Events are selected in final states with two charged leptons and at least two jets and in final states with one charged lepton and at least four jets. Four different observables sensitive to different properties of the top quark pair production mechanism are used to extract the correlation between the top and antitop quark spins. Some of these observables are measured for the first time. The measurements are in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction at next-to-leading-order accuracy.

We apply a matrix element technique to dilepton and single-lepton+jets final states in data accumulated with the D0 detector that correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.7 fb$^{-1}$. The measured value of the correlation coefficient in the off-diagonal basis, $O_{off} = 0.89 \pm 0.22$ (stat + syst), is in agreement with the standard model prediction, and represents evidence for a top-antitop quark spin correlation difference from zero at a level of 4.2 standard deviations.

Book excerpt: We present a measurement of spin correlation in t¯t production using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The correlation between the top and antitop quark spins is extracted from dilepton t¯t events by using the difference in the azimuthal angle between the two charged leptons in the laboratory frame. In the helicity basis the measured degree of correlation corresponds to Ahelicity = 0.38±0.04, in agreement with the standard model prediction. A search is performed for pair production of top squarks with masses close to the top quark mass decaying to predominantly right-handed top quarks and a light neutralino, the lightest supersymmetric particle. Lastly, top squarks with masses between the top quark mass and 191 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

The first measurement of top quark spin correlations at the LHC in the lepton+jets decay channel is presented. As the heaviest elementary particle, the top quark plays an essential role in the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. In the case of top quarks being produced in pairs at hadron colliders, the Standard Model predicts their spins to be correlated. The degree of correlation depends on both the production mechanism and properties of the top quark. Any deviation from the Standard Model prediction can be an indicator for new physics phenomena. The thesis employs an advanced top quark reconstruction algorithm including dedicated identification of the up- and down-type quarks from the W boson decay.

The data correspond to integrated luminosities of $5 fb^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 20 $fb^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV collected with the ATLAS and CMS detectors. The top quark polarization is measured in both single top quark production in the t-channel and $t\bar{t}$ pair-production, from the angular distributions of charged leptons in the rest frame of their parent top quark. The spin correlations are measured in $t\bar{t}$ events using various angular distributions of the decay products. The measurements are made using both template fitting methods and by unfolding the distributions to the parton-level, where differential measurements with respect to the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the $t\bar{t}$ system are also made. The spin correlation measurements are used to search for new physics in the form of a light top squark or an anomalous top quark chromo-magnetic dipole moment. All measurements are found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model.

Book excerpt: The associated production of a W boson and a single charm quark (W+c) is the only process in proton-proton collisions that directly probes the strange quark content of the proton. In this thesis, W+charm production is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV, as recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The analysis focuses on the identification of W bosons in their leptonic decay to a muon and a neutrino and charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction of D*-Mesons. The measured cross sections of W+c production are used, in combination with other relevant CMS results and the most precise HERA DIS data, in a QCD analysis to determine the strange quark content of the proton. The resulting strange quark distribution and suppression, with respect to the other light sea quarks, are in good agreement with those obtained in neutrino scattering experiments and extend their kinematic reach.

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and two or more jets, where at least one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. The spin correlations and polarization are measured from the angular distributions of the two selected leptons, both inclusively and differentially, with respect to the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the tt¯ system. Moreover, the measurements are unfolded to the parton level and found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model. A search for new physics in the form of anomalous top quark chromo moments is performed. Lastly, no evidence of new physics is observed, and exclusion limits on the real part of the chromo-magnetic dipole moment and the imaginary part of the chromo-electric dipole moment are evaluated.

Book excerpt: The field of particle physics involves not only searches for new particles and measurements of their interactions, but also the design and construction of advanced particle detectors.This thesis presents the measurement of the production cross section of four top quarks in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using 137 fb−1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. This analysis considers events in the final state of a same-sign pair of leptons, notable for being a final state with relatively few Standard Model background events. A boosted decision tree is utilized to discriminate four top quark events from background events. The four top quark production cross section is measured to be 12.6+5.8−5.2 fb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. This measurement is used to constrain the top quark's Yukawa coupling as well as various theories beyond the Standard Model.This thesis also describes the construction and testing of silicon pixel detector modules used in the Phase I upgrade of the CMS pixel detector, and optimization of electron reconstruction methods using the new detector. The role of automated module assembly and quality assurance will be discussed, as well as work towards the construction of a high precision silicon strip detector based telescope.
