Book excerpt: Tests of the current understanding of physics at the highest energies achievable in man-made experiments are performed at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. In the theory of the strong force within the Standard Model of particle physics - Quantum ChromoDynamics or QCD - confined quarks and gluons from the proton-proton scattering manifest themselves as groups of collimated particles. These particles are clustered into physically measurable objects called hadronic jets. As jets are widely produced at hadron colliders, they are the key physics objects for an early "rediscovery of QCD". This thesis presents the first jet measurement from the ATLAS Collaboration at the LHC and confronts the experimental challenges of precision measurements. Inclusive jet cross section data are then used to improve the knowledge of the momentum distribution of quarks and gluons within the proton and of the magnitude of the strong force.

This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on preliminary measurements of the central, [eta][le] 0.5, inclusive jet and dijet cross sections at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV. Two data sets with integrated luminosities of 91 pb[sup[minus]1] and 14 pb[sup[minus]1] were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron p[ovr p] Collider with the D0 detector. The inclusive jet cross section measured with both data sets and reported as a function of transverse jet energy (35 GeV[le] E[sub T][le] 470 GeV) and the dijet cross section measured with the 91 pb[sup[minus]1] data set and reported as a function of dijet mass (200 GeV[le] M[sub JJ][le] 1 TeV) are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order QCD. 11 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: The Standard Model is the current theory used to describe the elementary particles and their fundamental interactions (except the gravity). My PhD within the ATLAS experiment put this model under test using objects called jets, to study final state particles that interact through the strong force. First, I contributed to a method of jet calibration aiming at calibrating the energy scale of jets in the forward region of the detector with respect to central region. I improved the calibration by making it faster and more precise. Next, I worked on a search analysis of new physics using events with two jets. The Standard Model predicts a smooth distribution of the invariant mass of di-jets, hence we search for a bump which could come from a new particle. Since no significant bump is found, we put limits on signals as predicted by Beyond Standard Model theories and on model-independent signals. Last, I developed a new physics analysis measuring the leading (highest in transverse momentum) jet differential cross-section as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The challenge was to factorize the detector effects (resolution and acceptance) from the observable, which I did using a new unfolding technique. I also worked on the theoretical predictions calculation which was very challenging to perform and needed the implementation of special regularizations. The measurement and the predictions are then compared and tensions are observed due to the difficulties of theoretical predictions calculation.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dijet production is measured in proton--proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. Double-differential dijet cross sections are presented as functions of the dijet mass and rapidity separation of the two highest-transverse-momentum jets in an event. The data sample collected in 2011 by the ATLAS detector is considered, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb -1. Jets are defined using the anti-kt algorithm, with two choices of the jet radius parameter, R = 0.4 and R = 0.6. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative calculations, as well as NLO Monte Carlo generator predictions. In both cases, electroweak effects are accounted for. A method for the quantitative comparison of theory predictions with data is presented, employing a frequentist technique. This allows for strong statements on which sets of parton distribution functions best describe the data. A theory of quark compositeness modeled by contact interactions is confronted by the unfolded data using the CLs technique, an example of the versatility of the measurement.

Download or read book Inclusive Jet Cross-sections and Dijet Azimuthal Decorrelations with written by Raimund Strohmer and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a preliminary measurement of the inclusive jet cross-sections based on an integrated luminosity of 378 pb{sup -1} acquired with the D0 detector between 2002 and 2004 at a center of mass energy of {radical}s = 1.96 TeV and a measurement of azimuthal dijet decorrelations based on an integrated luminosity of 150 pb{sup -1}. The cross section measurements are based on an iterative cone algorithm with a cone size of R = 0.7. They are performed in two rapidity bins between 0.0 and 0.8. The measurements are in good agreement with next to leading order calculations. The azimuthal angle between the two leading jets is sensitive to higher order QCD effects. The measurement of dijet azimuthal decorrelations therefore probes these effects without explicitly reconstructing more than two jets. Except for large azimuthal angles where soft effects are important the measurements are well described by the next to leading order perturbation theory.
Book Synopsis Measurement of the Ratio of Inclusive Jet Cross Sections Using the Anti-kt Algorithm with Radius Parameters R by :
Download or read book Measurement of the Ratio of Inclusive Jet Cross Sections Using the Anti-kt Algorithm with Radius Parameters R written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the inclusive jet cross section with the anti-kt clustering algorithm are presented for two radius parameters, R=0.5 and 0.7. They are based on data from LHC proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector in 2011. The ratio of these two measurements is obtained as a function of the rapidity and transverse momentum of the jets. Significant discrepancies are found comparing the data to leading-order simulations and to fixed-order calculations at next-to-leading order, corrected for nonperturbative effects, whereas simulations with next-to-leading-order matrix elements matched to parton showers describe the data best.

Download or read book Measurements of the W Production Cross Sections in Association with Jets with the ATLAS Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents cross sections for the production of a W boson in association with jets, measured in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the large hadron collider. With an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb-1, this data set allows for an exploration of a large kinematic range, including jet production up to a transverse momentum of 1TeV and multiplicities up to seven associated jets. The production cross sections for W bosons are measured in both the electron and muon decay channels. Differential cross sections for many observables are also presented including measurements of the jet observables such as the rapidities and the transverse momenta as well as measurements of event observables such as the scalar sums of the transverse momenta of the jets. As a result, the measurements are compared to numerous QCD predictions including next-to-leading-order perturbative calculations, resummation calculations and Monte Carlo generators.
