Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Expansion of Gases: Memoirs by Gay-Lussac, Joule and Thomson The experiments on the changes of temperature which gases experience when they are allowed to expand under such conditions as to do no external work are of great importance from two standpoints: 1.Owing to the minuteness of the change of temperature, it may be assumed that the intrinsic energy of a gas is almost entirely kinetic; and so conclusions may be drawn between the mechanical work done in compressing a gas and the rise of temperature produced; 2.Measurements of the minute changes lead to a method of comparing temperatures as registered on a gas- thermometer and those which are given on Thomson's Absolute Scale. Robert Mayer assumed that there was no "internal work" done in compressing a gas, and so made a calculation for what is now called the mechanical equivalent of heat. The question as to whether Mayer was acquainted with the experiments of Gay-Lussac at the time he made his calculation or not has long been an open one; but it is generally acknowledged now that he was familiar with the results obtained by Gay-Lussac. and so was justified in his theoretical work. Gay-Lussac performed his experiments on the free expansion of gases in the year 1807;and a translation of his memoir is given in this volume. In 1844 Joule repeated these experiments, being unacquainted with the work of Gay-Lussac. His published account of his research follows. The important bearing of Joule's experiment upon the science of Thermodynamics was recognized by William Thomson (now Lord Kelvin): and he began, in collaboration with Joule, a more complete investigation of the "Thermal Effects of Fluids in Motion," which lasted for many years. The theory of the phenomenon and the errors involved are discussed. It appears that. Even for mixed gases, the volumes diffusing (if not the masses) are fully determinable. The accuracy essentially depends on the measure ment of absolute temperature and of barometric pressure and should there fore be of an order below I 27 30 per C. Or per centimeter of mercury. As the masses of gas contained are as a rule much less than 10 - 2 gram, even in case of air, the weight less than gram is determinable, showing the remarkable sensitiveness of the method. The Consultants' Meeting in that year at Harwell on Rare Gas Behaviour in Metals and Ionic Solids was followed in 1982 by the Jiilich Inter national Symposium on Fundamental Aspects of Helium in Metals. Two smaller meetings have followed-a CECAM organised workshop on Helium Bubbles in Metals was held at Orsay, France in 1986 while in February 1989, a Topical Symposium on Noble Gases in Metals was held in Las Vegas as part of the large TMS/AIME Spring Meeting. As is well known, the dominating feature of inert gas atoms in most solids is their high heat of solution, leading in most situations to an essentially zero solubility and gas-atom precipita tion. In organising the workshop, one particular aim was to target the researchers in the field of inert-gas/solid interactions from three different areas--namely metals, tritides and nuclear fuels-in order to encourage and foster the cross-fertilisation of approaches and ideas. In these three material classes, the behaviour of inert gases in metals has probably been most studied, partly from technological considerations-the effects of helium production via (n, a) reac tions during neutron irradiation are of importance, particularly in a fusion reactor environ ment-and partly from a more fundamental viewpoint.

Suppose a bubble of gas to be surrounded by water in some small cavity in the soil, the circumstances being that the quantity of water is so large that it is free to enter or leave the cavity. Under such circumstances the tension of the wat er gas surface would tend to increase the pressure on the gas beyond that generally existing in the soil and which is approximately that of the atmosphere. This subject has not I think been referred to by others when discussing the physical properties of soils, and although no direct experimental data can be offered here, the matter is deserving of consideration, because quite small spheres would be exposed to considerable excess of pressure, and the corresponding decreased volume would be included in the difference between the volume of gas esti mated and found, and would not be differentiated from gas condensed on the surface of soil particles in the foregoing method of measurement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamical Theory of Gases My primary aim in the first edition of this book was to develop the Theory of Gases upon as exact a mathematical basis as possible. This aim has not been forgotten in the preparation of a second edition, but has been combined with an attempt to make as much of the book as possible intelligible to the non-mathematical reader. I have adopted the plan, partially followed in the first edition, of dividing the book to a large extent into mathematical and physical chapters. The reader whose interest is mainly on the physical side will, it is hoped, get an intelligible account of the present state of the subject by reading the physical chapters I, VI, VII and XI to XVIII, and regarding the more mathematical chapters simply as material for references. Apart from this, something is, I think gained by clearing the ground by a full mathematical treatment before any physical discussion is attempted. Since the first edition of this book appeared the position of the Kinetic Theory has been to some extent revolutionised by the growth and developments of the Quantum Theory, and it has been by no means easy to decide what exact amount of prominence ought to be given to the Quantum Theory in the arrangement of the book. The plan finally adopted has been to confine the Quantum Theory to the last chapter; the difficulties arising out of the classical treatment have been allowed to emerge in the earlier chapters, but have been left unsolved. The last chapter merely indicates how these difficulties disappear in the light of the new conception of the Quantum Theory: no attempt is made to give a full or balanced view of the whole theory. In the present status of the Quantum Theory this seemed to me the best procedure, but I anticipate that if the book is fortunate enough to run to a further edition, the Quantum Theory is likely to figure much more prominently there than in the present edition.
