Book excerpt: Angular distributions of recoil-proton polarization for elastic scattering of positive and negative pi mesons on protons were measured at 523, 572, and 689 Mev incidentpion kinetic energy. The pion source was an internal target of the Berkeley Bevatron. Polarization measurements were made by observing the azimuthal asymmetry of sample angular distributions of recoil protons that scatter in large carbon-plate spark chambers. The spark chambers proved to be very suitable polarization analyzerdetectors. The spark chambers were triggered by an array of scintillation and Cerenkov counters that identified the particles entering the chambers as recoil protons from elastic pion-proton scattering. Two plausible nonunique sets of phase shifts were obtained by employing: restrictive assumptions related to the higher resonances, available pion-proton total and differential cross sections measured at nearby energies, and the measurements of this experiment. One set is characterized by a J = 3/2, T = 1/2, D-wave resonance; the other set is characterized by a J = 3/2, T = 1/2, P-wave resonance at 600-Mev incidentpion energy. 38 references. (auth).

Book excerpt: The polarization of the recoil proton for .pi.p and .pi.−p elastic scattering has been measured for various angles at 547 MeV/c and 625 MeV/c by a collaboration involving The George Washington University; the University of California, Los Angeles; and Abilene Christian University. The experiment was performed at the P3 East experimental area of the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Beam intensities varied from 0.4 to 1.0 x 107 .pi.−'s/sec and from 3.0 to 10.0 x 107 .pi./sup +/'s/sec. The beam spot size at the target was 1 cm in the horizontal direction by 2.5 cm in the vertical direction. A liquid-hydrogen target was used in a flask 5.7 cm in diameter and 10 cm high. The scattered pion and recoil proton were detected in coincidence using the Large Acceptance Spectrometer (LAS) to detect and momentum analyze the pions and the JANUS recoil proton polarimeter to detect and measure the polarization of the protons. Results from this experiment are compared with previous measurements of the polarization, with analyzing power data previously taken by this group, and to partial-wave analysis predictions. 12 refs., 53 figs., 18 tabs.

Book excerpt: The ratio of the electric and magnetic proton form factors, G{sub Ep}/G{sub Mp}, has been obtained in two Hall A experiments, from measurements of the longitudinal and transverse polarization of the recoil proton, P{sub l} and P{sub t}, respectively, in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons, {rvec e}p {yields} e{rvec p}. Together these experiments cover the Q{sup 2}-range 0.5 to 5.6 GeV{sup 2}. A new experiment is currently being prepared, to extend the Q{sup 2}-range to 9 GeV{sup 2} in Hall C.

Double-polarization experiments have become the preferred technique to measure the proton and neutron electric form factors at high momentum transfers. The recently completed GEp-III experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility used the recoil polarization method to extend the knowledge of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio GpE/GpM to Q2 = 8.5 GeV2. In this paper we present the preliminary results of the experiment.
