Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Histories and Reflections In the present state of the profession, a critical view of our actual knowledge of diseases, and of the prevailing methods of treatment, would be a most valuable work, if judiciously executed. To an individual, great benefit must always result, from reviewing his own opinions and prac tice, from rejudging himself, and endeavouring to improve on his former exertions. This task I have attempted, in the present edition, as far as my leisure would permit, and with all the impartiality of which I am capable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the major texts in the history of tongue diagnosis are presented and put into context in this volume, reaffirming the strength of tongue diagnosis as a core diagnostic method. These key texts are made available to western readers for the first time, with typical, traditional Chinese editions reproduced alongside the translation. The author provides an excellent overview of the tongue diagnosis theories in the major classics prior to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), and discusses significant developments and publications. The Gold Mirror Records, first published in 1341, was a popular manual for centuries, appearing in many editions and variations. Tongue Reflections in Cold Damage, first published in 1668, developed the field of diagnosis as a whole by adopting the analysis of tongue colour as its main principle. Both texts are introduced with meticulous English translations and notes. This seminal text will give practitioners and students of Chinese medicine a sound understanding of the theory and practice of tongue diagnosis from the early texts, and will be of interest to academic readers of classic Chinese texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Sentinel The method in vogue in most courts of calling expert medical men is no credit to the legal or the medical fraternity. Whether the proposition is one that the defendant was insane when he committed the alleged crime; or that the plaintiff seeking to recover from a rich corporation is a malingerer and a hypocrite; whether the man died from poison administered by the defendant or from natural causes, there can, it is sad to say, generally be found so-called experts who will swear whichever way they are paid to swear. Such witnesses are never prominent members of the profession. But whenever such testimony is given, which is influenced by the dollars received from one side or the other, a reflection of a discreditable character is cast upon the entire profession to which such witnesses belong. The com ments of the newspapers - their jokes in their funny columns - te garding the matter do not merely reflect on the individual physicians who permit themselves to be placed in an equivocal position, but on all other physicians in the community. Physicians are human, but not more than one in a hundred will be influenced in his testimony a hair's breadth by the fact that he receives fees for his services from one side or the other. But the one in a hundred - assuming that that is a proper proportion - is willing to be influenced, and the lawyer who approaches him outlines in every particular the sort of questions he will ask, on direct examination, and indicates the sort of answers he desires in return. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of the History of Medicine: Based Upon a Course of Lectures Delivered in the University of Buffalo The history of medicine has been sadly neglected in our medical schools. The valuable and fruitful lessons which it tells Of what not to do have been completely dis regarded, and in consequence the same gross errors have over and over been repeated. The following pages repre sent an effort to bring the most important facts and events comprised within such history into the compass of a med ical curriculum, and, at the same time, to rehearse them in such manner that the book may be useful and acceptable to the interested layman, to popularize the subject. This effort first took form in a series of lectures given in the Medical Department Of the University of Buffalo. The subject-matter of these lectures has been rearranged, enlarged, and edited, in order to make it more presentable for easy reading and reference. I have also tried, so far as I could in such brief space, to indicate the relationship which has ever existed between medicine, philosophy, natural science, theology, and even belles-zettres. Par ticularly is the history of medicine inseparable from a con sideration Of the various notions and beliefs that have at times shaken the very foundation of Christendom and the Church, and for reasons which appear throughout the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Medical Literature: From 1776 to the Present Time IN opening the fifty-first course of lectures in this school, I desire to spend the hour allotted to me for this purpose 'in the discussion of a subject which, it seems to me, is eminently appropriate to the occasion. Half a century has passed since this school came into existence, and we are on the eve of the anniversary of our national independence. In a few months more the clock of Time will strike the hour of twelve, and usher in the birth of a new century for forty millions of freemen, living in peace and happiness, literally their own governors and their own legislators. We, a portion of this immense hive of human beings, representing almost every nationality on the habitable globe, are assembled here this evening to see what the century, now rapidly passing away, has done for our great profession, and what, in turn, the incoming one has a right to expect from you. Of your speaker, and of others like him, little more is to be expected; they are but links between the past and the present; and any light which they may have emitted will soon be obscured, if not lost, in the dim future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Relations of Medicine and Surgery: To the End of the Sixteenth Century, an Address Delivered at the St. Louis Congress in 1904 Secondly - or indeed it is another aspect of these reflections - the soul of the Middle Ages was a collective soul; its great works were the offspring not of individuals but of peoples. Who built the minsters, who painted the windows and the Books of Hours, who wrote the liturgies and chansons, we know not. As the churches, the liturgies, the manuscripts, the poetry and drama were achieve ments not so much of persons as of congregations, so also medieval learning was for the most part the learning of inspired crowds at the heels of a rhetorician.
