Book excerpt: Measurements of the top-antitop quark pair production charge asymmetry in the dilepton channel, characterized by two high-pT leptons (electrons or muons), are presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb–1 from pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy √s = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Inclusive and differential measurements as a function of the invariant mass, transverse momentum, and longitudinal boost of the tt¯ system are performed both in the full phase space and in a fiducial phase space closely matching the detector acceptance. Two observables are studied: AllC based on the selected leptons and Att¯C based on the reconstructed tt¯ final state. As a result, the inclusive asymmetries are measured in the full phase space to be AllC=0.008±0.006 and Att¯C=0.021±0.016, which are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions of AllC=0.0064±0.0003 and Att¯C=0.0111±0.0004.

Book excerpt: Before any kind of new physics discovery could be made at the LHC, a precise understanding and measurement of the Standard Model of particle physics' processes was necessary. The book provides an introduction to top quark production in the context of the Standard Model and presents two such precise measurements of the production of top quark pairs in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV that were observed with the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC. The presented measurements focus on events with one charged lepton, missing transverse energy and jets. Using novel and advanced analysis techniques as well as a good understanding of the detector, they constitute the most precise measurements of the quantity at that time.

Book excerpt: "We present a measurement of charge asymmetry in the production of top and antitop quark pairs in proton-proton collisions, in a sample of 19:6 fb−1 of data collected by the CMS experiment at 8TeV center of mass energy in 2012. Selected events have a single isolated electron or muon, and at least four jets, at least one of which is likely due to a bottom quark. A template technique is employed to measure top-antitop asymmetry in two kinematic observables simultaneously, which allows attribution of contributions to the observed forward-central asymmetry from distinct Standard Model production mechanisms. An asymmetry Ayc = (0:15 ± 0:42)% is measured in the difference of absolute rapidities of top-antitop pairs, of which (0:00 ± 0:43)% is attributable to quark-antiquark initial states, and (0:18 ± 0:15)% is attributable to quark-gluon initial states. The first measurement of the transverse top quark charge asymmetry is also presented, with the result A[phi]c = (0:44 ± 0:50)%. Measurements of the inclusive asymmetry on selections with high and low top system mass and absolute rapidity are consistent with the main result. The results are compared to Standard Model predictions and measurements from the LHC and the Tevatron"--Page vii.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.

Book excerpt: Particle physics aims to give a coherent description of the nature and the behavior of elementary particles of matter. Particle accelerators (colliders) allow pushing back our know- ledge in this domain producing particles that cannot be observed by other means. This thesis work contributes to this research eld and focuses on the study of the top quark which is the latest brick of matter discovered and the heaviest known elementary particle. The property of the top quark studied here, the charge asymmetry of the top quark-antiquark pairs, has driven a lot of attention in 2011 because of measurements released by Tevatron experiments. These measurements showed deviations with the predictions made in the framework of the standard model of particle physics. New measurements of the charge asymmetry performed at the Tevatron (with the D0 detector) and at the LHC (with the ATLAS detector) are presented in this thesis.

Book excerpt: The difference in angular distributions between top quarks and antiquarks, commonly referred to as the charge asymmetry, is measured in pp collisions at the LHC with the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.09 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Top-quark pairs are selected in the final state with an electron or muon and four or more jets. At least one jet is identified as originating from b-quark hadronization. The charge asymmetry is measured in two variables, one based on the pseudorapidities ([eta]) of the top quarks and the other on their rapidities (y). The results A{sub C}{sup {eta}} = -0.017 ± 0.032(stat.){sub -0.036}{sup +0.025}(syst.) and A{sub C}{sup y} = -0.013 ± 0.028(stat.){sub -0.031}{sup +0.029}(syst.) are consistent within uncertainties with the standard-model predictions.

Book excerpt: 25 years after the top quark's discovery, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN produces proton-proton collision data on unprecedented scales at unprecedented energies - and has heralded an era of top-quark precision measurements. The production of a top-quark pair in association with a photon ($t bar{t} gamma$) gives access to the electromagnetic top-photon coupling, one of the fundamental properties of the top quark. Various extensions of the Standard Model predict modifications of the coupling strength or structure, and deviations from the Standard Model prediction of the $t bar{t} gamma$ pr...

Book excerpt: Abstract : In the Standard Model, the top quark plays a unique role as the heaviest known fundamental particle and as a quark that decays before it is able to hadronize. Top quarks are expected to decay to a W-boson and a b-quark nearly 100% of the time. If the branching ratio of t → Wb is lower than one, the distribution of the number of b-tagged jets will shift to lower multiplicities. A simultaneous likelihood fit to the number of b-tagged jets distributions in the lepton+jets and dilepton channels is performed on 4.7 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector to extract both the branching ratio and the tt ̄ cross section. The branching ratio of t → Wb, R, is measured to be 1.06±0.11, which is consistent with the Standard Model value. This is the first measurement of the t → Wb branching ratio performed with the ATLAS detector using both the lepton+jets and dilepton channels at the LHC. The tt ̄ cross section is measured to be [special characters omitted] pb, which agrees with NNLO predictions.

