Book excerpt: The tensile behavior of dilute Ta-H and Ta-Mo alloys was studied as a function of alloying addition, grain size and test temperature at a constant strain rate. The results are interpreted in terms of the parameters sigma sub-i and k sub-y of the Petch equation. For Ta-H alloys at 25 C sigma sub-i was independent of hydrogen content whereas k sub-y increased with hydrogen content. Deformation twinning was not observed in Ta-H alloys either at 25 C or at -196 C. Dilute additions of Mo to Ta at 25 C resulted in an increase in k sub-y whereas sigma sub-i was unaffected. Twinning was observed at -196 C but not at 25 C.A large increase in ductility accompanied twinning.

Book excerpt: In mechanical tests of tantalum-tungsten alloys with nominal tungsten contents between 0 and 10 wt % for strain rates between 0.000016 and 6800sāˆ’1 and temperatures between 77 and 400 K, the addition of tungsten noticeably reduces the strain-rate dependence of the flow stress of tantalum near yield. It also subtly alters the strain-rate behavior of the work hardening, making it more like that of copper, an fcc metal. These effects are reflected in the limiting strains for uniform plastic deformation calculated from our flow curves. For unalloyed tantalum, the instability strain appears to drop dramatically for strain rates in excess of approximately 0.005sāˆ’1, whereas for tungsten bearing alloys, it remains unchanged or increases slightly. Tungsten alloys may therefore be preferable to unalloyed tantalum in applications that demand substantial ductility at high rates of strain. We briefly discuss possible mechanisms for plastic flow in tantalum and how they might be affected by tungsten additions to produce the effects we observe.

Book excerpt: Tantalum, like all bcc metals exhibits deformation behavior substantially influenced by alloying, temperature, and strain rate. Recently, the mechanical response, in particular the high-strain-rate response, of tantalum and tantalum alloys has received increased interest for ballistic applications. In this paper recent results on the influence of tungsten alloying additions on the mechanical response and starting crystallographic texture of tantalum-tungsten alloys are presented. The stress-strain behavior of three tantalum alloys containing 2.5, 5, and 10 wt. % W has been investigated as a function of loading path, tension and compression, and strain rate, 10āˆ’3 to 8000 sāˆ’1. The yield strength and work-hardening rate were found to increase with increasing tungsten alloying content compared to unalloyed Ta. Based on measurements of the surface and centerline textures of the Ta-W alloys, no systematic effect of tungsten content on texture was documented. However, due to variations in mechanical behavior between through-thickness and in-plane properties, a need for complete through-thickness texture measurements is indicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The critical resolved shear stress of tantalum base alloys was measured from -196C to 300C and of niobium base alloys from -196C to 1800C. The behavior at low temperatures is complex. Certain features can, however, be recognized as significant: Both indirect and direct interactions contribute to the critical resolved shear stress. At high temperatures solid solution hardening is associated with an elastic interaction between solute atoms and dislocations. The modulus misfit parameter is more important than the size misfit parameter in describing the hardening.

Book excerpt: The book describes behavior of materials (ductile, brittle and composites) under impact loadings and high strain rates. The three aspects: experimental, theoretical and numerical are in the focus of interest. Hopkinson bars are mainly used as experimental devices to describe dynamic behavior of materials. The precise description of experimental techniques and interpretation of wave interaction are carefully discussed. Theoretical background refers to rate dependent thermo viscoplastic formulation. This includes the discussion of well posedness of initial boundary value problems and the solution of the system of governing equations using numerical methods. Explicit time integration is used in computations to solve dynamic problems. In addition, many applications in aeronautic and automotive industries are exposed.

Book excerpt: Tensile tests were made on specimens of commercial Ta of different grain-sizes, and the variation of lower yield stress with grain-size 2d was used to assess the effect of temperature (23, -78 and -196 deg C) and strain-rate (0.0019 and 0.0996 sec. at each temperature) on the parameters sigma sub i and k sub y in a Petch type equation. The results indicate that the sensitivity of the yield strength to temperature and strain-rate arises almost entirely from the effects that these variables produce on sigma sub i. The high resistance of Ta to brittleness has been confirmed, all of the specimens showing pronounced necking and predominantly fibrous fractures; on the fracture surfaces of the coarser grained specimens tested at -196 deg C (both strain rates) some cleavage facets were observed. The greater ductility of Ta relative to Nb, Mo, and mild steel is attributed to a low value of k sub y and a high value of shear modulus.
