Book Synopsis Low Temperature Detectors for Neutrinos and Dark Matter by : Klaus Pretzl
Download or read book Low Temperature Detectors for Neutrinos and Dark Matter written by Klaus Pretzl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last few years astrophysicists and elementary particle physicists have been working jointly on the following fascinating phenomena: 1. The solar neutrino puzzle and the question: What happens to the neutrinos on their way from the sun to the earth? 2. The growing evidence that our universe is filled with about 10 times more matter than is visible and the question: What is dark matter made of? 3. The supernovae explosions and the question: What do neutrinos tell us about such explosions and vice versa? The experimental investigation of these phenomena is difficult and involves unconventional techniques. These are presently under development, and bring together such seemingly disparate disciplines as astrophysics and elementary particle physics on the one hand and superconductivity and solid-state physics on the other. This book contains the proceedings of a workshop held in March 1987 at which the above subjects and their experimental investigation were discussed. The proposed experimental methods are very new. They involve frontier developments in low temperature and solid-state physics. The book should be useful to researchers and students who actively work on these subjects or plan to enter the field. It also offers the non-expert reader with some physics background a good survey of the activities in this field.

Book Synopsis Precision Measurements to Test the Standard Model and for Explosive Nuclear Astrophysics by : Adrian Antonio Valverde
Download or read book Precision Measurements to Test the Standard Model and for Explosive Nuclear Astrophysics written by Adrian Antonio Valverde and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents two significant results in the field of precision measurements in low-energy nuclear physics. Firstly, it presents a precise half-life determination of 11C, leading to the most precise ft-value for a beta decay transition between mirror nuclides, an important advance in the testing of the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. Secondly, it describes a high-precision mass measurement of 56Cu, a critical nucleus for determining the path of the astrophysical rapid-proton capture process, performed by the author using the LEBIT Penning trap at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. This new measurement resolves discrepancies in previously-reported calculated mass excesses. In addition, the thesis also presents the construction and testing of a radio-frequency quadrupole cooler and buncher that will be part of the future N = 126 factory at Argonne National Laboratory aimed at producing nuclei of interest for the astrophysical rapid-neutron capture process for the first time.
Book Synopsis Estimating LUX-ZEPLIN's Sensitivity to Sub-GeV Dark Matter Scattering Off Electrons in Xenon by : Gus Eberlein
Download or read book Estimating LUX-ZEPLIN's Sensitivity to Sub-GeV Dark Matter Scattering Off Electrons in Xenon written by Gus Eberlein and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising 85% of the mass of the universe, dark matter is one of the most pressing outstanding questions of physics. When it comes to directly detecting dark matter, the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment has unparalleled sensitivity. We examine the detector's capability to detect sub-GeV dark matter scattering off the electrons in xenon, LZ's scintillation medium. We develop a signal model by calculating the expected DM-electron event rates as a function of electron recoil energy and as a function of the number of freed electrons. Alongside an established backgrounds model, this signal model is used to simulate events in the LZ detector. With this simulated data and a cut-and-count analysis, we are able to estimate cross sections of dark matter-electron scattering down to which LZ can detect the signal over the background. We find that LUX-ZEPLIN will be able to detect certain light dark matter models at a much greater sensitivity than previous direct detection experiments.
Book Synopsis Explosives Detection using Magnetic and Nuclear Resonance Techniques by : Jacques Fraissard
Download or read book Explosives Detection using Magnetic and Nuclear Resonance Techniques written by Jacques Fraissard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) a highly promising new technique for bulk explosives detection: relatively inexpensive, more compact than NMR, but with considerable selectivity. Since the NQR frequency is insensitive to long-range variations in composition, mixing explosives with other materials, such as the plasticizers in plastic explosives, makes no difference. The NQR signal strength varies linearly with the amount of explosive, and is independent of its distribution within the volume monitored. NQR spots explosive types in configurations missed by the X-ray imaging method. But if NQR is so good, why it is not used everywhere? Its main limitation is the low signal-to-noise ratio, particularly with the radio-frequency interference that exists in a field environment, NQR polarization being much weaker than that from an external magnetic field. The distinctive signatures are there, but are difficult to extract from the noise. In addition, the high selectivity is partly a disadvantage, as it is hard to build a multichannel system necessary to cover a wide range of target substances. Moreover, substances fully screened by metallic enclosures, etc. are difficult to detect. A workshop was held at St Petersburg in July 2008 in an attempt to solve these problems and make NQR the universal technique for the detection of bombs regardless of type. This book presents the essentials of the papers given there.

Book Synopsis Sixty Years Of Double Beta Decay: From Nuclear Physics To Beyond Standard Model by : Hans Volker Klapdor-kleingrothaus
Download or read book Sixty Years Of Double Beta Decay: From Nuclear Physics To Beyond Standard Model written by Hans Volker Klapdor-kleingrothaus and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 1313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix — together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. This invaluable book outlines the development of double beta research from its beginnings until its most recent achievements, and also presents the outlook for its highly exciting future.

Book Synopsis Measurement of the pep and CNO Solar Neutrino Interaction Rates in Borexino by : Stefano Davini
Download or read book Measurement of the pep and CNO Solar Neutrino Interaction Rates in Borexino written by Stefano Davini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solar neutrino experiments have proved to be sensitive tools to test both astrophysical and elementary particle physics models. Neutrinos coming from the Sun offer a window into the inner workings of our star. Both the first evidence and the first discoveries of neutrino oscillations have come from experiments which detected neutrinos from the Sun. The Borexino experiment at Laboratory Nazionali del Gran Sasso is designed to perform solar neutrino spectroscopy below 2 MeV. The key feature that allows Borexino to pursue this physics program is its ultra low background level. This thesis is devoted to the first direct measurement of the pep and CNO solar neutrino interaction rates in the Borexino experiment. The detection of the rare signals from pep and CNO solar neutrinos in Borexino requires novel analysis techniques, as the signal interaction rate in the active target is only a few counts per day, while the dominant background in the relevant energy region, the cosmogenic beta+ emitter carbon-11, produced in Borexino by cosmic muon interactions, is about 10 times higher.
Book Synopsis On the Direct Detection of 229m Th by : Lars Von der Wense
Download or read book On the Direct Detection of 229m Th written by Lars Von der Wense and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the first detection of a nuclear transition that had been sought for 40 years, and marks the essential first step toward developing nuclear clocks. Atomic clocks are currently the most reliable timekeepers. Still, they could potentially be outperformed by nuclear clocks, based on a nuclear transition instead of the atomic transitions employed to date. An elusive, extraordinary state in thorium-229 seems to be the only nuclear transition suitable for this purpose and feasible using currently available technology. Despite repeated efforts over the past 40 years, until recently we had not yet successfully detected the decay of this elusive state. Addressing this gap, the thesis lays the foundation for the development of a new, better frequency standard, which will likely have numerous applications in satellite navigation and rapid data transfer. Further, it makes it possible to improve the constraints for time variations of fundamental constants and opens up the field of nuclear coherent control.
