Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Free Expansion of Gases: Memoirs by Gay-Lussac, Joule and Thomson The experiments on the changes of temperature which gases experience when they are allowed to expand under such conditions as to do no external work are of great importance from two standpoints: 1.Owing to the minuteness of the change of temperature, it may be assumed that the intrinsic energy of a gas is almost entirely kinetic; and so conclusions may be drawn between the mechanical work done in compressing a gas and the rise of temperature produced; 2.Measurements of the minute changes lead to a method of comparing temperatures as registered on a gas- thermometer and those which are given on Thomson's Absolute Scale. Robert Mayer assumed that there was no "internal work" done in compressing a gas, and so made a calculation for what is now called the mechanical equivalent of heat. The question as to whether Mayer was acquainted with the experiments of Gay-Lussac at the time he made his calculation or not has long been an open one; but it is generally acknowledged now that he was familiar with the results obtained by Gay-Lussac. and so was justified in his theoretical work. Gay-Lussac performed his experiments on the free expansion of gases in the year 1807;and a translation of his memoir is given in this volume. In 1844 Joule repeated these experiments, being unacquainted with the work of Gay-Lussac. His published account of his research follows. The important bearing of Joule's experiment upon the science of Thermodynamics was recognized by William Thomson (now Lord Kelvin): and he began, in collaboration with Joule, a more complete investigation of the "Thermal Effects of Fluids in Motion," which lasted for many years. As the masses of gas contained are as a rule much less than 10 - 2 gram, even in case of air, the weight less than gram is determinable, showing the remarkable sensitiveness of the method. In organising the workshop, one particular aim was to target the researchers in the field of inert-gas/solid interactions from three different areas--namely metals, tritides and nuclear fuels-in order to encourage and foster the cross-fertilisation of approaches and ideas. This aim has not been forgotten in the preparation of a second edition, but has been combined with an attempt to make as much of the book as possible intelligible to the non-mathematical reader. I have adopted the plan, partially followed in the first edition, of dividing the book to a large extent into mathematical and physical chapters. The reader whose interest is mainly on the physical side will, it is hoped, get an intelligible account of the present state of the subject by reading the physical chapters I, VI, VII and XI to XVIII, and regarding the more mathematical chapters simply as material for references. Apart from this, something is, I think gained by clearing the ground by a full mathematical treatment before any physical discussion is attempted. Since the first edition of this book appeared the position of the Kinetic Theory has been to some extent revolutionised by the growth and developments of the Quantum Theory, and it has been by no means easy to decide what exact amount of prominence ought to be given to the Quantum Theory in the arrangement of the book. The plan finally adopted has been to confine the Quantum Theory to the last chapter; the difficulties arising out of the classical treatment have been allowed to emerge in the earlier chapters, but have been left unsolved. The last chapter merely indicates how these difficulties disappear in the light of the new conception of the Quantum Theory: no attempt is made to give a full or balanced view of the whole theory.
