Book excerpt: Abstract: The results presented in this thesis use the full dataset collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment from the LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb^(−1). The first part is devoted to the search for the WWW production in the decay channel where each W boson decays leptonically (excluding leptonic tau decays). Upper limits are placed on the production cross-section in the fiducial phase space. The results are also interpreted in terms of the total cross-section when combined together with the semi-leptonic decay channel. In addition, limits on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings in an effective field theory approach are extracted. The second part presents a search for supersymmetry in events with multiple jets, two leptons of identical charges or three leptons (electrons or muons). The absence of any excess in the signal regions with respect to the Standard Model expectations is interpreted in terms of limits in the parameter space of 14 supersymmetric models and one mUED model

Book excerpt: Results are presented from a search for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in pp collisions in final states with two tau leptons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity between 18.1 inverse femtobarns and 19.6 inverse femtobarns at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted using simplified models describing the pair production and decays of charginos or tau sleptons. For chargino pair production, assuming that the third-generation sleptons are the lightest sleptons and that their masses lie midway between that of the chargino and the lightest neutralino, an excluded region in the plane of the neutralino mass vs. chargino mass is obtained. Chargino masses below 420 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level in the limit of a massless neutralino, and for neutralino masses up to 100 GeV, chargino masses up to 325 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Constraints are also placed on the cross section for pair production of tau sleptons as a function of mass, assuming a massless neutralino.

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is used to measure the energies and charges of the resulting cascade of particles produced in these collisions. This search focuses on the observation of massive, long-lived particles, such as the gluino, that would suggest new physics beyond the Standard Model. A custom trigger is used to probe time periods during which no proton collisions occur, thereby eliminating most backgrounds to the signal. The remaining backgrounds resulting from cosmic rays, beam-related effects, and instrumental noise, are further reduced using a series of sophisticated selection cuts. Candidate events passing all selection cuts are analyzed using a counting experiment and limits are placed on the cross sections and masses of the gluino and the supersymmetric top quark.

Book excerpt: We report the results of a search for strong production of supersymmetric particles in 20.1 fb1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed separately in events with either zero or at least one high-pT lepton (electron or muon), large missing transverse momentum, high jet multiplicity and at least three jets identified as originated from the fragmentation of a b-quark. No excess is observed with respect to the Standard Model predictions. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models involving gluinos and scalar top and bottom quarks, as well as a mSUGRA/CMSSM model. Lastly, gluino masses up to 1340 GeV are excluded, depending on the model, significantly extending the previous ATLAS limits.

In the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry with the lightest neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle, the neutralino can decay into a gravitino and a photon with a non-zero lifetime. The impact parameter of the photon relative to the beam-beam collision point can be reconstructed using converted photons. The method is sensitive to lifetimes of the order of [Special characters omitted.] (0.1 ns). The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.1 ± 0.1 fb -1 recorded in the first part of 2011 by the CMS experiment at the LHC at [Special characters omitted.] = 7 TeV. The search is performed using events containing photons, missing transverse energy and jets. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are presented on the cross section for such particles from pair-production, each of which decays into a photon and invisible particles.

A cross section measurement for the production of WZ is also performed on a subset of the collision data. No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model background, so lower bounds at the 95% confidence level are set on the production cross sections of hypothetical particles decaying to WZ in several theoretical scenarios. Assuming the Sequential Standard Model, W' bosons with masses below 1143 GeV/c2 are excluded. New limits are also set for several configurations of Low-Scale Technicolor.
