Book excerpt: Experiments over the last decade at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory have yielded evidence for the formation of the new state of matter called the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Normally, quarks (and their associated gluons) are found only in colorless doublets (mesons) or triplets (baryons), but when raised above the cross-over threshold at a temperature of ∼ 175 MeV, a strongly-coupled partonic medium of asymptotically free quarks and gluons is expected to form. The focus of heavy-ion physics at both the RHIC and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments has been to study physical processes that allow for a better grasp of the properties of this medium. Because of the large center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair ([squareroot]s(NN)) of 2.76 TeV in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC and substantial delivered integrated luminosities, the study of new processes in nucleus-nucleus collisions has become possible. One of those processes is Z-boson production, which due to it not interacting strongly, being produced in hard collisions and having a decay channel that does not interact with the QGP, can act as a control in understanding the cold nuclear matter effects present in heavy-ion collisions. This dissertation presents the measurement of the production of Z bosons in the dimuon and dielectron decay channels in Pb+Pb and p+p collisions at [squareroot]s(NN) of 2.76 TeV obtained by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis is based on the data sample collected during the Pb+Pb run in 2011, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 150 [mu]b−1 and on the p+p data sample collected in 2013, at the same center-of-mass energy, with an integrated luminosity of 5.4 pb−1. The ratio of Pb+Pb to p+p yields, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions, R(AA), is expected to be equal to unity if there are no nuclear effects modifying the production of the Z boson in the Pb+Pb collisions. The R(AA) for centrality-integrated Z-boson production is found to be 1.06 ± 0.05 (stat) ± 0.08 (syst) in the dimuon channel and 1.02 ± 0.08 (stat) ± 0.15 (syst) in the dielectron channel, and shows no nuclear modification across the rapidity, transverse momentum and centrality bins measured. This result demonstrates that the binary-collision scaling is seen to hold in the kinematic region studied, which is expected for a colorless probe that is unaffected by a deconfined QGP. It also opens avenues to study processes that are strongly modified by the QGP, by using Z production as a control.

Book excerpt: The unprecedented center of mass energy available at the LHC offers unique opportunities for studying the properties of the strongly-interacting QCD matter created in PbPb collisions. This QCD matter is created at extreme temperatures, intermediate momentum fractions and large Q values. With its high precision, large acceptance for tracking, and a trigger scheme that allows analysis of each minimum-bias PbPb events, CMS is especially suited to measure high-pT̳ dimuons, even in the high multiplicity environment of heavy-ion collisions. Electroweak probes are accessible for the first time in heavy-ion collisions. The Z0 boson is cleanly reconstructed in the dimuon channel with the CMS detector. Precise measurements of Z0 production in heavy-ion collisions can help to constrain the nuclear parton distribution functions (PDF) as well as serve as a standard candle of the initial state in PbPb collisions at the LHC energies. From the PbPb run at [square root]sN̳N̳ = 2.76 TeV, the inclusive and differential measurements of the Z0 boson yield in the muon decay channel are presented. Making use of the pp reference run at the same center-of-mass energy, the nuclear modification factor, RA̳A̳, is calculated. The value of the RA̳A̳ = 1.03 ± 25(stat)[+4.0,-5.0](syst) is found to be consistent with the expectation that no modification is observed with respect to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions.

