Book excerpt: Retexturing of road surfacings by mechanical means in order to restore skidding resistance has been used for some years in the UK, because it is inexpensive, quick and takes advantage of the material already present. This report details the results of the first systematic study to assess the performance and durability of various treatments. Four techniques (scabbling, bush hammering, orthogonal flail grooving and shot-blasting), were studied in road trials, and their efficacy was assessed over a three year period. It was found that, when selected appropriately for a particular site, retexturing treatments are useful tools to enhance the skidding resistance of a surfacing which is at or near its investigatory level. The process can be used all year round and can provide two to three summers of enhancement under typical trunk road conditions.

Book excerpt: The introduction of standards for the skidding resistance of UK trunk roads has increased interest in alternative techniques for restoring road texture. This report covers the first part of a study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of mechanical retexturing of road surfaces. It reviews the systems available and makes an initial assessment of each method in terms of any improvements in skidding resistance or texture achieved in the early life of the treatments, together with any strengths or weaknesses for particular applications.

Book excerpt: Advances in Engineering Materials, Structures and Systems: Innovations, Mechanics and Applications comprises 411 papers that were presented at SEMC 2019, the Seventh International Conference on Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Computation, held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 2 to 4 September 2019. The subject matter reflects the broad scope of SEMC conferences, and covers a wide variety of engineering materials (both traditional and innovative) and many types of structures. The many topics featured in these Proceedings can be classified into six broad categories that deal with: (i) the mechanics of materials and fluids (elasticity, plasticity, flow through porous media, fluid dynamics, fracture, fatigue, damage, delamination, corrosion, bond, creep, shrinkage, etc); (ii) the mechanics of structures and systems (structural dynamics, vibration, seismic response, soil-structure interaction, fluid-structure interaction, response to blast and impact, response to fire, structural stability, buckling, collapse behaviour); (iii) the numerical modelling and experimental testing of materials and structures (numerical methods, simulation techniques, multi-scale modelling, computational modelling, laboratory testing, field testing, experimental measurements); (iv) innovations and special structures (nanostructures, adaptive structures, smart structures, composite structures, bio-inspired structures, shell structures, membranes, space structures, lightweight structures, long-span structures, tall buildings, wind turbines, etc); (v) design in traditional engineering materials (steel, concrete, steel-concrete composite, aluminium, masonry, timber, glass); (vi) the process of structural engineering (conceptualisation, planning, analysis, design, optimization, construction, assembly, manufacture, testing, maintenance, monitoring, assessment, repair, strengthening, retrofitting, decommissioning). The SEMC 2019 Proceedings will be of interest to civil, structural, mechanical, marine and aerospace engineers. Researchers, developers, practitioners and academics in these disciplines will find them useful. Two versions of the papers are available. Short versions, intended to be concise but self-contained summaries of the full papers, are in this printed book. The full versions of the papers are in the e-book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway Engineering covers all the necessary foundational material needed by civil engineers to address the analysis, design, and construction of highways. It covers central topics such as geometric, junction and pavement design, structural design, and pavement maintenance, while also ensuring students obtain an adequate grasp of traffic analysis. It places the topic in context by introducing the economic, political, social, environmental, and administrative dimensions of the subject – essential understanding for all engineers. Highway Engineering makes frequent reference to the Department of Transport’s Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and moves in a logical sequence from the planning and economic justification for a highway, through the geometric design and traffic analysis of highway links and intersections, including analysis for the increasingly important non-car-based modes of transport, to the design and maintenance of both flexible and rigid pavements.

Book excerpt: Roadwork Theory and Practice gives the essential information needed by every road worker, highway technician, incorporated, graduate or chartered engineer, not only by explaining the theory of road construction and its associated activities, but by illustrating its application with practical working methods that are in use in everyday engineering practice. As such, it successfully bridges the gap so often found between civil engineering theory and the day-to-day work of a highways engineer. Now in its fifth edition, this classic textbook has been fully revised in line with recent changes to EU standards, legislation, terminology and specifications. The new edition now includes end of chapter review questions and references for further reading. Students will find this text fully caters for the requirements of BTEC National and NVQ qualifications in construction, civil engineering and highways maintenance. In addition, content has been matched to the specifications of the new Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering from Edexcel. Professionals will find the new edition to be an invaluable up-to-date reference source, especially of relevance to recent graduates new to the work place.
