These cross-sections are essential for determining the neutrino flux in measurements of neutrino cross-sections and oscillations. The E907 Main Injector Particle Production (MIPP) experiment at Fermilab is a fixed target experiment for measuring hadronic particle production using primary 120 GeV/c protons and secondary [pi], K, and p beams. The particle identification is made by dE/dx in a time projection chamber, and by time-of-flight, differential Cherenkov and ring imaging Cherenkov detectors, which together cover a wide range of momentum from 0.1 GeV/c up to 120 GeV/c. MIPP targets span the periodic table, from hydrogen to uranium, including beryllium and carbon. The MIPP has collected ≈ 0.26 x 106 events of 58 GeV/c secondary particles produced by protons from the main injector striking a carbon target.

From the 3({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}), 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}) and K{sup +}K{sup -} 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) mass spectra, the cross sections for the processes e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} 3({pi}{sup +}{sup -}), e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0}) and e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} K{sup +}K{sup -} 2({pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) are measured for center-of-mass energies from production threshold to 4.5 GeV. The uncertainty in the cross section measurement is typically 6-15%. We observe the J/{psi} in all these final states and measure the corresponding branching fractions.

The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective collision c.m. energy, and so BABAR ISR data can be compared to the relevant direct e+e− measurements. From obtained 4? mass spectrum we evaluate e+e− → ?+?−?+?− cross section for the range of c.m.s. energy from 0.6 to 4.5 GeV. The systematic error of the cross section measurement is 5% and comparable with the best e+e− data. The cross sections for identified 2K2? and 4K final states also have been presented.

Book excerpt: Electron Compton scattering is the best known fundamental QED process, however, a precision measurement of its cross section for a beam energy above 1 GeV has been lacking up to now. An updated high precision measurement of the neutral pion lifetime via the Primakoff effect (PrimEx-II) experiment was performed in Hall B of Jefferson Lab in 2010. The experiment used small angle coherent photoproduction of [Pi] 0 's in the Coulomb field of a nucleus, i.e. the Primakoff effect, to determine the lifetime with a precision of less than 1.5% . It therefore requires thorough understanding of the underlying systematic uncertainties. To facilitate that data for well known electromagnetic processes were taken concurrently with the photoproduction data. This analysis pertains to measuring the Compton scattering cross section, which occurs with similar kinematics to the primary process. The combination of the well established theory for this process with large collected statistics allowed to extract this cross section with high precision in an energy region of 4-5 GeV for 12C and 28Si targets. The results of this analysis will be presented.

Book excerpt: The coherent 3He(e, e[pi]+)3H reaction was measured at Q2 = 0.4 (GeV/c)2 and W = 1.6 GeV for two values of the virtual photon polarization, [epsilon], allowing the separation of longitudinal and transverse cross sections. The results from the coherent process on 3He were compared to H(e, e[pi]+)n data taken at the same kinematics. This marks the first direct comparison of these processes. At these kinematics (p[pi] = 1.1 GeV/c), pion rescattering from the spectator nucleons in the 3He(e, e[pi]+)3H process is expected to be small, simplifying the comparison to [pi]+ production from the free proton.

Two data sets with integrated luminosities of 91 pb[sup[minus]1] and 14 pb[sup[minus]1] were collected at the Fermilab Tevatron p[ovr p] Collider with the D0 detector. The inclusive jet cross section measured with both data sets and reported as a function of transverse jet energy (35 GeV[le] E[sub T][le] 470 GeV) and the dijet cross section measured with the 91 pb[sup[minus]1] data set and reported as a function of dijet mass (200 GeV[le] M[sub JJ][le] 1 TeV) are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order QCD. 11 refs., 5 figs.
