Book excerpt: Methods of experimentally determining the transport properties of high temperature gases have been developed and measurements of viscosity, thermal conducitvity, and diffusion coefficients obtained. The heat transfer rate through laminar boundary layers, the absorption of sound, and a schlieren method have been investigated for the determination of transport properties. Heat transfer measurements on the side wall of the shock tube have been used to obtain viscosities of argon, oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide up to 4000 K. The boundary layer equations were solved for side wall boundary layers in the shock tube in oxygen to assess the relative importance of viscosity and thermal conductivity in heat transfer to the side wall. Thermal conductivities were deduced from end wall heat transfer measurements in carbon dioxide up to 2000 K and oxygen up to 4000 K. End wall heat transfer measurements in nitrogen and argon have been compared to theory with excellent agreement. Various methods for measuring ultrasonic absorption are discussed. The viscosity of argon at temperatures up to 8000 K were determined with the ultrasonic method. Diffusion coefficient in 50-50 He-Ar mixtures have also been obtained from the ultrasonic measurements at room temperature with excellent agreement with other investigators. The theory of a schlieren method for the measurement of thermal conductivity using the end wall boundary layer in the shock tube is discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Diffusion coefficients of binary mixtures of dilute gases and comprehensively compiled, critically evaluated, and correlated by new semi-empirical expressions. There are seventy-four systems for which the data are sufficiently extensive, consistent and accurate to allow diffusion coefficients to be recommended with confidence. Deviation plots are given for most of these systems. Almost every gaseous diffusion coefficient which was experimentally determined and reported prior to 1970 can be obtained from the annotated bibliography and table of gas pairs. A detailed analysis of experimental methods is given, and intercomparison of their results helps establish reliability limits for the data, which depend strongly on temperature. Direct measurements are supplemented by calculations based on knowledge of intermolecular forces derived from independent sources-molecular beam scattering for high temperatures, and London dispersion constants for low temperatures. In addition, diffusion coefficients for several mixtures are obtained from experimental data on mixture viscosities and thermal diffusion factors. Combination of all these results gives diffusion coefficients over a very extensive temperature range from very low temperatures to 10,000 K. All data are corrected for composition dependence and for quantum effects. New semi-empirical equations are derived for making such corrections easily. (Author).

Among the comprehensively discussed aspects of the area it includes in particular: new multinuclear experiments that deliver spectral parameters of isolated molecules and provide the most accurate values of nuclear magnetic shielding, isotropic spin–spin coupling and relaxation times; advanced, precise and correct theoretical descriptions of spectral parameters of molecules as well as the application of gas-phase NMR measurements to chemical analysis and medicine. The progress of research in these fields is enormous and has rapidly changed our knowledge and understanding of molecular parameters in NMR spectroscopy. For example, accurate studies of the shielding for isolated molecules allow the exact determination of nuclear magnetic dipole moments, the calculated values of spectral parameters can be verified by precise gas-phase NMR measurements, and the application of hyperpolarized noble gases provides excellent MRI pictures of lungs. Aimed at graduates and researchers in spectroscopy, analytical chemistry and those researching the applications of NMR in medicine, this book presents the connections between sophisticated experiments, the theory of magnetic parameters and the exploration of new methods in practice.

Book excerpt: The study of the vaporization kinetics of CaZrO3 and BaZrO3 have been carried out in the temperature range 1600-2000 C using a vacuum microbalance technique. Oxygen tracer diffusion coefficients in CaZrO3, BaZrO3 and SrZrO3 have also been measured using the gas exchange technique. Tracer concentration profiles were determined using nuclear reaction analysis. Both CaZrO3 and BaZrO3 have a relatively high rate of evaporation at high temperatures. However, dry- pressed CaZrO3 shows a smaller rate of evaporation than hot-pressed but impure BaZrO3. Results of the diffusion experiments indicate that CaZrO3 exhibits the largest penetration with BaZrO3 showing the smallest. Apparent oxygen tracer diffusion coefficients were measured for CaZrO3 and SrZrO3 at 1000C. Over the temperature range of 900-1100C, the apparent oxygen tracer diffusion coefficient in BaZrO3 is described by D=5.0 x 10-3 sq.cm/sec exp ( -247 KJ/mole/RT). Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.
