This thesis describes several experiments that show how these underlying symmetries combine with electron-electron interactions to produce novel and tunable correlated electronic phases of matter.

Book excerpt: In certain electronic systems, strong Coulomb interactions between electrons can favor novel electronic phases that are difficult to anticipate theoretically. Accessing fundamental quantities such as the density of states in these platforms is crucial to their analysis. In this thesis, I explore the application of two measurement techniques towards this goal: capacitance measurements that probe the thermodynamic ground state of an electronic system and planar tunneling measurements that access its quasiparticle excitation spectrum. Both techniques were applied to van der Waals materials, a class of crystals composed of layered atomic sheets with weak interplane bonding which permits the isolation of single and few-layer sheets that can be manually assembled into heterostructures. Capacitance measurements were performed on a material system commonly known as magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). When two monolayers of graphene, a single sheet of graphite, are stacked on top of one another with a relative twist between their crystal axes, the resultant band structure is substantially modified from the cases of both monolayer graphene and Bernal-stacked (non-twisted) bilayer graphene. At certain magic angles, the low energy bands become extremely flat, quenching the electronic kinetic energy and allowing strong electron-electron interactions to become relevant. Exotic insulating and superconducting phases have been observed using conventional transport measurements. By accessing the thermodynamic density of states of MATBG, we estimate its low energy bandwidth, Fermi velocity, and interaction-driven energy gaps. Time-domain planar tunneling was performed on a heterostructure that consisted of monolayer graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (serving as the dielectric and tunnel barrier) sandwiched between a graphite tunneling probe and metal gate. Tunneling currents were induced by applying a sudden voltage pulse across the full parallel plate structure. The lack of in-plane charge motion allowed access to the tunneling density of states even when the heterostructure was electrically insulating in the quantum Hall regime. These measurements represent the first application of time-domain planar tunneling to the van der Waals class of materials, an important step in extending the technique to new material platforms.

Book excerpt: The focus of this thesis is the dynamical symmetry breaking in monolayer and bilayer graphene in a magnetic field and the edge excitations in these systems. Due to the spin and valley degrees of freedom, the Coulomb interaction in graphene can lead to various brokensymmetry quantum Hall phases. The transport properties of each phase are a ected by the low-energy edge excitations, and understanding the edge state properties can be crucial for identifying the true nature of the ground state. We study edge states in biased bilayer graphene in a magnetic field within the four-band continuum model. The analysis is done for the semi-infinite graphene plane and for the graphene ribbon of a finite width, in the cases of zigzag and armchair edges. Exact dispersion equations for the edge states and analytic expressions for their wave functions are written in terms of the parabolic cylinder functions. The spectrum of edge states for each type of the boundary conditions is found by numerically solving the corresponding dispersion equations. The low-energy modes localized at zigzag edges are explored in detail. In the case of monolayer graphene, we study edge excitations of the = 0 quantum Hall state within the mean-field theory with di erent symmetry breaking terms. The analytical expressions for the continuum (Dirac) model wave functions are obtained for the charge density wave, Kekulé distortion, ferromagnetic and (canted) antiferromagnetic phases. The dispersion equations for each phase and boundary type (zigzag and armchair) are derived, numerically solved and compared to the results of the corresponding e ective tight-binding model. The e ect of the next-to-nearest neighbor hopping parameter on the edge state spectrum is studied and revealed to be essential. The criteria for the existence of gapless edge states are established for each phase and edge type. Finally, we study di erent broken-symmetry quantum Hall phases in bilayer graphene with even filling factors. The gap equation is solved in the lowest Landau level approximation using the long-range screened Coulomb potential as well as the general form of the short-range interaction terms. Phase transitions driven by changing the external electric field and tilting the magnetic field are described.

In twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene, we find extraordinary level of control and tunability because of the low symmetry. With perpendicular electric field, the system can alternate among correlated metallic and insulating states, as well as topological magnetic states. The magnetization direction can be switched purely with electrostatic doping at zero magnetic field.

C2DEGs are a very good description of the low-energy electronic properties of single layer and multilayer graphene systems. The low-energy properties of single layer and multilayer graphene are described by Chiral Hamiltoninans whose band eigenstates have definite chirality. In this thesis we focus on the effect of electron-electron interactions on two of these systems: monolayer and bilayer graphene. In the first half of this thesis we use the massless Dirac Fermion model and random-phase-approximation to study the effect of interactions in graphene sheets. The interplay of graphene's single particle chiral eigenstates along with electron-electron interactions lead to a peculiar supression of spin susceptibility and compressibility, and also to an unusual velocity renormalization. We also report on a theoretical study of the influence of electron-electron interactions on ARPES spectra in graphene. We find that level repulsion between quasiparticle and plasmaron resonances gives rise to a gap-like feature near the Dirac point. In the second half we anticipate interaction driven integer quantum Hall effects in bilayer graphene because of the near-degeneracy of the eight Landau levels which appear near the neutral system Fermi level. We predict that an intra-Landau-level cyclotron resonance signal will appear at some odd-integer filling factors, accompanied by collective modes which are nearly gapless and have approximate q[superscrit 3/2] dispersion. We speculate on the possibility of unusual localization physics associated with these modes.
