This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume records the lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Methods in Computational Molecular Physics held in Bad Windsheim, Germany, from 22nd July until 2nd. August, 1991. This NATO Advanced Study Institute sought to bridge the quite considerable gap which exist between the presentation of molecular electronic structure theory found in contemporary monographs such as, for example, McWeeny's Methods 0/ Molecular Quantum Mechanics (Academic Press, London, 1989) or Wilson's Electron correlation in moleeules (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1984) and the realization of the sophisticated computational algorithms required for their practical application. It sought to underline the relation between the electronic structure problem and the study of nuc1ear motion. Software for performing molecular electronic structure calculations is now being applied in an increasingly wide range of fields in both the academic and the commercial sectors. Numerous applications are reported in areas as diverse as catalysis and interstellar chernistry, drug design and environmental studies, molecular biology and solid state physics. The range of applications continues to increase as scientists recognize the importance of molecular structure studies to their research activities. Recent years have seen a growing dependence of these applications on program packages, which are often not in the public domain and which may have a somewhat lirnited range of applicability dicta ted by the particular interests and prejudices of the program author.

Book excerpt: Atoms and Molecules describes the basic properties of atoms and molecules in terms of group theoretical methods in atomic and molecular physics. The book reviews mathematical concepts related to angular momentum properties, finite and continuous rotation groups, tensor operators, the Wigner-Eckart theorem, vector fields, and vector spherical harmonics. The text also explains quantum mechanics, including symmetry considerations, second quantization, density matrices, time-dependent, and time-independent approximation methods. The book explains atomic structure, particularly the Dirac equation in which its nonrelativistic approximation provides the basis for the derivation of the Hamiltonians for all important interactions, such as spin-orbit, external fields, hyperfine. Along with multielectron atoms, the text discusses multiplet theory, the Hartree-Fock formulation, as well as the electromagnetic radiation fields, their interactions with atoms in first and higher orders. The book explores molecules and complexes, including the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, molecular orbitals, the self-consistent field method, electronic states, vibrational and rotational states, molecular spectra, and the ligand field theory. The book can prove useful for graduate or advanced students and academicians in the field of general and applied physics.

Book excerpt: Methods of Experimental Physics, Volume 3, Part B: Molecular Physics, Second Edition presents the basic principles of electron spin resonance spectrometers and the electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This four-chapter text addresses the concept of thermal equilibrium and relaxation. Some of the topics covered in the book are the features of nuclear quadrupole resonance spectrometers; basic principles of radio-frequency spectrometers; computer methods in magnetic resonance; components of electron spin resonance spectrometer systems; and the resonance condition. Other chapters deal with the ionization potential of free radicals, the electron affinities by mass spectrometric methods, and the experimental methods for determining appearance potentials. The discussion then shifts to the theory of the incoherent neutron scattering and its application to molecular dynamics. The final chapter is devoted to the spectrometer operation and design. The book can provide useful information to chemists, physicists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Atomic and Molecular Processes focuses on radiative and collisional processes involving atoms or molecules, including photoionization, elastic and inelastic scattering of electrons, energy loss by slow electrons, excitation, ionization, detachment, charge transfer, elastic scattering, and chemical reactions. The selection first offers information on forbidden and allowed transitions, including forbidden transitions in diatomic molecular spectra; forbidden transitions in crystals; calculations of atomic line strengths; and measurements of atomic transition probabilities. The book also ponders on photoionization processes, photodetachment, and high temperature shock waves. The manuscript elaborates on electronic and ionic recombination, elastic scattering of electrons, and the motions of slow electrons in gases. The book also evaluates the theory of excitation and ionization by electron impact; measurement of collisional excitation and ionization cross sections; and spectral line broadening in plasmas. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in atomic and molecular processes.

This unique general chemistry textbook is tailored to more mathematically-oriented engineering or physics students. The authors emphasize the principles underlying chemistry rather than chemistry itself and the almost encyclopedic completeness appearing in a common textbook of general chemistry is sacrificed for an emphasis to these principles. Contained within 300 pages, it is suitable for a one-semester course for students who have a strong background in calculus. Over 200 problems with answers are provided so that the students can check their progress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph covers a broad spectrum of topics in the very broad field of gas phase molecular collision dynamics. The Introduction previews each of the four fol lowing topics and attempts to sew them together with a common thread. In addition, a brief review of quantum reactive scattering is given there along with some gen eral remarks which highlight the difficulties in doing quantum reactive scatter ing calculations. The chapters are all written by theoreticians who are, of course, experts in the subjects they have written about. Three chapters, the ones by Secrest, Schatz, and the one by Schinke and Bowman deal with non-reactive atom-molecule scattering. Col lectively, they describe nearly the full breadth of scattering methods in use to day, from fully quantum mechanical to semiclassical and quasiclassical. The chapter by Baer is the only one dealing with quantum reactive scattering with the additional complexity of the coupling of two potential energy surfaces. The one simplifying feature of the treatment is that the reaction is constrained to be collinear. Overall, this monograph is mainly a review of the recent advances in the field of molecular collision dynamics, with, however, a considerable amount of new material. It is hoped that workers and students in the field will find reading the mono graph both enlightening and enjoyable.
