Book excerpt: I present preliminary results of the measurement of the hadronic mass spectrum and its first three spectral moments in inclusive charmless semileptonic B-meson decays. The truncated hadronic mass moments are used for the first determination of the b-quark mass and the nonperturbative parameters [mu][pi]2 and [rho]D3 in this B-meson decay channel. The study is based on 383 x 106 B$\bar{B}$ decays collected with the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e- storage rings, located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The first, second central, and third central hadronic mass moment with a cut on the hadronic mass mX2 6.4GeV2 and the lepton momentum p* 1 GeV are measured to be: M1 = (1.96 ± 0.34stat ± 0.53syst) GeV2; U2 = (1.92 ± 0.59stat ± 0.87syst) GeV4; and U3 = (1.79 ± 0.62stat ± 0.78syst) GeV6; with correlation coefficients [rho]12 = 0.99, [rho]23 = 0.94, and [rho]13 = 0.88, respectively. Using Heavy Quark Effective Theory-based predictions in the kinetic scheme we extract: mb = (4.60 ± 0.13stat ± 0.19syst ± 0.10theo GeV); [mu][pi]2 = (0.40 ± 0.14stat ± 0.20syst ± 0.04theo) GeV2; [rho]D3 = (0.10 ± 0.02stat ± 0.02syst ± 0.07theo) GeV3; at [mu] = 1 GeV, with correlation coefficients [rho]mb[mu][pi]2 = -0.99, [rho] [mu][pi]2[rho]D3 = 0.57, and [rho]mb[rho]D3 = -0.59. The results are in good agreement with earlier determinations in inclusive charmed semileptonic and radiative penguin B-meson decays and have a similar accuracy. Through the comparison of this result to those obtained in other channels, this provides a test of the Heavy Quark Effective Theory predictions that are used for the determination of.

Book excerpt: Knowing the mass of the b-quark is essential to the study of the structure and decays of B mesons as well as to future tests of the Higgs mechanism of mass generation. We present recent preliminary measurements of the b-quark mass and related nonperturbative parameters from moments of kinematic distributions in charmed and charmless semileptonic and radiative penguin B decays. Their determination from charmless semileptonic B decays is the first measurement in this mode. The data were collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy ee−-collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center at a center-of-momentum energy of 10:58 GeV.

Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Book excerpt: Using a sample of 383 million B{bar B} events collected by the BABAR experiment, they measure sums of seven exclusive final states B → X{sub d(s)}[gamma], where X{sub d}(X{sub s}) is a non-strange (strange) charmless hadronic system in the mass range 0.6-1.8 GeV/c2. After correcting for unmeasured decay modes in this mass range, they obtain a branching fraction for b → d[gamma] of (7.2 ± 2.7(stat.) ± 2.3(syst.)) x 10−6. Taking the ratio of X{sub d} to X{sub s} they find [Lambda](b → d[gamma])/[Lambda](b → s[gamma]) = 0.033 ± 0.013(stat.) ± 0.009(syst.), from which they determine.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report a preliminary measurement of the first and second moments of the hadronic mass distributions in B → X{sub c}l[nu] decays. The measurements are based on [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} events where the hadronic decay of one of the B mesons is fully reconstructed and a charged lepton from the decay of the other B meson is identified. The moments are presented for threshold lepton momenta ranging from 0.9 to 1.6 GeV. From the M{sub X}2 moments we determine the non-perturbative Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE) parameters, {bar {Lambda}} and [lambda]1. We combine the measured moments M{sub X}2 with earlier BABAR measurements of the semileptonic branching ratios and B lifetimes and perform a simultaneous fit to the HQE for the moments obtained for different threshold lepton momenta and the semileptonic decay width. This fit results in an improved value for the CKM matrix element.

Download or read book Preliminary Measurement of the First Hadronic Spectral Moment from Semileptonic B Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary determination of the first moment of the hadronic mass distributionM[sub X][sup 2] -[bar m][sub D][sup 2] in semileptonic B decays has been obtained as a function of the minimum lepton momentum, ranging from 0.9 to 1.6 GeV/c. The measurement is based on a new technique involving B[bar B] events in which one fully reconstructed B meson decays hadronically and the recoiling B decays semileptonically. The mass of the hadrons in the semileptonic decay is determined from a kinematic fit to the whole event. For different minimum lepton momenta, the mass distribution is decomposed into contributions from various charm resonant states and a non-resonant contribution, allowing for the determination of the first moment. From these moments the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) parameters[lambda][sub 1] and[bar[Lambda]] can be derived. For lepton momenta in the B rest frame above 1.5 GeV/c, we find a first moment that is compatible with existing measurements. However, if we extend the measurement to lower values of lepton momenta, the data can only be described by Operator Product Expansion calculations if we use significantly different values for[bar[Lambda]] and[lambda][sub 1] than obtained from earlier measurements based on lepton momentum spectra and the photon spectrum in b[yields] s[gamma] transitions.

Book excerpt: We determine the inclusive B [yields] X[sub c][ell][nu] branching fraction, [Beta][sub c[ell][nu]], the CKM matrix element V[sub cb], and other heavy-quark parameters from a simultaneous fit to moments of the hadronic-mass and lepton-energy distributions in semileptonic B-meson decays, measured as a function of the lower limit on the lepton energy, using data recorded with the BABAR detector. Using Heavy Quark Expansions (HQEs) to order 1/m[sub b][sup 3], we extract [Beta][sub ce[nu]] = (10.61 [+-] 0.16[sub exp] [+-] 0.06[sub HQE])% and V[sub cb] = (41.4 [+-] 0.4[sub exp] [+-] 0.4[sub HQE] [+-] 0.6[sub th]) x 10[sup -3]. The stated errors refer to the experimental, HQE, and additional theoretical uncertainties.

Book excerpt: Using about 23M B{bar B} events collected in 1999-2000 with the BABAR detector, they report on the decays B 2!D(*){bar D}(*)K and B° 2!D*D*−. The branching fractions of the low background decay modes B° 2!D*− D(*)°K are determined to be [Beta](B° 2!D*− D°K+) = (2.8 ± 0.7 ± 0.5) x 10−3 and [Beta](B° 2!D*−D*°K+) = (6.8 ± 1.7 ± 1.7) x 10−3, where the first error quoted is statistical and the second systematic. Observation of a significant number of candidates in the color-suppressed decay mode B+ 2!D*+D*− K+ is reported with a branching fraction [Beta](B+ 2!D*+D*− K+) = (3.4 ± 1.6 ± 0.9) x 10−3. Decays of the type B 2!D(*){bar D}(*) can be used to provide a measurement of the parameter sin2[beta] of the Unitarity Triangle. For this decay mode they measure a branching fraction of [Beta](B° 2!D*+D*−) = (8.0 ± 1.6 ± 1.2) x 10−4.