This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark is studied with the proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV provided by the LHC at the CMS detector at CERN (Geneva). At the LHC, these particles are produced simultaneously via the associate production of the Higgs boson with one top quark (tH process) or two top quarks (ttH process). Compared to many other possible outcomes of the proton-proton interactions, these processes are very rare, as the top quark and the Higgs boson are the heaviest elementary particles known. Hence, identifying them constitutes a significant experimental challenge. A high particle selection efficiency in the CMS detector is therefore crucial. At the core of this selection stands the Level-1 (L1) trigger system, a system that filters collision events to retain only those with potential interest for physics analysis. The selection of hadronically decaying τ leptons, expected from the Higgs boson decays, is especially demanding due to the large background arising from the QCD interactions. The first part of this thesis presents the optimization of the L1 τ algorithm in Run 2 (2016-2018) and Run 3 (2022-2024) of the LHC. It includes the development of a novel trigger concept for the High-Luminosity LHC, foreseen to start in 2027 and to deliver 5 times the current instantaneous luminosity. To this end, sophisticated algorithms based on machine learning approaches are used, facilitated by the increasingly modern technology and powerful computation of the trigger system. The second part of the work presents the search of the tH and ttH processes with the subsequent decays of the Higgs boson to pairs of τ lepton, W bosons or Z bosons, making use of the data recorded during Run 2. The presence of multiple particles in the final state, along with the low cross section of the processes, makes the search an ideal use case for multivariant discriminants that enhance the selectivity of the signals and reject the overwhelming background contributions. The discriminants presented are built using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, able to capture the correlations amongst the processes involved, as well as the so-called Matrix Element Method (MEM), which combines the theoretical description of the processes with the detector resolution effects. The level of sophistication of the methods used, along with the unprecedented amount of collision data analyzed, result in the most stringent measurements of the tH and ttH cross sections up to date.

Book excerpt: Processes involving W and Z bosons decaying leptonically are among the best understood at hadron colliders. This and their copious production allow for a wide range of studies. The study of hard-diffractive event observables, such as a large rapidity gap in W or Z boson events, is strongly influenced by the underlying multiparton interactions. At present, the description of these processes relies largely on the generator specific tuning of data. Therefore, the measurement and extensive study of such events can be used in the understanding and implementation of detailed simulations of diffraction. Moreover, the measurements of single pomeron exchange are sensitive to the structure of the pomeron and the dynamics of diffraction. A detailed overview towards the observation of a diffractive signal with improvements of Monte Carlo simulations containing multiparton interactions is given. Finally, a precise measurement of the W and Z transverse momenta is presented. The distributions can potentially be used to constrain the gluon distribution function to high precision at LHC energies.

Book excerpt: The inclusive cross section of vector boson production in proton-proton collisions is one of the key measurements for constraining the Standard Model and an important part of the physics program at the LHC. Measurement of the inclusive cross section requires calculating the detector acceptance of decay products. The acceptance of the CMS detector of leptonic decays of W and Z bosons produced in pp colisions at [square root of]s = 5 TeV is calculated using Monte Carlo event simulation. Statistical and systematic uncertainties on the acceptance measurement from PDF and a, uncertainty and higher-order correction are reported. The use of the calculated acceptance in combination with measurements of detector efficiency, luminosity, and particle counting to determine the inclusive cross section is outlined. A total integrated luminosity of 331.64 pb-1 from 2015 and 2017 CMS data at [square root of]s = 5 TeV is available for the calculation of the inclusive cross section.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, measurements of inclusive and differential Z boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at [square root of] s =13 TeV with the CMS detector at Large Hadron Collider are performed with the di-muon channel. The measured total inclusive cross section times branching ratio is or(pp - ZX) x [beta](Z --> [mu][mu]) = 1870 ± 2(stat) ± 35(syst) ± 51(lumi) pb for the di-muon invariant mass in the range of 60 to 120 GeV, which is in good agreement with the next-to-next-to leading order QCD predictions. The spectra of Z boson transverse momentum, ... variable, rapidity, and the muon transverse momentum are also measured and compared with theoretical predictions. The large production cross section of Z boson and good experimental accessibility of final-state muons permit a real-time monitoring of luminosities using the counts of reconstructed Z --> [mu][mu] events. Preliminary results of counting of Z bosons as a luminometer are shown using the entire 2018 data-taking period. A search for beyond Standard Model neutral Higgs bosons decaying to two muons is also presented. No significant excess is observed. A 95% confidence level upper limit is set on ... The exclusion contour is also determined on the parameter phase space in the context of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Mode representative benchmark scenarios.

