Book excerpt: This book is based on the author's work in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, in which neutrinos are generated by a proton beam and are detected by near and far neutrino detectors. In order to achieve the precise measurement of the neutrino oscillation, an accurate understanding of the neutrino beam and the neutrino interaction is essential. Thus, the author measured the neutrino beam properties and the neutrino interaction cross sections using a near neutrino detector called INGRID and promoted a better understanding of them. Then, the author performed a neutrino oscillation analysis using the neutrino beam and neutrino interaction models verified by the INGRID measurements. As a result, some values of the neutrino CP phase are disfavored at the 90% confidence level. If the measurement precision is further improved, we may be able to discover the finite CP phase which involves the CP violation. Thus, this result is an important step towards the discovery of CP violation in the lepton sector, which may be the key to understanding the origin of the matter–antimatter asymmetry in the universe.

Book excerpt: The discovery of neutrino oscillations, and therefore that they have non-zero mass, provided the first conclusive proof of physics beyond the Standard Model [1]. Recently, neutrinos have become a valuable addition to the field of multi-messenger astrophysics to improve the study of distant astrophysical phenomena [2]. Fundamental to the operation of the numerous current neutrino experiments across a broad energy-scale is knowledge of the neutrino interaction rate or cross-section. In neutrino experiment, there exists a gap in the measurement of the neutrino-nucleon cross-section between approximately 300 GeV and a TeV. In this region, the Standard Model cross- section transitions away from its linear relationship with neutrino energy. This thesis describes a measurement of the total muon-neutrino-nucleon cross-section from 100 GeV to 5 TeV via a flux- dependent analysis performed on a dataset of through-going neutrino-induced muons detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. An updated energy reconstruction utilizing DirectReco, a new method that generates event hypotheses using direct photon propagation, and tailored to the physics of the region of interest is applied. This provides several benefits, including improved accuracy of the event hypotheses and incorporation of the latest models of the glacial detector medium. The cross-section is measured as a normalization of the predicted flux where the parameters are scaling factors on the Standard Model cross-section, the Cooper-Sarkar-Mertsch-Sarkar (CSMS) model [3]. Two bins are defined, 100 - 350 GeV, overlapping with existing data, and 350 GeV - 5 TeV, the unmeasured region of phase space. A prior is calculated from existing accelerator neutrino beam cross-section measurements for the overlapping energy range of 100 - 350 GeV, additional input in constraining the fit for the low-energy region of the sample. The resultant Standard Model cross- section scaling factors are calculated both with the accelerator prior applied (case A) and without (case B). The results are, for 100 - 350 GeV and 350 GeV - 5 TeV regions, respectively, 0.82+0.088́20.07 and 1.23+0.07-0.07 for case A and 0.27+0.07-0.05 and 0.78+0.08-0.07 for case B. This is the world's first measurement for the 350 GeV to 5 TeV energy region of the neutrino-nucleon cross-section, although forthcoming accelerator neutrino experiment FASER? will provide a comparable measurement of the cross-section of this energy range in the near future [4]. Both indicate tension with Standard Model, although interpretation of the result is subtly different for the two cases. Case A is a "best possible" measurement that utilizes the current maximal public knowledge of the cross-section. Case B is an IceCube-data-driven result, relatively free of influences inherent in existing cross-section models. The results presented here set a benchmark for future prospects of improvements and expansion of the IceCube-based cross-section studies -- to higher energies, and to multiple flavours -- and for the broad field.

Book excerpt: The study of neutrino interactions has recently experienced a renaissance, motivated by the fact that neutrino oscillation experiments depend critically on an accurate models of neutrino interactions. These models have to predict not only the signal and background populations that oscillation experiments see at near and far detectors, but they must also predict how the neutrino's energy which enters a nucleus gets transferred to energies of the particles that leave the nucleus after the neutrino interacts. Over the past year there have been a number of new results on many different neutrino (and antineutrino) interaction channels using several different target nuclei. These results are often not in agreement with predictions extraolated from charged lepton scattering measurements, or even from predictions anchored to neutrino measurements on deuterium. These new measurements are starting to give the community the handles needed to improve the theoretical description of neutrino interactions, which ultimately pave the way for precision oscillation measurements. This report briefly summarizes recent results and points out where those results differ from the predictions based on current models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the measurement of the charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE) neutrino-nucleon cross section at neutrino energies around 1 GeV. This measurement has two main physical motivations. On one hand, the neutrino-nucleon interactions at few GeV is a region where existing old data are sparse and with low statistics. The current measurement populates low energy regions with higher statistics and precision than previous experiments. On the other hand, the CCQE interaction is the most useful interaction in neutrino oscillation experiments. The CCQE channel is used to measure the initial and final neutrino fluxes in order to determine the neutrino fraction that disappeared. The neutrino oscillation experiments work at low neutrino energies, so precise measurement of CCQE interactions are essential for flux measurements. The main goal of this thesis is to measure the CCQE absolute neutrino cross section from the SciBooNE data. The SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment (SciBooNE) is a neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering off experiment. The neutrino energy spectrum works at energies around 1 GeV. SciBooNE was running from June 8th 2007 to August 18th 2008. In that period, the experiment collected a total of 2.65 x 102° protons on target (POT). This thesis has used full data collection in neutrino mode 0.99 x 102° POT. A CCQE selection cut has been performed, achieving around 70% pure CCQE sample. A fit method has been exclusively developed to determine the absolute CCQE cross section, presenting results in a neutrino energy range from 0.2 to 2 GeV. The results are compatible with the NEUT predictions. The SciBooNE measurement has been compared with both Carbon (MiniBoonE) and deuterium (ANL and BNL) target experiments, showing a good agreement in both cases.

