Book excerpt: The cross section for Higgs boson production in pp collisions is studied using the H to WW decay mode, followed by leptonic decays of the W bosons to an oppositely charged electron-muon pair in the final state. The measurements are performed using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 inverse-femtobarns. The Higgs boson transverse momentum (pT) is reconstructed using the lepton pair pT and missing pT. The differential cross section times branching fraction is measured as a function of the Higgs boson pT in a fiducial phase space defined to match the experimental acceptance in terms of the lepton kinematics and event topology. The production cross section times branching fraction in the fiducial phase space is measured to be 39 +/- 8 (stat) +/- 9 (syst) fb. The measurements are found to agree, within experimental uncertainties, with theoretical calculations based on the standard model.

Book excerpt: The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) was used to measure the transverse momentum distribution of W boson produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider. The W bosons were identified by the decay W 2!e[nu]. The results are in good agreement with a next-to-leading order calculation. The cross section for W production with P{sub T}> 50 GeV/c is 423 {plus minus} 58 (stat.) {plus minus} 108 (sys.) pb. 58 refs., 53 figs., 16 tabs.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a measurement of the W boson mass from a fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the muon in W decay. In past measurements this technique was used as a cross-check, however, now presents the best method in terms of systematic uncertainty. We discuss all sources of systematic uncertainty with emphasis on those to which the muon p{sub T} measurement is particularly sensitive, specifically, those associated with modeling the production and decay of W bosons. The data were collected with the CDF II detector between March 2002 and September 2003 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of (191 ± 11) pb−1. We measure the W mass to be (80.316 ± 0.066{sub stat.} ± 0.051{sub syst.}) GeV/c2 = (80.316 ± 0.083) GeV/c2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Quantum Field Theory is a textbook intended for the graduate physics course covering relativistic quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics, and Feynman diagrams. The authors make these subjects accessible through carefully worked examples illustrating the technical aspects of the subject, and intuitive explanations of what is going on behind the mathematics. After presenting the basics of quantum electrodynamics, the authors discuss the theory of renormalization and its relation to statistical mechanics, and introduce the renormalization group. This discussion sets the stage for a discussion of the physical principles that underlie the fundamental interactions of elementary particle physics and their description by gauge field theories.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the measurement of the Higgs boson cross section in the diphoton decay channel. The measurement relies on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collected data correspond to the full Run-2 dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The measured cross sections are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson interactions in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework. The results presented in this thesis represent a reduction by a factor 2 of the different photon and jet energy scale and resolution systematic uncertainties with respect to the previous ATLAS publication. The thesis details the calibration of electron and photon energies in ATLAS, in particular the measurement of the presampler energy scale and the estimation of its systematic uncertainty. This calibration was used to perform a measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the H → γγ and H → 4l channels using the 36 fb−1 dataset.

This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents two analyses, the first of which involves the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson, a so-called W' boson. This new gauge boson is predicted by some theories extending the Standard Model gauge group to solve some of its conceptual problems. Decays of the W' boson in final states with a lepton (l± = e± , μ±) and the corresponding (anti-)neutrino are considered. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 at a center of mass energy of √s =13 TeV is used for the analysis. In turn, the second analysis presents a measurement of the double-differential cross section of the process pp->Z/gamma^* + X -> l^+l^- + X, including a gamma gamma induced contribution, at a center of mass energy of sqrt{s} = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed in an invariant mass region of 116 GeV to 1500 GeV as a function of invariant mass and absolute rapidity of the l^+l^-- pair, and as a function of invariant mass and pseudorapidity separation of the l^+l^-- pair. The data analyzed was recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3/fb. It is expected that the measured cross sections are sensitive to the PDFs at very high values of the Bjorken-x scaling variable, and to the photon structure of the proton.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a Standard Model (SM) cross section measurement of W+bb as well as a search for neutral Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) decaying to tau pairs. The measurement of W+bb was performed using proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV in a data sample collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 1/fb. The W+bb events are selected in the W to muon + neutrino decay mode by requiring a muon with transverse momentum pT>25 GeV and pseudorapidity absolute eta less than 2.1, and exactly two b-tagged jets with pT>25 GeV and absolute eta less than 2.4. The measured W+bb production cross section in the fiducial region, calculated at the level of final-state particles, is 0.53± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.) ± 0.06 (theory) ± 0.01 (lum.) pb, in agreement with the SM prediction. This measurement is a sensitive test of heavy quark production calculated with perturbative QCD. It also serves as an important benchmark in new physics searches which include a single isolated lepton and one or more b jets in the final state, as W+bb becomes an irreducible background. Also presented is a search for the CP-even MSSM Higgs bosons, H and h, and the CP-odd MSSM pseudoscalar, A, in their decays to tau pairs. This search is performed using events recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012 at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 8 TeV respectively. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 24.6 1/fb, with 4.9 1/fb at 7 TeV and 19.7 1/fb at 8 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity to neutral MSSM Higgs bosons, the search includes the case where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a b-quark jet. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Problems in Particle Physics and Cosmology covers the proceedings of the workshop ""Current Problems in Particle Physics and Cosmology"", held in Ioannina, Greece on June 25-29, 1990. The book focuses on the reactions, problems, methodologies, and processes involved in particle physics and cosmology. The selection first offers information on the search for cosmic axions and experimental limits on light scalars/pseudoscalars and experimental tests of the standard model using the recently collected UA2 data. Topics include limits on the production of light scalar and pseudoscalar particles; measurement of SM parameters; transverse momenta distributions of the W and Z bosons; and mass spectroscopy with jets. The text then takes a look at heavy top quark, fermion mixings, and electroweak multi-particle-production at TeV energies. Discussions focus on third and second generation masses and mixing; neutrino sector; threshold energy; total inelastic multiparticle cross sections; and geometrical flavor interactions at very high energies. The publication examines supersymmetry breaking and dynamical determination of superstring parameters; four-dimensional strings and low energy predictions; and gravity from superstrings. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in particle physics and cosmology.