Book excerpt: A search for new physics in events with a leptonically decaying Z boson and a large transverse momentum imbalance in proton-proton collisions collected at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV in 2016 with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The results of this search are interpreted in terms of a simplified model of dark matter production via spin-0 or spin-1 mediators, a scenario with a standard-model-like Higgs boson produced in association with the Z boson and decaying invisibly, a model of unparticle production, and a model with large extra spatial dimensions. No significant deviations from the background expectations are found, and limits are set on relevant model parameters, significantly extending the results previously achieved in this channel.

The results are placed into an appropriate theoretical and historical context. The work pays special attention to the rising subject of hadronically decaying bosons with high boosts, documenting the state-of-the-art identification techniques and highlighting typical results. The text is not limited to electroweak physics in the strict sense, but also discusses the use of electroweak vector-bosons as tool in the study of other subjects in particle physics, such as determinations of the proton structure or the search for new exotic particles. The book is particularly well suited for graduate students, starting their thesis work on topics that involve electroweak bosons, as the book provides a comprehensive description of phenomena observable at current accelerators as well as a summary of the most relevant experimental techniques.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the most complete characterization of the Higgs boson properties performed to date in the "golden channel," i.e., decay into a pair of Z bosons which subsequently decay into four leptons. The data collected by the CMS experiment in the so-called Run-II data-taking period of the LHC are used to produce an extensive set of results that test in detail the predictions of the Standard Model. Given the remarkable predictive power of the SM when including the Higgs boson, possible new physics will require even more extensive studies at higher statistics. A massive upgrade of the detectors is necessary to maintain the current physics performance in the harsh environment of the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, expected to start by the end of 2027. The CMS Collaboration will replace the current endcap calorimeters with a High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL). The HGCAL will be the very first large-scale silicon-based imaging calorimeter ever employed in a high-energy physics experiment. This book presents the results of the analysis of the test beam data collected with the first large-scale prototype of the HGCAL. The results of this analysis are used to corroborate the final design of the HGCAL and its nominal physics performance expected for the HL-LHC operations.

Book excerpt: The production of a Z boson, decaying into two leptons and produced in association with one or more b jets, is studied using proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were recorded in 2011 with the CMS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1. The Z(ll) + b-jets cross sections (where ll = [mu][mu] or ee) are measured separately for a Z boson produced with exactly one b jet and with at least two b jets. In addition, a cross section ratio is extracted for a Z boson produced with at least one b jet, relative to a Z boson produced with at least one jet. The measured cross sections are compared to various theoretical predictions, and the data favour the predictions in the five-flavour scheme, where b quarks are assumed massless. The kinematic properties of the reconstructed particles are compared with the predictions from the MadGraph event generator using the pythia parton shower simulation.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents several studies of monophoton final states using 35.9 fb^-1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016. The standard model Z([small nu] [small n̄ū])[small gamma] cross section is measured as a function of photon transverse momentum. No significant deviations from standard model predictions are observed. The results are also interpreted in the context of several new physics models. Limits are placed on new particle masses in simplified models of dark matter, the suppression scale of a dark matter effective field theory model, and the graviton mass scale in a model of extra spatial dimensions.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes two groundbreaking measurements in the precision frontier at the LHC: the first ever differential measurement of the Z-associated single top quark (tZq) production, and the luminosity measurement using Z boson production rate for the first time in CMS. Observed only in 2018, the tZq process is of great importance in probing top quark electroweak couplings. These couplings are natural places for new phenomena to happen in the top quark sector of the standard model. Yet, they are the least explored directly. One has to obtain a firm understanding of the modeling of sensitive distributions to new top-Z interactions. The present analysis marks a major milestone in this long-term effort. All distributions relevant for new phenomena, and/or modeling of tZq, are studied in full depth using advanced Machine Learning techniques. The luminosity and its uncertainty contributes to every physics result of the experiment. The method minutely developed in this thesis provides a complementary measurement that results in a significant overall reduction of uncertainties.

Book excerpt: Also we present a first measurement of the multiplicity and transverse momentum flow in the first LHC collision data at 900 GeV center-of-mass energy recorded in December 2009. The systematic bias to the measurement due to the event selection and track reconstruction are estimated using the full CMS simulation. The results are compared to the predictions of one of the soft QCD models, previously studied by CDF collaboration at the Tevatron.
