synopsis Images of Illness in the Gospel of Luke by : Annette Weissenrieder
Download or read book Images of Illness in the Gospel of Luke written by Annette Weissenrieder and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2003 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the illness-related terminology of the Gospel against the background of classical medical texts, Annette Weissenrieder examines the degree to which ancient medical knowledge was incorporated into the healing narratives of the Gospel of Luke. Thus, her work focuses on the crossroads of theology and medical history. Her primary reference is the Corpus Hippocraticum, supplemented by the writings of Soranus, Empedocles and Caelius Aurelianus. She also examines Jewish sources in the light of these secular medical texts. The premise of the study is the constructivist concept that has been developed in the context of 'writing the history of the body': that there is no objective view of the sick body. Every description of the body is formed by the cultural norms of a particular society, and society's culture influences the way in which any given illness is seen.In investigating concepts of medicine prevalent in antiquity, Annette Weissenrieder brings to light the cultural parameters of perception specific to Luke. She deals with gender-specific images of illness as well as with those associated with impurity or demonic possession. Her analysis confirms that the concepts of illness used by the Lucan author were profoundly characteristic of his time. She demonstrates how he uses these concepts to make his central message plausible: the presence of divine reality in the human sphere which can be experienced by both the physical body and the social body.

Download or read book St. Luke the Evangelist written by Kevin McCarthy and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-05-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know relatively little about St. Luke the Evangelist: that he was a Syrian of Antioch, a physician by profession, a disciple of the apostles of Jesus, and a follower of St. Paul on several of the latter's journeys. Looking closely at the third Gospel and at the Acts of the Apostles, as well as texts about ancient medicine, medical training, and the influence of Luke on subsequent writers and artists, we can begin to flesh out more details about his life. This book uses illustrations to better explain Luke's time and his later influence on many who followed him.

Book Synopsis The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles by : Franklin Scott Spencer
Download or read book The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles written by Franklin Scott Spencer and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces literary, historical, and theological issues of Luke and Acts. Biblical texts create worlds of meaning, and invite readers to enter them. When readers enter such textual worlds, which are often strange and complex, they are confronted with theological claims. With this in mind, the purpose of the Interpreting Biblical Texts series is to help serious readers in their experience of reading and interpreting by providing guides for their journeys into textual worlds. The controlling perspective is expressed in the operative word of the title--interpreting. The primary focus of the series is not so much on the world behind the texts or out of which the texts have arisen as on the worlds created by the texts in their engagement with readers. In keeping with the goals of the series, this volume provides an introductory guide to readers of the New Testament books of Luke and Acts. It focuses on both the synchronic and diachronic dimensions of the literature in an effort to acquaint readers with literary, historical, and theological issues that will facilitate interpretation of these important books. F. Scott Spencer is Professor of New Testament at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond.
