Elle s'appuie à la fois sur la connaissance des mécanismes physiques à l'échelle de la microstructure (chapitre 1), sur le formalisme de la thermodynamique des processus irréversibles (chapitre 2) et sur les techniques d'expérimentation et d'identification à l'échelle macroscopique (chapitre 3). Chaque type de comportement est étudié séparément dans les chapitres 4 à 8 où, après une description des aspects phénoménologiques, la formulation des lois de comportement est présentée sous une forme unifiée. L'identification des coefficients caractéristiques est donnée pour de nombreux métaux et alliages, polymères, composites, bétons et bois. Enfin, chacun de ces chapitres contient quelques éléments sur les méthodes de calculs de structures associées, principalement la méthode des éléments finis en élasticité, plasticité, viscoplasticité, et les méthodes de calculs d'amorçage et de propagation des fissures.
