Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Clinical Anatomy: For Students and Practitioners Many changes have taken place in the leaching of anatomy during the past twenty years. The rapid development of the various branches of practical medicine and surgery has necessitated a most thorough preparation in the fundamental subjects, such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and pathology. In the majority of our medical schools descriptive anatomy accompanied by dissections is taught during the first two years, and then the student feels that he may consider anatomy a closed chapter. In but few of the colleges is he taught to take a perspective view, or, in other words, to study Regional or Topographic Anatomy. He has spent many hours in the memorizing of nerves, arteries, veins, and the description of viscera, but he is unable to apply this knowledge to clinical work. The primary object of this book is to serve as a bridge for both practitioner and student from the descriptive anatomy, as it is usually taught in the first two years of a medical course, to its daily application at the bedside, in the clinic, or in the operating room. The term "Clinical Anatomy" seemed to be the most appropriate one to use to express the larger field which the subject covers. The term was first employed in this sense by Dr. A. D. Bevan, to convey the fact that clinical anatomy is anatomical knowledge as applied to every branch of clinical work - i. e., not only medicine and surgery in the narrower sense, but all the specialties. In teaching this subject to third year medical students the author felt the need of a text-book which should cover not only the surgical but also the medical portion of the subject, and he hopes that the work will not be found to have been written from the standpoint of the surgeon alone. An especial attempt has been made to encourage both practitioners and students to examine the normal human body during life, to palpate and outline structures, and to study the relations of nerves, vessels, viscera, etc., the knowledge of whose position is indispensable to every one engaged in the practice of medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Surgical Anatomy, Regionally Presented, for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine The study' of Anatomy is relieved of much of its difficulty when it is approached on the practical side. Isolated details do not appeal to the faculty of interest, but when they are set forth in their natural relationship, and their practical application is pointed out, the mind grasps and recollects them with facility. As Anatomy is the most basic of all the medical sciences, a working knowledge of its data is indispensable for the study and practice of scientific medicine and sur gery. The author has endeavored to embody these principles in the present work, and to do it in such a manner as to answer the needs of both students and practitioners. The plan of the work has been developed from twelve years' experience in teaching Anatomy. The author believes the form of presentation he has followed to be the best for didactic lectures, and that descriptive Anatomy is most advantageously learned from text books and in the dissecting room. The regional and topographical method of treating Applied Anatomy is likewise the most convenient for clinical purposes. It is scarcely necessary to state that in order not to exceed the proper limits of a book designed for clinical and didactic purposes a most careful selection had to be made from the vast aggregate of knowledge constituting the modern science of anatomy. If in parts the text may appear quite as much like an anatomical surgery as a surgical anatomy, it is because of the author's belief that this is the best way to complete the study of anatomy and to begin the study of surgery. Book excerpt: The field of anatomy is dynamic and fertile. The rapid advances in technology in the past few years have produced exciting opportunities in the teaching of gross anatomy such as 3D printing, virtual reality, augmented reality, digital anatomy models, portable ultrasound, and more. Pedagogical innovations such as gamification and the flipped classroom, among others, have also been developed and implemented. As a result, preparing anatomy teachers in the use of these new teaching tools and methods is very timely. The main aim of the second edition of Teaching Anatomy – A Practical Guide is to offer gross anatomy teachers the most up-to-date advice and guidance for anatomy teaching, utilizing pedagogical and technological innovations at the forefront of anatomy education in the five years since the publication of the first edition. This edition is structured according to the teaching and learning situations that gross anatomy teachers will find themselves in: large group setting, small group setting, gross anatomy laboratory, writing examination questions, designing anatomy curriculum, using anatomy teaching tools, or building up their scholarship of teaching and learning. Fully revised and updated, including fifteen new chapters discussing the latest advances, this second edition is an excellent resource for all instructors in gross anatomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gray's Anatomy is probably one of the most iconic scientific books ever published: an illustrated textbook of anatomy that is still a household name 150 years since its first edition, known for its rigorously scientific text, and masterful illustrations as beautiful as they are detailed. The Making of Mr Gray's Anatomy tells the story of the creation of this remarkable book, and the individuals who made it happen: Henry Gray, the bright and ambitious physiologist, poised for medical fame and fortune, who was the book's author; Carter, the brilliant young illustrator, lacking Gray's social advantages, shy and inclined to religious introspection; and the publishers - Parkers, father and son, the father eager to employ new technology, the son part of a lively circle of intellectuals. It is the story of changing attitudes in the mid-19th century; of the social impact of science, the changing status of medicine; of poverty and class; of craftsmanship and technology. And it all unfolds in the atmospheric milieu of Victorian London - taking the reader from the smart townhouses of Belgravia, to the dissection room of St George's Hospital, and to the workhouses and mortuaries where we meet the friendless poor who would ultimately be immortalised in Carter's engravings. Alongside the story of the making of the book itself, Ruth Richardson reflects on what made Gray's Anatomy such a unique intellectual, artistic, and cultural achievement - how it represented a summation of a long half century's blossoming of anatomical knowledge and exploration, and how it appeared just at the right time to become the 'Doctor's Bible' for generations of medics to follow.
