A simultaneous measurement of the fraction of longitudinal (f0) and right-handed (f+) W bosons yields the model-independent results f0 = 0.88 ± 0.11(stat) ± 0.06(syst) and f+ = -0.15 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.06(syst) with a correlation coefficient of -0.59. A measurement of f0 (f+) constraining f+ (f0) to its standard model value of 0.0 (0.7) yields f0 = 0.70 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.04(syst) (f+ = 0.01 ± 0.02(stat) ± 0.05(syst)). All these results are consistent with standard model expectations.

Book excerpt: A measurement of the polarization of the W boson from top quark decay is an excellent test of the V-A form of the charged-current weak interaction in the standard model. Since the longitudinal W boson is intimately related to the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, and the standard model gives a specific prediction for the fraction of longitudinal W bosons from top decays, it is of particular interest for study. This thesis presents a measurement of W boson polarization in top quark decay through an analysis of the cos [theta]* distribution in the lepton-plus-jets channel of t[bar t] candidate events from p[bar p] collisions at [radical]s = 1.96 TeV. This measurement uses an integrated luminosity of [approx]162 pb[sup -1] of data collected with the CDF Run II detector, resulting in 31 t[bar t] candidate events with at least one identified b jet. Using a binned likelihood fit to the cos [theta]* distribution from the t[bar t] candidate events found in this sample, the fraction of W bosons with longitudinal polarization is determined to be F[sub 0] = 0.99[sub -0.35][sup +0.29](stat.) [+-] 0.19(syst.), F[sub 0]> 0.33 [at] 95% CL. This result is consistent with the standard model prediction, given a top quark mass of 174.3 GeV/c[sup 2], of F[sub 0] = 0.701 [+-] 0.012.

Top quarks are expected to decay to a W-boson and a b-quark nearly 100% of the time. If the branching ratio of t → Wb is lower than one, the distribution of the number of b-tagged jets will shift to lower multiplicities. A simultaneous likelihood fit to the number of b-tagged jets distributions in the lepton+jets and dilepton channels is performed on 4.7 fb−1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector to extract both the branching ratio and the tt ̄ cross section. The branching ratio of t → Wb, R, is measured to be 1.06±0.11, which is consistent with the Standard Model value. This is the first measurement of the t → Wb branching ratio performed with the ATLAS detector using both the lepton+jets and dilepton channels at the LHC. The tt ̄ cross section is measured to be [special characters omitted] pb, which agrees with NNLO predictions.

Book excerpt: In 1995 the top quark was discovered at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab by the CDF and D0 collaborations [1, 2]. It is the most massive known elementary particle and its mass is currently measured with a precision of about 1.3% [3, 4]. However, the measurements of several other top quark properties are still statistically limited, so the question remains whether the Standard Model of elementary particle physics successfully predicts these properties. This thesis addresses one interesting aspect of top quark decay, the helicity of the produced W boson. Until the start of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the Tevatron with a center-of-mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV is the only collider, where top quarks can be produced. In the Standard Model the top quark decays predominantly into a W boson and a b quark, with a branching ratio close to 100%. The V-A structure of the weak interaction of the Standard Model predicts that the W{sup +} bosons from the top quark decay t {yields} W{sup +}b are dominantly either longitudinally polarized or left handed, while right handed W bosons are heavily suppressed and even forbidden in the limit of a massless b quark. Under the assumption of a massless b quark, for a top quark mass of 173 GeV/c{sup 2} the Standard Model predicts the fraction F0 of longitudinally polarized W bosons to be 0.7 and 0.3 for the fraction F{_} of left handed W bosons, while the fraction F{sub +} of right handed W bosons is predicted to be zero. Since next-to-leading order corrections change these fractions only slightly, a significant deviation from the predicted value for F{sub 0} or a nonzero value for F{sub +} could indicate new physics. Left-right symmetric models [5], for example, lead to a significant right handed fraction of W bosons in top decays. Such a right handed component (V+A coupling) would lead to a smaller left handed fraction, while F{sub 0} would remain unchanged. Since the decay rate to longitudinal W bosons depends on the Yukawa coupling of the top quarks, the measurement of F{sub 0} is sensitive to the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. Alternative models can lead to an altered F{sub 0} fraction. In this analysis the W helicity fractions are measured in a selected sample rich in t{bar B} events where one lepton, at least four jets, and missing transverse energy are required. All kinematic quantities describing the t{bar t} decay are determined. As a sensitive observable, we use the cosine of the decay angle {theta}*, which is defined as the angle between the momentum of the charged lepton in the W boson rest frame and the W boson momentum in the top quark rest frame. The data used in this analysis were taken with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) in the years 2002-2006 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 955 pb{sup -1}. Previous CDF measurements of the W boson helicity fractions in top quark decays used either the square of the invariant mass of the charged lepton and the b quark jet, M{sub {ell}b}{sup 2}, or the lepton p{sub T} distribution as a discriminant. The D0 collaboration used a matrix-element method to extract a value of F{sub 0}; in a second analysis the reconstructed distribution of cos {theta}* was utilized to measure F{sub +}. CDF gives the latest value of F{sub 0} = 0.74{sub -0.34}{sup +0.22}, while D measured F{sub 0} = 0.56 {+-} 0.31. The CDF collaboration also gives the current upper limit of F{sub +}

Consequently, the quantum state in which a top quark is produced is imparted to its decay products. In particular, its spin state impacts the angular distribution of its decay products. This research presents a measurement of top and antitop spin polarization vectors in tt̅ pair production decaying to lepton-plus-jets final states using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions with a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 inverse femtobarns. The angles between the lepton and a set of three orthonormal basis axes, one of which is the familiar helicity basis, are measured. The axes are defined such that the tt̅ differential production cross section, with respect to the cosine of the angle for a given axis, is linearly proportional to the polarization along that axis. The polarizations are computed using a profiled likelihood fit to templated distributions of the cosines. The top and antitop helicity polarizations are found to be -0.031 ± 0.023 and -0.059 ± 0.022 respectively.
