Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanism, Life and Personality: An Examination of the Mechanistic, Theory of Life and Mind This book consists of four lectures which were delivered in the Physiological Laboratory of Guy's Hospital, during May of this year, as a London University course for senior students. They are reproduced in the form of their delivery, after careful revision, in which I have been much aided by the criticisms and suggestions of my friend Professor J. T. Wilson, F.R.S. Philosophical readers who may have chanced to see an essay by my brother and myself on 'The Relations of Philosophy to Science' in Essays in Philosophical Criticism, published in 1883, will recognise in these lectures a development of the ideas put forward in that essay. Haldane challenges the mechanistic theory of life and mind that was prevalent in the early 20th century. He argues that life cannot be reduced to a series of chemical reactions, and that there is more to human consciousness than can be explained by brain function. Haldane's insightful critique of mechanistic thinking remains relevant today. These sources dwell upon the moments at which ideas became challenged, when facts were revealed to be fiction, and when knowns reverted to unknowns. But the focus is not the ideas and facts themselves, but on the ways in which scientists adjusted themselves to new landscapes of uncertainty in their particular cultural and professional practices.

Book Synopsis The Birth of Energy by : Cara New Daggett
Download or read book The Birth of Energy written by Cara New Daggett and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Birth of Energy Cara New Daggett traces the genealogy of contemporary notions of energy back to the nineteenth-century science of thermodynamics to challenge the underlying logic that informs today's uses of energy. These early resource-based concepts of power first emerged during the Industrial Revolution and were tightly bound to Western capitalist domination and the politics of industrialized work. As Daggett shows, thermodynamics was deployed as an imperial science to govern fossil fuel use, labor, and colonial expansion, in part through a hierarchical ordering of humans and nonhumans. By systematically excavating the historical connection between energy and work, Daggett argues that only by transforming the politics of work—most notably, the veneration of waged work—will we be able to confront the Anthropocene's energy problem. Substituting one source of energy for another will not ensure a habitable planet; rather, the concepts of energy and work themselves must be decoupled.
