Book excerpt: Emission of Oxides of nitrogen and particulates matters from diesel engines have been reduced by implementing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) protocols but at the expense of increased wear of engine components. This problem is aggravated by Environment Protection Agency (EPA) regulation such as API CJ 4 and SAPS where chemical limits have been places on the amount of phosphorous, sulfur and sulfated ash in lubrication oil. Several studies have examined the role played by diesel soot on enhanced wear but none have provided comprehensive mechanism. This would allow the possibility to comprehend fundamental understanding of soot induced wear mechanism of diesel engine. This work begins with a study of the structure, composition and morphology of diesel soot extracted from the drain interval crankcase oil of the commercially operated diesel engine to comprehend the interaction between lubrication additives chemistries and diesel soot. The interaction was comprehended by characterizing diesel soot using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy (SR-XRD), X-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) and High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The tribological assessment of the lubricant formulation blended with diesel soot was conducted using four ball wear tester and SRV friction tester. Laboratory simulation was carried out understand the interaction between lubricants additives chemistries and carbon black (soot surrogate). Carbon black was blended with lubricants and treated in various conditions to forced the interaction and thereby comprehend the conditions that are responsible to induced the interaction between carbon black (soot surrogate) and lubricants additives chemistries. XANES, TEM and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the structure, composition and morphology of extracted carbon black and compared with diesel soot. Four ball wear tested and SRV friction test were employed for tribological evaluation. SEM was used to understand the morphology of wear track. Diesel soots were also extracted from the dynamometer diesel engine tests such as Mack T 8A, Mack T 11, Mack T 12, Cummins ISM, Cummins ISM, GM RFWT. Diesel soots extracted from the drain interval crankcase oil of the dynamometer tests have experienced controlled engine operation. Studies were conducted to correlate the effect of operational parameters such as load, speed, temperature and oil chemistries of the dynamometer engine test and structure and composition of diesel soot. Engine components such as piston ring, header, roller follower pin were also investigated to understand the effect of diesel soot on tribofilm formation and its structure. XANES, HRTEM, SR-XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM were used to examine the soot and tribofilm.

Book excerpt: Contamination of the lube-oil with hard abrasive particles leads to a three-body abrasive wear mechanism that highly accelerates piston ring/cylinder liner wear in coal-fueled diesel engines. One approach to reducing that wear is to modify the size and orientation of surface asperities on the cylinder to enhance the formation of a hydrodynamic film, and to provide avenues of escape for particles that would otherwise be trapped in the wear zone. Another approach is to introduce additives into the contaminated lube-oil that further enhance hydrodynamic film formation, form chemical films on the wearing surfaces, or form films on the contaminant particles. This work focuses on defining the effects of cylinder liner surface finish, various configurations of slots in the cylinder liner surface, and various additives in the contaminated lube-oil on the wear process. Wear tests were initiated in a bench apparatus using coal-ash contaminated lube-oil to test the various wear configurations. The results of these tests indicate that the formation of a hydrodynamic film between the ring and cylinder specimens is enhanced by increasing surface roughness, and by orienting the surface asperities normal to the direction of ring travel but modifications to the cylinder liner surface did not greatly reduce the wear rate. Additives to the lubricant seemed to have a much more significant effect on wear, with a dispersant additive highly accelerating the wear, while a detergent additive was able to reduce the wear almost to the rate achieved where there was no contaminant.

Book excerpt: Previous studies have demonstrated that the durability of some fuel injection systems on compression-ignition engines will be adversely affected by fuels of sufficiently low lubricity. However, no widely accepted lubricity measure is available; indeed, the wear mechanisms present have not been conclusively defined. The results of the present study indicate that oxidative corrosion is the predominant mechanism with very highly processed fuels, resulting in catastrophic wear and rapid failure. A laboratory test procedure directed toward the oxidative wear mechanism was evaluated and a number of modifications suggested. Two closely related laboratory wear test procedures that rely on the transition from mild boundary lubricated wear to adhesive scuffing were also developed. The resulting procedures allow the fuels to be either ranked using a continuous scale or separated using a simple pass/fail criteria. All the procedures are sensitive to the addition of trace quantities of lubricity additives and show directional correlation with refinery severity, as measured by sulfur and aromatic content. As a result, the tests produced excellent correlation with full-scale equipment tests performed at a number of locations, as well as the criteria necessary for oxidative corrosion. However, the scuffing load tests show greatly increased separation between good and unacceptable fluids compared to the oxidative corrosion tests. Evaluation of commercially available fuels indicates that fuel lubricity is decreasing and that very poor lubricity fuels are occasionally observed.
