Book excerpt: Present techniques for measuring sound velocity in liquid metals have been limited by transducers that cannot survive in extreme temperatures for the long periods these techniques require. We are developing an alternative, noncontacting technique that takes very little time (approximately 1 .mu.s) and can be used at very high temperatures (above 6000 K). We hope to use this method with our isobaric-expansion apparatus, in which we measure the thermal expansion, enthalpy, and temperature of wire samples electrically heated under high-pressure argon gas. Because we can already determine the specific heat C/sub p/ and the bulk thermal-expansion coefficient .cap alpha. for liquid metals, sound-velocity measurement would allow us to determine the Gruneisen parameter .gamma./sub G/, specific heat C/sub v/, isothermal compressibility K/sub T/, entropy derivative (delta S/delta v)/sub T/, and internal-energy derivative (delta u/delta v)/sub T/. This paper describes this technique and the progress we have made with it to date.

Book excerpt: Present techniques for measuring sound velocity in liquid metals have been limited by transducers that cannot survive in extreme temperatures for the long periods these techniques require. The report describes work on a dynamic noncontacting method intended to measure sound velocity in liquid uranium. Measurements were successful with liquid lead, but not with liquid uranium. Flat slab specimens were found to give much better response than cylindrical shapes.

Book excerpt: Present techniques for measuring sound velocity in liquid metals have been limited by the use of transducers which cannot survive in extreme temperature conditions. These methods also require relatively long measurement times. An optical noncontacting method has been developed which may be used for extremely short experimental times and very high temperatures and pressures. This technique is being incorporated into an isobaric expansion apparatus in which a 1 mm diam wire sample in a high pressure argon gas environment is resistively heated to melt within a time period of only a few microseconds. Before instability of the liquid column occurs, thermal expansion, enthalpy, and temperature are measured. The addition of the sound velocity measurement permits a more complete determination of the thermophysical properties of the liquid metal.

Such measurements may be combined with other thermophysical properties measured with the isobaric expansion experiment (IEX) to yield several additional thermodynamic quantities. Results of calculations based on the sound speed measurements are presented, and their impact on liquid metal phenomenology is discussed.

Book excerpt: Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods, Volume IV, Part B: Applications to Quantum and Solid State Physics provides an introduction to the various applications of quantum mechanics to acoustics by describing several processes for which such considerations are essential. This book discusses the transmission of sound waves in molten metals. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the interactions that can happen between electrons and acoustic waves when magnetic fields are present. This text then describes acoustic and plasma waves in ionized gases wherein oscillations are subject to hydrodynamic as well as electromagnetic forces. Other chapters examine the resonances and relaxations that can take place in polymer systems. This book discusses as well the general theory of the interaction of a weak sinusoidal field with matter. The final chapter describes the sound velocities in the rocks composing the Earth. This book is a valuable resource for physicists and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1972 book brings together the results of a decade of research into the physics of liquid metals and alloys, a subject of growing interest to physicists, metallurgists and materials scientists at the time. It covers a wide range of phenomena, and for the benefit of newcomers to the field, Dr Faber provides a clear exposition of the physical properties involved, and the relevant theoretical arguments are developed in sufficient detail for an experimentalist who carries rather little in the way of mathematical equipment to follow them. Experienced researchers will appreciate Dr Faber's critical approach and the many previously unpublished results which he has included. The mass of experimental data which he has brought together and the comprehensive bibliography will make the book of great use to readers of both classes.

Book excerpt: Experimental Thermodynamics, Volume II: Experimental Thermodynamics of Non-reacting Fluids focuses on experimental methods and procedures in the study of thermophysical properties of fluids. The selection first offers information on methods used in measuring thermodynamic properties and tests, including physical quantities and symbols for physical quantities, thermodynamic definitions, and definition of activities and related quantities. The text also describes reference materials for thermometric fixed points, temperature measurement under pressures, and pressure measurements. The publication takes a look at absolute measurement of volume and equation of state of gases at high temperatures and low or moderate temperatures. Discussions focus on volumes of cubes of fused silica, density of water, and methods of measuring pressure. The text also examines the compression of liquids and thermodynamic properties and velocity of sound, including thermodynamics of volume changes, weight methods, and adiabatic compression. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the thermophysical properties of fluids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 considers the essential conditions for a model to be truly predictive. The authors use a statistical approach to rate the validity of the various predictive models that have been previously used for evaluating various thermophysical properties. On the basis of this assessment, the authors have predicted values for the thermophysical properties of elemental metallic liquids, which are lacking in experimental data. They believe their predicted values are at least as reliable, and sometimes more reliable than corresponding experimental values. According to the periodic law, the authors provide the periodic variations in values of some twelve physical quantities or thermophysical properties. This is based on the electron configuration in the outermost energy level of metallic elements. Finally, a large number of experimental data for the physical quantities and thermophysical properties of liquid metallic elements are compiled.
