Book excerpt: In this thesis we present CP violation studies in the B mesons system, and in particular measurements of the angle gamma of the Unitary Triangle, using data collected by the Babar experiment. The angle gamma is the relative weak phase between the Vub and Vcb elements of the CKM matrix. A crucial parameter, which drives the sensitivity to gamma, is the ratio r between b to u and b to c transition amplitudes. The experimental work consists of two analyses of the B0 to D0 K*0 decays. The first analysis, using an ADS method, allow for a determination of the ratio r for this channel. The large value for the parameter r (of the order of 0,25) makes the use of this channel interesting for measurements of gamma. The second analysis, using a Dalitz method, allow for a determination of r and gamma. These results represent the first contraints on gamma and r obtained from neutral B decays.

The unitarity of this matrix can be represented in a complex plane as a triangle (called Unitarity Triangle). The measurement of the parameters of the triangle is a powerful test of the Standard Model description of the CP violation. This thesis tries to measure the weak phase 2beta+ gamma through the B0 -> D+ K0 Pi- decays. Respect to the two body decays B0 -> D(*)+ Pi- and B0 -> D+ Rho- presently used for the measurement of the same weak phase, the B0 -> D+ K0 Pi- decays should show up a larger CP asymmetry and does not rely on any theoretical assumption. After a review of all the methods for the measurement of 2beta+gamma, the thesis presents the results of a feasibility study of the measurement with the B0 -> D+ K0 Pi- decays . In a second part, the analysis performed on 316 fb-1 of data collected by the BaBar detector at the B-factory PEP2 is presented, from the selection of the events to the time-dependent Dalitz fit technique used in order to extract the weak phase 2beta+gamma as well as the amplitudes and phases of the intermediate resonances contributing to the decay. The result of the analysis gives the following estimation: 2beta+gamma = 89 +/- 53(stat) +23-14(syst) degrees with an irreducible ambiguity of 180 degrees.

The phenomenon of CP violation allows one to distinguish between matter and antimatter, and, as such, is one of the essential ingredients needed to explain the apparent abundance of matter over antimatter in the universe. The Standard Model describes the observed elementary particles in terms of three generations of quarks and leptons, as well as the weak, electromagnetic, and strong interactions between them. In the Standard Model, CP violation is incorporated in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which describes the weak interactions between the quarks. The weak interactions between quarks are described by coupling constants that are functions of three real parameters and one irreducible complex phase. The magnitude of all CP violating effects in the Standard Model is related to this complex phase. The measurement of the CP violating phase of the CKM matrix is an important part of the present scientific program in particle physics. Violation of the CP symmetry manifests itself as a non-zero area of the Unitarity Triangle. The Unitarity Triangle needs to be overconstrained by experimental measurements in order to demonstrate that the CKM mechanism is the correct explanation of this phenomenon. No stringent measurement of the CKM-angle [gamma] is yet available.

The data have been collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in California. Theoretical predictions of the branching fraction of the B0 → D*- a0+ decays show large QCD model dependent uncertainties. Non-factorizing terms, in the naive factorization model, that can be calculated by QCD factorizing models have a large impact on the branching fraction of these decay modes. The predictions of the branching fractions are of the order of 10-6. The measurement of the branching fraction gives more insight into the theoretical models. In general a better understanding of QCD models will be necessary to conduct weak interaction physics at the next level. The presence of CP violation in electroweak interactions allows the differentiation between matter and antimatter in the laws of physics. In the Standard Model, CP violation is incorporated in the CKM matrix that describes the weak interaction between quarks. Relations amongst the CKM matrix elements are used to present the two relevant parameters as the apex of a triangle (Unitarity Triangle) in a complex plane. The over-constraining of the CKM triangle by experimental measurements is an important test of the Standard Model. At this moment no stringent direct measurements of the CKM angle [gamma], one of the interior angles of the Unitarity Triangle, are available. The measurement of the angle [gamma] can be performed using the decays of neutral B mesons. The B0 → D*- a0+ decay is sensitive to the angle [gamma] and, in comparison to the current decays that are being employed, could significantly enhance the measurement of this angle. However, the low expected branching fraction for the B0 → D*- a0+ decay channels could severely impact the measurement. A prerequisite of the measurement of the CKM angle is the observation of the B0 → D*- a0+ decay on which this thesis reports. The BABAR experiment consists of the BABAR detector and the PEP-II e+e- collider. The design of the experiment has been optimized for the study of CP violation in the decays of neutral B mesons but is also highly suitable for the search for rare B decays such as the B0 → D*- a0+ decay. The PEP-II collider operates at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance and is a clean source of B$\bar{B}$ meson pairs.

Book excerpt: In the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, the phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark-mixing matrix [1, 2] is the only source of CP violation in the quark sector. Due to the interference between mixing and decay, this phase can be observed in measurements of time-dependent CP asymmetries of B° mesons. In the SM, CP asymmetries in b 2!s{bar s}s decays, such as B° 2!KK−K°, are expected to be nearly equal to those observed in tree-dominated b 2!{bar c}s decays [3]. However, because in the SM the former are dominated by loop amplitudes, new particles in those loops potentially introduce new physics at the same order as the SM process. Within the SM, deviations from the expected CP asymmetries in B° 2!KK−K° decays depend on the Dalitz plot position, but are expected to be small and positive [4]. In particular, for the decay B° 2![phi]K° they are expected to be less than 4%. BABAR extracts the time-dependent CP-violation parameters by taking into account different amplitudes and phases across the B° and {bar B}° Dalitz plots, while Belle measures it separately for B° 2![phi]K° and the rest of K+K−K° events, neglecting interference between intermediate states. The analyses presented here are based on 347 (535) million B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR (Belle) detector at the SLAC PEP-II (KEKB) e+e− asymmetric-energy collider. Data are collected on the [Upsilon](4S) resonance, while a fraction of about 10% is collected at approximately 40 MeV below the [Upsilon](4S) resonance, and it is used to study the background arising from e+e− 2!q{bar q} (q = u, d, s, c) continuum events. The BABAR and Belle detectors are described in detail elsewhere [5].