Book excerpt: The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) produces an intense muon neutrino beam used by the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS), a neutrino oscillation experiment, and the Main INjector ExpeRiment v-A, (MINERv A), a neutrino interaction experiment. Absolute neutrino cross sections are determined via [sigma]v = N v/[Phi]v, where the numerator is the measured number of neutrino interactions in the MINOS Detector and the denominator is the flux of incident neutrinos. Many past neutrino experiments have measured relative cross sections due to a lack of precise measurements of the incident neutrino flux, normalizing to better established reaction processes, such as quasielastic neutrino-nucleon scattering. But recent measurements of neutrino interactions on nuclear targets have brought to light questions about our understanding of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. In this thesis the v[mu] inclusive charged current cross section on iron is measured using the MINOS Detector. The MINOS detector consists of alternating planes of steel and scintillator. The MINOS detector is optimized to measure muons produced in charged current v[mu] interactions. Along with muons, these interactions produce hadronic showers. The neutrino energy is measured from the total energy the particles deposit in the detector. The incident neutrino flux is measured using the muons produced alongside the neutrinos in meson decay. Three ionization chamber monitors located in the downstream portion of the NuMI beamline are used to measure the muon flux and thereby infer the neutrino flux by relation to the underlying pion and kaon meson flux. This thesis describes the muon flux instrumentation in the NuMI beam, its operation over the two year duration of this measurement, and the techniques used to derive the neutrino flux.

Book excerpt: Elucidating the nature of neutrino oscillation continues to be a goal in the vanguard of the efforts of physics experiment. As neutrino oscillation searches seek an increasingly elusive signal, a thorough understanding of the possible backgrounds becomes ever more important. Measurements of neutrino-nucleus interaction cross sections are key to this understanding. Searches for [nu]{sub {mu}} → [nu]{sub e} oscillation - a channel that may yield insight into the vanishingly small mixing parameter [theta]13, CP violation, and the neutrino mass hierarchy - are particularly susceptible to contamination from neutral current single [pi]° (NC 1[pi]°) production. Unfortunately, the available data concerning NC 1[pi]° production are limited in scope and statistics. Without satisfactory constraints, theoretical models of NC 1[pi]° production yield substantially differing predictions in the critical E{sub {nu}} ≈ 1 GeV regime. Additional investigation of this interaction can ameliorate the current deficiencies. The Mini Booster Neutrino Experiment (MiniBooNE) is a short-baseline neutrino oscillation search operating at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). While the oscillation search is the principal charge of the MiniBooNE collaboration, the extensive data (≈ 106 neutrino events) offer a rich resource with which to conduct neutrino cross section measurements. This work concerns the measurement of both neutrino and antineutrino NC 1[pi]° production cross sections at MiniBooNE. The size of the event samples used in the analysis exceeds that of all other similar experiments combined by an order of magnitude. We present the first measurements of the absolute NC 1[pi]° cross section as well as the first differential cross sections in both neutrino and antineutrino mode. Specifically, we measure single differential cross sections with respect to pion momentum and pion angle. We find the flux-averaged, total cross sections for NC 1[pi]° production on CH2 to be (4.76 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.76{sub sys}) x 10−4° cm2/nucleon at E{sub {nu}} = 808 MeV for neutrino induced production and (1.48 ± 0.05{sub stat} ± 0.23{sub sys}) x 10−4° cm2/nucleon at E{sub {nu}} = 664 MeV for antineutrino induced production.

Book excerpt: The quasi-elastic neutrino nucleon cross section measurement has been measured in the low energy region less than 100 GeV. The data agree well with the model proposed by C.H. Llewellyn Smith. This model predicts that the quasi-elastic cross section should be constant in the high enery region. The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab provides data which allows us to measure the quasi-elastic cross section for both neutrinos and anti-neutrinos at high energy. We find that [alpha] qe Nucleon (nu) = 0.94 " 0.03(stat.) " 0.07(syst.), and [alpha] qe Nucleon (nu-bar) = 1.12 " 0.04(stat.) " 0.10(syst.) for neutrino and anti-neutrino, respectively.
