Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the fractions F0 and F+ of longitudinally polarized and right-handed W bosons in top-quark decays using data collected with the CDF II detector. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 955 pb−1. We select t{bar t} candidate events with one lepton, at least four jets, and missing transverse energy. Our helicity measurement uses the decay angle [theta]*, which is defined as the angle between the momentum of the charged lepton in the W boson rest-frame and the W momentum in the top-quark rest-frame. The cos[theta]* distribution in the data is determined by full kinematic reconstruction of the t{bar t} candidates. We find F0= 0.59 ± 0.12(stat){sup +0.07}{sub -0.06}(syst) and F+=-0.03 ± 0.06(stat){sup +0.04}{sub -0.03}(syst), which is consistent with the standard model prediction. We set an upper limit on the fraction of right-handed W bosons of F+ ≤ 0.10 at the 95% confidence level.

The standard model predicts the helicity of these W bosons to be either negative or zero, but not positive. In case the top quark sector is already influenced by effects from new physics, the weak charged current, responsible for the decay of the top quark, can be altered from a pure V=A charged current interaction to a pure V+A interaction or a mixture between these two scenarios. This would decrease the fraction of W bosons with negative helicity and W bosons with positive helicity would appear. A change would then be visible in the distribution of the decay angle ? between the lepton and the (negative) b quark direction in the rest frame of the W boson.

The measurements use data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1. The production of a Higgs boson in association with a W or Z boson is established, with observed (expected) significances of 4.0 (4.1) and 5.3 (5.1) standard deviations, respectively. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into bottom quark pairs with an electroweak gauge boson, W or Z, decaying into leptons are measured as a function of the gauge boson transverse momentum in kinematic fiducial volumes. The cross-section measurements are all consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and the total uncertainties vary from 30% in the high gauge boson transverse momentum regions to 85% in the low regions

This Letter presents a measurement of the distribution of one such variable, the jet pull angle. The pull angle is measured for jets produced in tt-bar events with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other decaying to jets using 20.3 fb–1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of √s=8 TeV at the LHC. The jet pull angle distribution is corrected for detector resolution and acceptance effects and is compared to various models.
