Book excerpt: To accurately predict the life of turbine blade, accurate temperature predictions are necessary. It is widely accepted that the life of a turbine blade can be reduced by half if the temperature prediction of the metal blade is off by only 30°C. This paper extends Iterative Conjugate Heat Transfer (ICHT) and Reduced Order Film Modeling (ROFM) to include spanwise variation in film cooling parameters by developing a model to extend the spanwise-averaged correlations into two-dimensional correlations, implement a superposition model for multiple row injection, and implement a model for coolant warming to increase the accuracy of these temperature predictions. Three-dimensional temperature distributions in film cooled solids are calculated using ICHT-ROFM. ICHT is used to obtain conjugate temperature profiles using a loosely coupled system. The convective heat transfer is calculated on a similar blade without film-cooling while under the same flow conditions. The heat transfer coefficients are corrected by use of experimental data or correlations to incorporate the effect of film-cooling on the heat transfer coefficients. This is called Reduced Order Film Cooling (ROFM). ROFM needs experimental input for film cooling effectiveness and film heat transfer coefficients. The developed correlations were used to predict the temperature downstream from a cooling hole for various conductivity and plate thicknesses for both spanwise averaged cooling parameters (1D) and spanwise varied parameters (2D). It was found that the spanwise averaged calculations underpredict temperatures, relative to the new model, by around 4% for Biot values similar to first row cooling holes in turbine blade applications. Coolant warming was also accounted for and implemented in ICHT-ROFM method. It was found that coolant warming through the cooling holes causes about a 1% increase in surface temperatures for the case considered. While not significant, it is expected that in turbine applications, the coolant warming will be more significant, leading to larger increases in surface temperature.

Pressure-side film cooling slots have gained widespread usage for cooling the thin trailing edge of the blade. To maximize engine efficiency and blade lifetime, both the flow through these slots and the heat transfer into the blades should be minimized. The turbulent mixing of the coolant flow with the main flow decreases the coolant concentration at the blade surface, and thereby degrades the film cooling performance. Current steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models drastically under-predict the mixing between the coolant flow and the main flow and are therefore not useful in heat transfer predictions. More complex simulations, such as Detached Eddy Simulations, Scale-Adaptive Simulations, and Large Eddy Simulations, while more accurate, are highly sensitive to inlet conditions and wall models. There is significant demand for improved models for trailing edge slot film cooling flows that are easy to implement and robust. This research employed a dual experimental and computational approach with the goal of establishing a framework for more efficient design and testing of advanced airfoil trailing edge configurations. On the experimental side, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was used to obtain 3D velocity and concentration data for a range of trailing edge configurations. Configurations with varying land taper angles and internal structures were investigated. It was shown that the land taper angle affects the secondary flow structures and coolant distribution both on the breakout surface and in the wake of the trailing edge. These MRI data sets provided an extensive database for the development and validation of improved turbulent mixing models. When combined with the work of a previous doctoral student, they included variation in Reynolds number, slot width, blowing ratio, land configuration and internal geometry. These studies not only broadened understanding of how these features impact the film cooling performance, but also served to challenge new turbulence models to ensure their generality across flow configurations. Computational efforts were aimed at using the MRI data sets to improve turbulence modeling of trailing edge slot film cooling flows. Because MRI provides a full volumetric velocity field, this field could be used as an input to the Reynolds Averaged Advection Diffusion equation, along with a specified turbulent diffusivity function, to calculate the mean coolant concentration distribution. The difference between the calculated and experimentally measured concentration distributions could be minimized to yield an optimized turbulent diffusivity function. This approach enabled the determination of the key features which a scalar flux model must capture in order to accurately model trailing edge slot film cooling flows. It was demonstrated that if the correct turbulent diffusivity magnitude and spatial variation are prescribed, then the simple isotropic gradient diffusion hypothesis is sufficient to accurately predict the coolant concentration distribution. Analysis of the optimal turbulent Schmidt number over different regions of interest revealed that the Reynolds analogy was inappropriate in the near wall region. Based on these results, a new near wall correction was proposed which consisted of removing the Van Driest damping function from the turbulent diffusivity formulation. This correction was shown to significantly improve adiabatic effectiveness predictions and to generalize well across the experimental database.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Gas turbines are a major contributor to world power generation with applications ranging from electricity production to aircrafts propulsion. Their efficiency is subject to continuous research. A gas turbine's overall efficiency is directly proportional to flow inlet temperature. Various methods are implemented to protect hot gas path components from mainstream flow well above their melting temperature, namely, heat resistant coatings, internal cooling and film cooling. The latter is the subject of this work. A 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model is solved using ANSYS CFX software and compared to experimental measurements of film cooled transonic vane cascade operating at a Mach number of 0.89; the experimental data used for validation is provided by Heat and Power Technology Department of the Royal Institute of Technology (Kungliga Tekniska Hogskolan, KTH) of Stockholm, Sweden. A new approach was used to model the film cooling holes, omitting the need to model both the coolant plenum and cooling tubes, resulting in 180% reduction in grid size and attributed computational cost interpreted in 300% saving in computation time. The new approach was validated on a basic flow problem (flat plate film cooling) and was found to give good agreement with experimental measurements of velocity and temperature at a blowing ratio (BR) of 1 and 2; the experimental data for the flat plate was provided by NASA's Glenn Research Center. The numerical simulation of the cooled vane cascade was compared to experimental measurements for different cooling configurations and different BRs. a) One row on pressure side at BR = 0.8, 0.96 and 2.5. b) Two rows on suction side (location 1) at BR = 0.8, 1.4 and 2.5. c) Two rows on suction side (location 2) at BR = 0.8. And d) Showerhead cooled vane at BR ranges between 1.98 and 5.84. The coolant was applied at the same temperature as the mainstream, to match experimental conditions. A good agreement with the experimental measurements was obtained for exit flow angle, vorticity downstream of the vane, pressure coefficients and aerodynamic loss. The proposed approach of coolant injection modeling is shown to yield reliable results, within the uncertainty of the measurements in most cases. Along with lower computational cost compared to conventional film cooling modeling approach, the new approach is recommended for further analysis for aero and thermal vane cascade flows.

Book excerpt: Falling Liquid Films gives a detailed review of state-of-the-art theoretical, analytical and numerical methodologies, for the analysis of dissipative wave dynamics and pattern formation on the surface of a film falling down a planar inclined substrate. This prototype is an open-flow hydrodynamic instability, that represents an excellent paradigm for the study of complexity in active nonlinear media with energy supply, dissipation and dispersion. It will also be of use for a more general understanding of specific events characterizing the transition to spatio-temporal chaos and weak/dissipative turbulence. Particular emphasis is given to low-dimensional approximations for such flows through a hierarchy of modeling approaches, including equations of the boundary-layer type, averaged formulations based on weighted residuals approaches and long-wave expansions. Whenever possible the link between theory and experiment is illustrated, and, as a further bridge between the two, the development of order-of-magnitude estimates and scaling arguments is used to facilitate the understanding of basic, underlying physics. This monograph will appeal to advanced graduate students in applied mathematics, science or engineering undertaking research on interfacial fluid mechanics or studying fluid mechanics as part of their program. It will also be of use to researchers working on both applied, fundamental theoretical and experimental aspects of thin film flows, as well as engineers and technologists dealing with processes involving isothermal or heated films. This monograph is largely self-contained and no background on interfacial fluid mechanics is assumed.
