Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Industrial Drawing for Teachers in Common Schools This book is intended merely as a bird's eye View of the subject of industrial drawing as it is taught in the public schools. It aims to aid the teacher In gaining a little know ledge concerning each department into which the subject is divided. It does not claim to be even an attempt at cover ing the ground in anything like a comprehensive way, but it will give the teacher a starting-point, at least, from which to pursue the subject in all its branches. While doing Institute work the author has been asked numberless times to designate some book which would give an all-round glimpse of drawing, and while there are many books treating of any one of the topics considered in this book, they are treated so comprehensively that the teacher is discouraged at the thought of the mass of material she must read to get what she really wants; and in order to know even a little of each of the topics to be considered she must read as many books as there are divisions of the subject, and it is this that has led the author to give this little book to the public, in the hope that the teacher may find in it the points in drawing which it is necessary 'she should know. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanical Drawing for Secondary Schools This book analyzes mechanical drawing upon the basis of its elements, or natural divisions, such as Perspective Sketch ing, Orthographic Sketching, Pencil Mechanical Drawing, Ink ing, Tracing, and Reproducing. Each one of these divisions is treated separately in a chapter. Each chapter organizes the division of drawing which it represents. Hence in each chap ter there is presented a progressive series of problems in one of the natural divisions of the subject. The book contains six chapters and covers the first two years of mechanical drawing in Secondary Schools. The first four chapters are designed to occupy the time of a class for the first year of the two years' course. As there is a large element of exibility in the selection of problems, no one Individ ual is expected to solve all problems. The course may be easily extended over a period of more than two years, even to three or four years, depending upon the number of problems solved, whether a part or all of the chapters are included in the course, and the time devoted to the subject during each year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Mechanical Drawing for First and Second Year Classes in High Schools: Technical, Trade and Vocational Courses, and Evening Schools In planning this course in Applied Mechanical Drawing for pupils in the first and second years of high school, the main purpose has been to establish, wherever possible, a close relation between mechanical drawing, mathematics and shopwork, omitting the usual abstract problems which have no direct application to either subject. Almost without exception, each problem demands some mathematical calculation before the pupil can proceed with the drawing. Our experience leads us to believe that it is the better plan to present a minimum amount of explanatory text in connection with a completed drawing of a typical problem coming under each topic in the course. This enables the pupil to readily comprehend and easily understand the requirements of the ensuing problems which are given in text form. Wherever necessary these problems are accompanied by freehand perspective sketches suggesting the object which is to be represented by the mechanical drawing. The problems in design for shop drawings of wood-turning and simple pieces of furniture offer an excellent opportunity to relate constructive design in the drawing room to the practical work of the shop courses. In this connection it has been found more practical and productive of better results to present a number of suggestive outlines which aid the pupil to design and draw the particular piece that he plans to construct in the shops. Facility in design ought not to be considered the chief aim in working out these problems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address on Technical Education and Industrial Drawing It is a common thing to hear sensible men say, as it is also fre quently said in newspapers, that for the duties of real life the chil dren in the public schools are not so well prepared now as they were twenty years ago, or even fifty years ago, though they know more, and it costs more to teach them, - whilst a silver-tongued orator in Massachusetts has stated that under the old district school system, when a boy spent a few weeks in the school in winter, and worked the rest of the year on the farm, he -got a better because a more practical education than he can get in the country to-day. The trouble about such remarks as these is that they are true; and that it is possible for them to be true reflects great glory on the advancement of this country in civilization, and much discredit upon public educators and public education, thus lagging behind the progress and failing to supply the educational needs of the country.
