Book excerpt: The measurement of transverse single spin asymmetries provides insight into the structure of the nucleon. Originally expected to be small, results from PHENIX and other experiments show significant asymmetries in the forward momentum direction of the polarized proton over a wide range of center-of-mass energies. Several mechanisms have been proposed that attempt to explain these asymmetries, which include initial and final state effects based on transverse momentum dependent distributions and perturbative Quantum Chromodynamic (pQCD) calculations at higher twist. Studying the species, and the kinematic dependencies of these transverse single spin asymmetries will help to disentangle the origin of the observed asymmetries. Using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the transverse single spin asymmetry (A N ) of inclusive eta mesons produced from transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at center of mass energy of 200 GeV at forward rapidity is measured. In addition, the predictive power of pQCD to explain this asymmetry is tested via the measurement of the eta meson Cross Section.

Book excerpt: We report the first measurement of the transverse momentum dependence of double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of pions in deep inelastic scattering off the longitudinally polarized proton. Data have been obtained using a polarized electron beam of 5.7 GeV with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). A significant non-zero $\sin2\phi$ single spin asymmetry was also observed for the first time indicating strong spin-orbit correlations for transversely polarized quarks in the longitudinally polarized proton. The azimuthal modulations of single spin asymmetries have been measured over a wide kinematic range.

The milestone of the first extraction of Transversity and the Sivers function for the u- and d-quarks deserves a special mention. In the same period, historic experiments that in the last decade contributed to the first pioneering measurements in the SIDIS sector, have concluded their data taking, and their place is being taken by upgrades of existing or new facilities. These are the result of the new interesting phenomena which are appearing and call for additional experimental information and novel experimental techniques. Book excerpt: The experiment E06010 measured the target single spin asymmetry (SSA) in the semiinclusive deep inelastic (SIDIS) n↑(e,e'?-)X reaction with a transversely polarized 3He target as an e ective neutron target. This is the very rst independent measurement of the neutron SSA, following the measurements at HERMES and COMPASS on the proton and the deuteron. The experiment acquired data in Hall A at Je erson Laboratory with a continuous electron beam of energy 5.9 GeV, probing the valence quark region, with x = 0.13 → 0.41, at Q2 = 1.31 → 3.1 GeV2. The two contributing mechanisms to the measured asymmetry, viz, the Collins effect and the Sivers effect can be realized through the variation of the asymmetry as a function of the Collins and Sivers angles. The neutron Collins and Sivers moments, associated with the azimuthal angular modulations, are extracted from the measured asymmetry for the very first time and are presented in this thesis. The kinematics of this experiment is comparable to the HERMES proton measurement. However, the COMPASS measurements on deuteron and proton are in the low-x region. The results of this experiment are crucial as the first step toward the extraction of quark transversity and Sivers distribution functions in SIDIS. With the existing results on proton and deuteron, these new results on neutron will provide powerful constraints on the transversity and Sivers distributions of both the u and d-quarks in the valence region.

The experiment used the continuous electron beam provided by the CEBAF accelerator with a beam energy of 5.9 GeV. Hadrons were detected in a high-resolution spectrometer in coincidence with the scattered electrons detected by the BigBite spectrometer. The kinematic coverage focuses on the valence quark region, x = 0.19 to 0.34, at Q2 = 1.77 to 2.73 (GeV/c)2. This is the first measurement on a neutron target. The data from this experiment, when combined with the world data on the proton and the deuteron, will provide constraints on the transversity and Sivers distribution functions on both the u and d-quarks in the valence region. In this work we report on the single spin asymmetries in the SIDIS n↑(e, e'?+)X reaction.

The higher order corrections to the non-singlet polarized cross section, [sigma]{sub NS}{sup LL}, are sizeable and similar to those found for the unpolarized cross section. The non-singlet asymmetry parameter, A{sup NS}{sub LL}, is very stable against higher order corrections and is a direct measurement of the non-singlet (i.e. valence) polarized quark distributions within the proton.

A substantial sin [Phi]h amplitude has been measured in the distribution of the cross section asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal angle [Phi]h of the produced neutral pion. The dependence of this amplitude on Bjorken x and on the pion transverse momentum is extracted with significantly higher precision than previous data and is compared to model calculations.

The electron beam was polarized using a GaAs-cathode and the target was polarized via Dynamic Nuclear Polarization. The beam polarization was around 70% and the target polarization was between 10 and 20 percent. The data at 2.5 GeV beam energy and two different magnetic field settings (2250 A and -1500 A) were collected in Hall B at Jefferson Lab in the Fall of 1998. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: In 2010, the COMPASS experiment at CERN took data with a 160 GeV muon beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. In this thesis, this data is analyzed for azimuthal target spin asymmetries, including five single spin and three double spin asymmetries in hard exclusive omega meson production.For the asymmetry extraction an extended unbinned maximum likelyhood fit, is used. With this method the eight azimuthal asymmetries from hard exclusive omega meson production plus eight additional asymmetries of the same azimuthal angle modulation from semi-inclusive background events are calculated simultaneously. Therefore every event from the signal region is assigned with the probabilities obtained with the fit to the missing energy distribution.The asymmetries obtained in this analysis can help to constrain Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). This is done by comparing the measurements to model calculations of the asymmetries in the COMPASS kinematics. In this thesis the results are compared to the model from Goloskokov and Kroll, which is in good agreement with the data. Especially in combination with results from other vector meson channels, as for example the rho meson, which has already been analyzed, additional constrains on the GPDs E for u and d quarks are enabled
