Book excerpt: It’s the person she least expected who provides a much-needed tune up of her life... For Dr. Irene Johnson-Moore perception is everything. After living most of her life behind facades built from other people’s expectations, she’s ready for a change. At least that’s what she tells herself. But old habits die hard. And when her car breaks down, forcing her to deal with the town mechanic—a woman whose bluntness always irked Irene—her resolve is instantly put to the test. Remi Martin prides herself on being unapologetically honest. Brutally so at times. No good ever came from pretending to be someone or something she’s not. When she responds to a call from a stranded motorist, she never imagined she’d be towing the self-proclaimed “town princess” into her world. Irene Johnson embodies everything Remi tries to avoid, yet she can’t seem to shake her one-time adversary. However, the more time they spend together, the more feelings begin to idle under the surface. But before their relationship can rev to life, they must release their preconceived notions or things could come to a screeching halt.

Book excerpt: What did Napoleon Bonaparte, Henry Ford, and Andrew Carnegie all have in common as the key to their success? They each had immense confidence in their goals. They left no room or quarter for failure. They had faith. Author Paul Ramseyer takes the works of Napoleon Hill, a leading expert on success, and shows readers how to apply the same principles to their faith in God. Paul discovered how to use this power to drive stage 4 cancer out of his body. He also shows the reader how the Bible commands that requests in prayer be made in faith. He goes on to explain how this required faith is the only method we have to reach our full potential. With examples drawn from the most successful men in history, Paul doesn't just tell you to have faith, but teaches how you, like they, can decide to claim it and then gives detailed instructions how you can put it to work on your behalf. Are people sick, stuck in poverty, or victims to repeating sins? He shows readers that they don't have to be. In faith, all things are possible. With the Mechanics of Faith, readers are able to see how faith works to produce in their lives the results that they have been promised. Paul Ramseyer lives in Bloomfield, Iowa. In 2006, Paul learned from the past masters of industry and technology and the Bible how to drive stage four cancer from his body and is called to teach people everywhere how they too can be overcomers and not mere victims of circumstance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of concepts of bestowal, appraisal, imagination, and idealization followed by explorations into the writings of thinkers that include Plato, Ovid, and Martin Luther. Irving Singer's trilogy The Nature of Love has been called "majestic" (New York Times Book Review), "monumental" (Boston Globe), "one of the major works of philosophy in our century" (Nous), "wise and magisterial" (Times Literary Supplement), and a "masterpiece of critical thinking [that] is a timely, eloquent, and scrupulous account of what, after all, still makes the world go round" (Christian Science Monitor). In the first volume, Singer begins by studying love as appraisal and bestowal as well as imagination and idealization. He then examines the contrasting views of Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Ovid, Lucretius, Saint Augustine, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Martin Luther. After having described the nature of erotic idealization, Singer analyzes the religious idealization in Judeo-Christian concepts of eros, philia, nomos, and agape. Medieval Catholicism sought to combine these four ideas of love in the "caritas synthesis." Luther repudiated that attempt on the grounds that love exists only in God's agapastic bestowal of unlimited goodness upon humanity and all of nature. In relation to the different modes of theorizing, Singer explores the humanistic implications of each.

Book excerpt: Adam Wendover is not in a good mood when he walks out of a meeting in Florence, Colorado, and realizes he is going to have to drive back to Denver in a snowstorm, and the main interstate is a parking lot. Deciding that all-wheel drive and luck will give him better odds of getting home, he gambles on a winding mountain road instead. And then he promptly hits a large rock. Franklin "Rust" Scott has lived in a small mountain town his entire life. Abandoned by his mother to live with his gruff, mechanic grandfather, he enjoys running a repair shop and gas station along the highway. He's just getting ready to close the place down and go home to wait out the snow, when an expensive German import with bad suspension problems pulls into the parking lot. Neither of the two men were looking for romance, but close quarters can lead to unexpected things. As the snow melts, choices are made, a relationship is forged, and things begin to look up for both of them. It all seems so easy, at least until a character from Adam's past appears, determined to make him see reason and return to Boston with her. Please Note: This book contains adult language and steamy adult activities, it is intended for 18+ Adults Only. Novel, approximately 31,000 words in length. HEA (happy ever after ending). Does not end with a "cliffhanger." Themes include: Forced proximity, snow storm, cat, family drama, return of an ex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love – such a deceptively simple and popular little word. It is almost universally agreed that we need love in order to live and flourish as human beings; and yet within our contemporary culture there are numerous confusing, competing and evolving ideas about what ‘love’ is. There are few greater subjects in Christian theology than love; yet it is a surprisingly complex and challenging concept to understand, let alone live by. Patrick Mitchel’s conviction is that Christians need to be thinking about, and practising, love in compelling and winsome ways. Our task is not only to articulate what love is, but also to show to the world what authentic Christian love looks like in practice. ‘The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love’ (Gal. 5:6 NIV). Mitchel’s exposition explores love in the Old Testament; how the love of God is supremely revealed in the mission and death of Jesus Christ; love in the life and teaching of Jesus; and the church’s calling to be a community of love. He helps us to grasp afresh the breadth, depth, scope, and radically counter-cultural nature of the Bible’s teaching on love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Michael Field" was the pseudonym of two women writing as a male author: Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper, who were aunt and niece, and a devoted couple for three decades that spanned the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. While much has been written about the Fields' many volumes of poetry and plays, and about their strange and complicated life, this book is the first to focus on their diary, which they kept for twenty-five years and viewed as an "unpublished manuscript" called Works and Days. In this book, Dever argues that Works and Days represents one of the great experimental prose narratives of the transitional period between Victorian and modernist literature. Through the co-written diary, which fills twenty-nine volumes and about 9,500 pages, the women envisioned a life beyond the tight horizons of one home and one family, and portrayed new forms of women's intimacy at the dawn of the twentieth century. Dever focuses on five pivotal years in the life of Bradley and Cooper as reflected in the diary: the death of Cooper's mother; a year of personal and professional humiliation; the death of Cooper's father; the women's establishment of their home together; and the event they experience as a devastating loss, the death of their dog Whym Chow. In this examination of the Fields' most personal writing, Dever establishes their unlikely role as a bridge between the Victorians and the experiments of modernism to come"--

Book excerpt: What does love have to do with gaming? As games have grown in complexity, they have increasingly included narratives that seek to engage players with love in a variety of ways. While media attention often focuses on violent emotions and behavior in gaming, love has always been central to the experience. We love to play games, we have titles that we love, and sometimes we love too much or love terrible games for their shortcomings. Love in gaming is rather like love in life—often complicated and frustrating but also exciting and gratifying. This collection of fresh essays explores the meaning and role of love in gaming, describing a number of ways—from coding to cosplay—in which love can be expressed in, for and around games. Investigating how gaming involves love is also key to understanding the growing importance of games and gamers as cultural markers.
