This invaluable primer contains the most essential integral transforms that both practicing engineers and students need to understand. It provides a large number of examples to explain the use of transforms in different areas, including circuit analysis, differential equations, signals and systems, and mechanical vibrations. Includes an appendix with suggestions and explanations to help you optimize your use of MATLAB Laplace and Fourier transforms are by far the most widely used and most useful of all integral transforms, so they are given a more extensive treatment in this book, compared to other texts that include them. Offering numerous MATLAB functions created by the author, this comprehensive book contains several appendices to complement the main subjects. Perhaps the most important feature is the extensive tables of transforms, which are provided to supplement the learning process. This book presents advanced material in a format that makes it easier to understand, further enhancing its immense value as a teaching tool for engineers and research scientists in academia and industry, as well as students in science and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Clear, Comprehensive Introduction to Standards in the Engineering Professions Standards supplement the design process by guiding the designer toward consistency, safety, and reliability. As daily life involves increasingly complex and sophisticated instruments, standards become indispensable engineering tools to ensure user safety and product quality. Primer on Engineering Standards: Expanded Textbook Edition delves into standards creation and compliance to provide students and engineers with a comprehensive reference. The different types of standards are dissected and discussed in terms of development, value, impact, interpretation, and compliance, and options are provided for situations where conformance is not possible. The process of standards creation is emphasized in terms of essential characteristics and common pitfalls to avoid, with detailed guidance on how, where, and with whom one may get involved in official development. Organized for both quick reference and textbook study, this new Expanded Textbook Edition provides a quick, clear understanding of critical concepts, ramifications, and implications as it: Introduces the concepts, history, and classification of standards, rules, and regulations Discusses the federal, state, and local government’s role in standards development and enforcement Distinguishes voluntary consensus standards, limited consensus standards, and jurisdictional versus non-jurisdictional government standards Covers the need for and process of exemptions to existing standards Examines the characteristics of a good standard, and discusses opportunities for involvement in development Includes case studies to demonstrate standards applications, and extensive appendices to direct further inquiry The successful design, fabrication, and operation of any product relies on foundational understanding of pertinent standards; indeed, standards and guidelines form a central pillar of the engineering profession. This helpful resource goes beyond a list of rules to help students and practitioners gain a better understanding of the creation, import, and use of standards.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardcore Programming for Mechanical Engineers is for intermediate programmers who want to write good applications that solve tough engineering problems – from scratch. This book will teach you how to solve engineering problems with Python. The “hardcore” approach means that you will learn to get the correct results by coding everything from scratch. Forget relying on third-party software – there are no shortcuts on the path to proficiency. Instead, using familiar concepts from linear algebra, geometry and physics, you’ll write your own libraries, draw your own primitives, and build your own applications. Author Angel Sola covers core programming techniques mechanical engineers need to know, with a focus on high-quality code and automated unit testing for error-free implementations. After basic primers on Python and using the command line, you’ll quickly develop a geometry toolbox, filling it with lines and shapes for diagramming problems. As your understanding grows chapter-by-chapter, you’ll create vector graphics and animations for dynamic simulations; you’ll code algorithms that can do complex numerical computations; and you’ll put all of this knowledge together to build a complete structural analysis application that solves a 2D truss problem – similar to the software projects conducted by real-world mechanical engineers. You'll learn: • How to use geometric primitives, like points and polygons, and implement matrices • Best practices for clean code, including unit testing, encapsulation, and expressive names • Processes for drawing images to the screen and creating animations inside Tkinter’s Canvas widget • How to write programs that read from a file, parse the data, and produce vector images • Numerical methods for solving large systems of linear equations, like the Cholesky decomposition algorithm

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many potential future engineers are intimidated by the mystery of engineering or overconfident about what they do not understand. A practical foundation of engineering knowledge can remove these barriers and launch aspiring engineers toward a rewarding future in engineering. This book introduces students to topics and applications of engineering to "engineering projects" they may experience in high school or first year college. Students read about engineering-related topics, discuss them with peers, and apply them to their projects. Through this project-based use of engineering principles students gain practical understanding of engineering principles, think like engineers, and begin to identify with the engineering professional. They have a credible exposure to engineering that can impact their studies and career paths. This book was created to prepare high school student teams for FIRST Tech Challenge robotics design and development. However, it is suitable for any students preparing for their first "engineering project" that requires design, fabrication, and testing of a mechanical solution.

Book excerpt: Control Theory is at the heart of information and communication technologies of complex systems. It can contribute to meeting the energy and environmental challenges we are facing. The textbook is organized in the way an engineer classically proceeds to solve a control problem, that is, elaboration of a mathematical model capturing the process behavior, analysis of this model and design of a control to achieve the desired objectives. It is divided into three Parts. The first part of the text addresses modeling aspects through state space and input-output representations. The notion of the internal state of a system (for example mechanical, thermal or electrical), as well as its description using a finite number of variables, is also emphasized. The second part is devoted to the stability analysis of an equilibrium point. The authors present classical tools for stability analysis, such as linearization techniques and Lyapunov functions. Central to Control Theory are the notions of feedback and of closed-loop, and the third part of the textbook describes the linear control synthesis in a continuous and discrete-time framework and also in a probabilistic context. Quadratic optimization and Kalman filtering are presented, as well as the polynomial representation, a convenient approach to reject perturbations on the system without making the control law more complex. Throughout the text, different examples are developed, both in the chapters and in the exercises.