Book excerpt: Particle physics is a science about the symmetries of our world. The Standard Model is the fundamental theory of microworld. Particle dynamics in the Standard Model obeys strict symmetry laws with explicit experimental consequences. Priority problems of particle physics based on the Standard Model are more accurate theoretical predictions, experimental measurements and data analysis, proof of existence or non-existence of supersymmetry, top quark properties, Higgs boson, exotic quark states, and physics of neutrinos. In this collection of articles, many of these problems are discussed. We recommend this book for students, graduate students, and scientists working in the field of high energy physics.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, representing our current understanding of fundamental particles and their interactions, gives correct predictions with an astonishing precision for tens of thousands of measurements. Remaining open questions, like the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in our universe and observations hinting at the existence of dark matter point to new physics beyond the Standard Model. Observables in the top-quark sector are particularly well suited to probe the SM and many extensions thereof at the electroweak symmetry-breaking scale and beyond. At proton-proton colliders, top-antitop-quark pair production is symmetric at leading order in quantum chromodynamics under the exchange of the top and antitop quarks, while interferences at higher orders in quark-antiquark annihilation create an asymmetry. This charge asymmetry can provide sensitive probes for many models beyond the SM like massive colour-octet states, extra dimensions, flavour-violating gauge bosons or axigluons. In jet-associated top-quark pair production, this asymmetry arises already at leading order in quark-gluon interactions. Furthermore, the final states in jet-associated top-antitop events allow for the definition of a new observable, the energy asymmetry, reflecting the different probability of top and antitop quarks to have the higher energy. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN collected 139 fb^-1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV during Run 2 in the data-taking period 2015-2018, providing the possibility to study less frequent processes like jet-associated top-quark pair production as well as essentially all interactions of the top quark with high statistical precision. This thesis presents the first measurement of the energy asymmetry, performed in the semi-leptonic decay channel in jet-associated top-quark pair events in the so called boosted topology, requiring the hadronically decaying top quark to have a transverse momentum above 350 GeV, and corrected for detector effects with the Fully Bayesian Unfolding (FBU) method. The measured asymmetry is found to be in agreement with the SM prediction at next-to-leading order accuracy in all three bins of the jet-scattering angle. In the central region, where the energy asymmetry is expected to be the highest, the energy asymmetry is measured to be -0.043+-0.020, in agreement with the SM prediction of -0.037+- 0.003. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) represents a model-independent framework for new physics interpretations. Within the SMEFT framework, the energy asymmetry is especially sensitive to the chiral and colour structure of four-quark operators. The sensitivity of the energy asymmetry is presented in the bounds on Wilson coefficients obtained from one and two-dimensional fits of the predicted to the measured asymmetry. The sensitivity of the energy asymmetry is found to be comparable to that of other observables in the top-quark sector as well as to resolve blind directions in current LHC fits and will thus provide a valuable new input for global SMEFT fits.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first experimental calibration of the top-quark Monte-Carlo mass. It also provides the top-quark mass-independent and most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurement to date. The most precise measurements of the top-quark mass obtain the top-quark mass parameter (Monte-Carlo mass) used in simulations, which are partially based on heuristic models. Its interpretation in terms of mass parameters used in theoretical calculations, e.g. a running or a pole mass, has been a long-standing open problem with far-reaching implications beyond particle physics, even affecting conclusions on the stability of the vacuum state of our universe. In this thesis, this problem is solved experimentally in three steps using data obtained with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. The most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurements to date are performed. The Monte-Carlo mass is determined and a new method for extracting the top-quark mass from theoretical calculations is presented. Lastly, the top-quark production cross-sections are obtained – for the first time – without residual dependence on the top-quark mass, are interpreted using theoretical calculations to determine the top-quark running- and pole mass with unprecedented precision, and are fully consistently compared with the simultaneously obtained top-quark Monte-Carlo mass.

Book excerpt: During Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, the ATLAS experiment recorded proton-proton collision events at 13 TeV, the highest energy ever achieved in a collider. Analysis of this dataset has provided new opportunities for precision measurements of the Higgs boson, including its interaction with the top quark. The Higgs-top coupling can be directly probed through the production of a Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop quark pair (ttH). The Higgs to diphoton decay channel is among the most sensitive for ttH measurements due to the excellent diphoton mass resolution of the ATLAS detector and the clean signature of this decay. Event selection criteria were developed using novel Machine Learning techniques to target ttH events, yielding a precise measurement of the ttH cross section in the diphoton channel and a 6.3 $\sigma$ observation of the ttH process in combination with other decay channels, as well as stringent limits on CP violation in the Higgs-top coupling.
