Book excerpt: Two years ago at the 10th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics, we reported preliminary results from our measurements of photons in reactions of 200·A GeV 32S ions with Au nuclei. The results had been presented earlier at Quark Matter '93. For central collisions we reported a small, but statistically significant, excess of photons over those that can be accounted for by the two-photon decay branches of neutral pions and eta mesons and by the small photon contributions from other radiative decays. This paper is, in a sense, a sequel to the 1994 presentation. Here we present the final WA80 single 'direct' photon results, and we discuss their implications for various theoretical calculations. 13 refs., 2 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Direct thermal photons in the p{sub T} range of 0--5 GeV/c are expected to provide a sensitive probe of the early conditions of the Quark Gluon Plasma which may be formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The production of single photons in 200 A GeV S + Au reactions has been investigated using the 3,800 element Pbglass calorimeter of CERN experiment WA80. Neutral?° and? cross sections have been measured via their two-photon decay branch yields. The measured?° and? cross sections have been used to calculate the expected inclusive yield of decay photons. Excess photon yield, beyond that attributed to radiative decays and background sources, may be associated with thermal photon emission. Excess, d̀̀irect ̀̀photon yields have been extracted from high-statistics S + Au photon data for different event centrality classes. A slight excess photon yield above that which may be accounted for by hadronic decays was observed for central events.

Book excerpt: Direct photons are ideal tools to investigate kinematical and thermodynamical conditions of heavy ion collisions since they are emitted from all stages of the collision and once produced they leave the interaction region without further modification by the medium. The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured direct photon production in p+p and Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV over a wide transverse momentum (p{sub T}) range. The p+p measurements allow a fundamental test of QCD, and serve as a baseline when we try to disentangle more complex mechanisms producing high p{sub T} direct photons in Au+Au. As for thermal photons in Au+Au we overcome the difficulties due to the large background from hadronic decays by measuring 'almost real' virtual photons which appear as low invariant mass ee− pairs: a significant excess of direct photons is measured above the above next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. Additional insights on the origin of direct photons can be gained with the study of the azimuthal anisotropy which benefits from the increased statistics and reaction plane resolution achieved in RHIC Year-7 data.
