Download or read book The First Lady of Dirt written by Bill Poehler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible, little-known story of the first successful Black woman in the sport of auto racing in the United States. Early in her career, Cheryl Glass looked like a lock to become the first Black woman to compete in the Indianapolis 500. From racing quarter midget cars at ten years old to Indy Lights in her twenties, Cheryl was on her way towards a winning career in auto racing. In The First Lady of Dirt: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Racing Pioneer Cheryl Glass, Bill Poehler tells Cheryl’s full story for the first time. He recounts how Cheryl rapidly became the first successful Black woman in the sport, yet frequently encountered racist and sexist taunts from other drivers and fans throughout her career. While appearing to have it all—talent, ambition, looks—she faced many challenges on and off the track and her life soon spun out of control. Featuring exclusive interviews with Cheryl’s mother, friends, and competitors, The First Lady of Dirt takes you behind the scenes and in the driver’s seat of Cheryl’s life. Poehler, an amateur racer himself, places the reader at the track, smelling the dirt and fumes, hearing the roaring engines and crashing metal, and feeling Cheryl’s joy and pain. It’s the inspiring story of a racing pioneer and a tragic tale of the pressures that are often hidden from public view until it’s too late.
Book Synopsis Murdering Holiness by : Jim Phillips
Download or read book Murdering Holiness written by Jim Phillips and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murdering Holiness explores the story of the "Holy Roller" sect led by Franz Creffield in the early years of the twentieth century. In the opening chapters, the authors introduce us to the community of Corvallis, Oregon, where Creffield, a charismatic, self-styled messiah, taught his followers to forsake their families and worldly possessions and to seek salvation through him. As his teachings became more extreme, the local community reacted: Creffield was tarred and feathered and his followers were incarcerated in the state asylum. Creffield himself was later imprisoned for adultery, but shortly after his release he revived the sect. This proved too much for some of the adherents' families, and in May 1906 George Mitchell, the brother of two women in the sect, pursued Creffield to Seattle and shot him dead.

In Wrecking Crew, Ferak lays out high-profile lawyer Kathleen Zellner’s post-conviction strategy to free Avery. “Whatever you thought you believed about this infamous case, get ready to change your mind or be more convinced than ever . . . Fascinating.” —Steve Jackson, New York Times bestselling author My Brother’s Keeper: The moment he found out his brother Gary was missing and presumed dead, Ted Kergan launched a relentless effort to bring two suspected killers to justice and find Gary’s body. Little did he know his quest would consume a fortune and take thirty years to reach its dramatic conclusion. An International Book Awards Finalist! “A thirty-year search for the truth . . . a story of persistence, determination, and deep brotherly love.” —Denise Wallace, author of Daddy’s Little Secret Summary Execution: On June 1, 1981, two young activists, Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes, were murdered in Seattle in what was made to appear like a gang slaying. But the victims’ families and friends suspected they were considered a threat to Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his regime’s relationship to the United States. “Remarkable . . . The story has so many twists—as well as amazing turns—that prove the point that conspiracy theories aren’t necessarily fiction.” —Eric Nalder, Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist
