A child of three years of age, demanding mechanical relief, with a fatal termination. I saw this Child at the request of Dr. Mallan. It was after twelve at night that I was called to see the child with Dr. Mallan. The boy had been sick for sev eral days with what appeared a simple laryngitis with slight audi ble respiration. During the twenty-four hours preceding my visit the breathing had become more and more labored. The child's condition demanded immediate relief, which was given through the introduction of an intubation tube. The voice was only slightly hoarse. In order to safeguard the child, antitoxin was also administered. Culture proved negative. Child died on the second day after intubation, from pneumonia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Annals of the District of Columbia, 1939, Vol. 8: Successor to Washington Medical Annals, the Bulletin of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia; Official Publication of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia The patient on 3 feedings a day and 27 units of protamine insulin had a blood sugar of zero, while on 20 units of protamine insulin the fluctuation was between 60 and 80 mg. The patient who had the appendectomy had been receiving 8 units of protamine insulin before the operation. Afterwards, no insulin was needed while the patient was in the hos pital on a lower caloric diet. The day after the child returned to the camp on a full diet, the fasting blood sugar was 270 mg., but without any insulin this was down to 150 mg. By pm. The blood sugar remained within normal limits and no insulin was needed up until the time of discharge, which was 2 weeks after the operation. All the other patients were dis charged on an increased dosage from that ad ministered when first at camp. The subject of a Presidential Address is a debatable one. Shall it be an oration in medicine; shall it treat of the practical or literary side of medicine; shall it be a review of the year's activities; or shall it depict, for pattern, a model society? The question of ease or difficulty in the treatment of the subject has no place in the selec tion of the subject. The decision as to the subject should be made in the light of the President's conception Of his responsi bility to the Society. This view has constrained me to eschew the congenial, and to pass in review before you some of the events of the year, with observations as to two of the Society's needs. First, let me express to the entire membership of the Society a sense of my deep appreciation of its uniform courtesy and consideration, of its generous forbearance, and Of its hearty cooperation - to all Of which any success which my administration may have achieved 18 due. No terms are sufficiently expressive of my appreciation of the loyalty of the Recording and Corresponding Secretaries. I feel that I could not have measured up in any appreciable degree to the requirements of the Presidential office without their intelligent aid and generous support. During the year nine of our members have passed from our view. Medical endeavor has felt the impulse of their contact, the stimulus Of their enthusiasm, and the encouragement of their achievements. They wrought well and our heritage is made richer by their having been with us and of us. Their names are inscribed in the temple of memory, and in honor of them we here record their names: Eugene C.
