Book excerpt: The neutron capture cross section of /sup 238/U was measured near 24.3, 69.8, 80.3, 131.0, 165.9 and 181.4 keV with the Fe-filtered neutron time-of-flight technique. The measured capture cross sections at these energies are respectively (496 +- 15), (297 +- 22), (190 +- 9), (167 +- 6), (128 +- 7), and (118 +- 6) mb. The evaluated ENDF/B-IV capture cross section is in satisfactory agreement with the results of this measurement near 24.3 and 131.0 keV, but discrepancies of about 10 to 20 percent are observed at the other energies.

DANCE is a 4[pi] calorimetric scintillator array consisting of 160 BaF2 crystals. Measurements were made on a 48 mg/cm2 depleted uranium target. The cross sections are in general good agreement with previous measurements. The gamma-ray emission spectra, as a function of gamma multiplicity, were also measured and compared to model calculations.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is the precise determination of the /sup 238/U neutron capture yield (i.e., the probability of neutron absorption) as a function of neutron energy with the highest available neutron energy resolution. The motivation for this undertaking arises from the central role played by the /sup 238/U neutron capture process in the calculation of the neutron balance of both thermal reactors and fast breeder reactors. The present measurement was performed using the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA) facility. The pulsed beam of neutrons from the ORELA facility is collimated on a sample of /sup 238/U. The neutron capture rate in the sample is measured, as a function of neutron time-of-flight (TOF), by detecting the gamma rays from the /sup 238/U(n, .gamma.)/sup 239/U reaction with a large gamma-ray detector surrounding the /sup 238/U sample. At each energy, the capture yield is proportional to the observed capture rate divided by the measured intensity of the neutron beam. The constant of proportionality (the normalization constant) is obtained as the ratio of theoretical to experimentally measured areas under small /sup 238/U resonances where the resonance parameters have been determined from high resolution /sup 238/U transmission measurements. The cross section for the reaction /sup 238/U(n, .gamma.)/sup 239/U can be derived from the measured capture yield if one applies appropriate corrections for multiple scattering and resonance self-shielding. The present work will allow the extension of the resolved resonance region in /sup 238/U from its current limit of 4 keV up to 20 keV. In addition, some 200 /sup 238/U neutron resonances in the energy range from 250 eV to 10 keV have been observed which had not been detected in previous measurements. These results are relevant for both reactor design and for the understanding of the structure of the (/sup 238/U + n) compound nucleus. 33 refs., 20 figs., 9 tabs.

This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.
