The analysis identifies the semileptonic decays of B mesons with high (p, p[sub t]) leptons and reconstructs the B meson decay length and charge by vertexing the lepton with a partially reconstructed D meson. Vertex charge is used to enrich the selection of neutral over charged B mesons. This method results in a sample of 581 neutral decays with high charge purity. The B candidate is tagged at production with a combined tag that exploits the large polarized b forward-backward asymmetry in conjunction with the opposite hemisphere b jet charge. The final state is tagged by the sign of the high (p, p[sub t]) lepton. From their preliminary analysis the authors find a mass difference between the two B[sub d][sup 0] mass eigenstates of, [Delta]m[sub d]= 0.452[+-] 0.074(stat)[+-] 0.049(syst) ps[sup[minus]1].

Book excerpt: Based on an 87-fb[sup -1] dataset collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B-Factory, a search for D[sup 0]-[bar D][sup 0] mixing has been made using the semileptonic decay modes D*[sup +] --> [pi][sup +] D[sup 0][sub z] D[sup 0] --> K*[epsilon][nu] (+c.c.). The use of these modes allows unambiguous flavor tagging and a combined fit of the D[sup 0] decay time and D*[sup +]-D[sup 0] mass difference ([Delta]M) distributions. The high-statistics sample of unmixed semileptonic D[sup 0] decays is used to model the [Delta]M distribution and time-dependence of mixed events directly from the data. Neural networks are used to select events and reconstruct the D[sup 0]. A result consistent with no charm mixing has been obtained. R[sub mix] = 0.0023 [+-] 0.0012 [+-] 0.0004. This corresponds to an upper limit of R[sub mix]

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results from the investigation of time dependent B{sub d}° {bar B}{sub d}° mixing in B → lepton X, B{sub d}° → D*− → {bar D}°?−, {bar D}° → K?− channel in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV using 110 pb−1 data collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The {bar D}° vertex is reconstructed. The B{sub d}° decay length is estimated using the distance from the primary vertex to the measured position of the D° vertex. The B° momentum is estimated using the D° momentum and a kinematic correction factor from Monte Carlo. With the dilution floating,?M{sub d} = 0.55 ±{sub 0.16}{sup 0.15} (stat) ± 0.06 (syst)ps−1 is measured.

Book excerpt: The authors report updates on two analyses of inclusive semileptonic B decays based on a dataset of 89 million B[bar B] events recorded with the BABAR detector at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance. Events are selected by fully reconstructing the decay of one B meson and identifying a charged lepton from the decay of the other [bar B] meson. IN the first analysis, the measurement of the first and second moment of the hadronic mass distribution in Cabibbo-favored [bar B] [yields] X[sub c][ell][bar [nu]] decays allows for the determination of the nonperturbative parameters [bar [Lambda]] and [lambda][sub 1] of Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) and V[sub cb]. In the second analysis, the hadronic mass distribution is used to measure the inclusive charmless semileptonic branching fraction and to determine V[sub ub].
