Book excerpt: Using the entire sample of 467 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, we perform a 'GLW' analysis of B{sup ±} 2!D{sup ±} decays, using decay modes in which the neutral D meson decays to either CP-eigenstates or non-CP-eigenstates. We measure the partial decay rate charge asymmetries for CP-even and CP-odd D final states to be A{sub CP+} = 0.25 ± 0.06 ± 0.02 and A{sub CP-} = -0.09 ± 0.07 ± 0.02, respectively, where the first error is the statistical and the second is the systematic uncertainty. The parameter A{sub CP+} is different from zero with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations, constituting evidence for direct CP violation. We also measure the ratios of the charged-averaged B partial decay rates in CP and non-CP decays, R{sub CP+} = 1.18 ± 0.09 ± 0.05 and R{sub CP-} = 1.07 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.04. We infer frequentist confidence intervals for the angle [gamma] of the (db) unitarity triangle, for the strong phase difference [delta]{sub B}, and for the amplitude ratio r{sub B}, which are related to the B− 2!D− decay amplitude by r{sub B}e{sup i({delta}{sub b-[gamma]})} = A(B− 2!{bar D}°K−)/A(B− 2!D°K°−). Including statistical and systematic uncertainties, they obtain 0.24

The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

The first meaningful measurements of [alpha] and [gamma] are explained, together with their significance for constraining both the SM and new physics in B-{bar B} mixing. I also discuss implications of recent developments in the theory of nonleptonic decays for B → [pi]K rates and CP asymmetries, and for the polarization in charmless B decays to two vector mesons.

Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics. We measure? = (68 ± 14 ± 4 ± 3){sup o} (modulo 180{sup o}), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with? = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.

The decays of B+ mesons are reconstructed in approximately 2.8 fb-1 of data recorded by D0 detector in 2002-2007 during Run II of Fermilab Tevatron collider. Using the unbinned likelihood fit, a signal of 40,222 ± 242 of B+ → J/?K+ and 1,578 ± 119 of B+ → J/??+ events is obtained. The corresponding direct CP violation asymmetries are measured to be ACP(B+ → J/?(1S)K+) = +0.0077 ± 0.0061(stat.) ± 0.0027(syst.), and ACP(B+ → J/?(1S)?+) = - 0.089 ± 0.081(stat.) ± 0.028(syst.). The result on ACP (B+ → J/?(1S)K+) is consistent with the 2007 world average and is the most precise measurement of this asymmetry, with uncertainty approaching the level of the Standard Model prediction. The result on ACP (B+ → J/?(1S)?+) constitutes the first measurement of this asymmetry at the hadron collider, with uncertainty at the level of the 2007 world average. The measurement presented in this thesis has become possible due to the sophisticated online and offline tracking/vertexing implemented at D0, and the regular reversal of the polarities of the D0 detector magnets.

Using 227 million [Upsilon](4S) --> B{bar B} decays collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy Ee− collider at SLAC, the authors observe a total signal yield of n(K-pi+) + n(K+pi−) = 1606 ± 51 decays and measure the asymmetry [n(K−pi+)-n(K+pi−)]/[n(K−pi+)+n(K+pi−)] = 0.133 ± 0.030(stat) ± 0.009(syst). This measurement establishes direct CP violation in the B° meson system at the level of 4.2 standard deviations.

Book excerpt: The BABAR experiment at SLAC provides an opportunity for measurement of CP violation in B decays. A measurement of time-dependent CP violating asymmetries using exclusive B meson decays where the b quark decays to c{bar c}d (including B° 2!D*D*− and B° 2!D*{sup ±}D{sup {-+}} decays) is presented here. This is the first measurement of CP violation in a mode sensitive to the Unitarity Triangle parameter sin2[beta] outside of decays containing charmonium. It provides a comparison to measurements of sin2[beta] using b 2!c{bar c}s, and permits an observation into potential new physics sources of CP violation, such as supersymmetry, via differences between these measurements and those of B° 2!J/[psi] K{sub S}° as statistics of reconstructed neutral B decays to D{sup (*)+} D{sup (*)-} increase. The measured value of the time-dependent CP violating asymmetries are: S = 0.38 ± 0.88(stat) ± 0.12(syst) and C = -0.30 ± 0.50(stat) ± 0.13(syst) for B° 2!D*− D; S = -0.43 ± 1.41(stat) ± 0.23(syst) and C = 0.53 ± 0.74(stat) ± 0.15(syst) for B° 2!D*+ D−; and S = -0.05 ± 0.45(stat) ± 0.05(syst) and C = 0.12 ± 0.30(stat) {+-} 0.05(syst) for B° 2!D*− D+; where S corresponds to CP violation in the interference of mixing and decay and C corresponds to CP violation in decay.
